    When I weld studs, I usually spray some soapy water onto the welding spot. This way I get a very clean weld without any slag sticking on the sheet.

    Slip a bit of tubing (plastic, aluminum, whatever...) over the stud and there wouldn't be a need to tack weld the nuuhh... ummm... hexagonal fasteners. Adds a bit of stability and cleans up the looks as well.

    Hey there, I just stumbled across your channel at the end of last week and am loving all the videos so far (I’m currently working my way from oldest to newest ). I’m not a metal worker at all, but your videos and manner have filled me with the confidence and kick up the a**e I needed to take the plunge and take some welding lessons from a local guy to me here in the UK.
    Being a stay at home dad to my little boy, this could be the ideal time to learn to weld and then spend my evenings practising, then when he gets to school age maybe I’d be decent enough to start trying to make signs and other small projects like fire pits and the like. Fingers crossed, it could be a great way to make some cash part time around my little one as he gets older.
    Also, I’ve subbed to you on Patreon too. Only at the lowest level i’m afraid at the moment as money is pretty tight for us right now. (Especially if I “need” to buy a welder soon to practise!)
    Thanks for all the great content and regular uploads too! :o)

    Use the stainless steel studs. Outdoors, the mild steel studs will eventually rust and will stain your signs. I use an old AGM JS-1 CD stud welder I nabbed for $1k on ebay, and it works great.
    For laying out the holes, get a roll of kraft paper or piece of flat corrugate, layout your studded letters before you paint them stud-side-down, and then spray some spray paint over the studs. Then the paper will be a template for drilling your holes in the base sheet.

    I would have taken a short length of copper tubing or even steel pipe that was slightly larger than the stud and used it is a spacer and secured it with the nut from the back side then you wouldn't see any threaded stud and the letters would still be removable.

    • @42Fab
      @42Fab  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      we've done similar before, the time to make a lot of spacers all the same length wasn't worth it to me.

    How does your cutter compare to the hyperthem 45xp? If you had to buy the stud welder, could you justify the ~$3K price tag?

    • @42Fab
      @42Fab  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 875 SC is a 45 amp machine, but with, as far as I am aware and in my experience, a Higher duty cycle that the 45xp. Consumables are cheaper, but it lacks as refined of a fine cutting setup as the hypertherm.
      The stud welder? Absolutely, there are now models that run less though if you're only needing up to 1/4" studs, as I do.
