    I'm a little disappointed that you chose to keep HUNDREDS, bro..I live in Florida and as our habitats continue to shrink and decline from "human activity" I'd hope that nature lovers would be more sensitive about taking animals from the wild..like take a couple dozen and experiment with breeding- not a couple hundred..saying "we'll see how many survive, etc" and basically taking them JUST to make money is NOT cool at all..

      just came across this video from 2yrs ago, and you're correct, taking hundreds is immoral! you may have decimated the population for awhile. I hope most people that take some only take a few, imagine if 20 ppl went there and took hundreds! what a shame, and that's why the Buffalo almost went bye bye!

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s the plan. I need to start earnestly trying to breed them come the new year and might have to lower the priority of my CPD spawning and raise these up. My other friends that I shared these with already have spawned them with just pairs so I feel like I’m lagging and need to step it up lol. Going to try some new spawning containers in January. Plus I have the rainbow shiners now that I want to spawn. Too many fish and not enough tank space.

      That is one of my goals for this year is to start spawning these and to try and breed a lot of them. They also might be very close to you if you are close to rainbow shiners. Not crazy close but not like thousands of miles far away.

    I was at that exact spot on Thanksgiving (a few days ago, surprisingly no one else was there) and caught 3 along with a ton of sailfin mollys and some bluefin killis (I think I got the names right). Can’t wait to go back to visit. I grew up there but moved away. Next time I will have correct nets as the ones my dad had had too large of holes. I am now addicted to these little bright blue fish!!!

      I’m glad you were able to enjoy the springs as they are an awesome little place. Growing up there you didn’t even know the gold mine you were right next to.
      If you are looking for a good dipnet to collect fish with I’d recommend getting a net from Jonah’s aquariums as those are really good dip nets and easy to travel with and collapsable. Another one would be from Pentair and their handler monorail net. That is the net that I am using and the only downside is that the metal pole isn’t collapsible but is much cheaper.
      If you are looking for ways to ID fish that you caught there are a couple of good resources I’d point you to. First, would the NANFA facebook page that welcomes new people asking what they caught and you can confirm what you have. If you want to start learning how to ID lots of native North American fish the Peterson field guide of North American fishes is a great book to ID freshwater fishes.
      Hopefully you appreciated that information because when I was getting started out it was difficult to know which way was up when it came to catching and IDing natives and took a while to find the different things.

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was right in between the Kayak launch and the boat launch near the mouth of the spring.
      You and I have the same plan. I was to breed them and raise awareness about the beauty of fish that we have here in the US that is so often overlooked and under appreciated by the part of society that should love them the most. Heck Europeans aquarists appreciate our native fish more than we do.

    They’re beautiful fish! And the water looks so clear… is this spot any good for snorkeling? I need to plan to drive down there (about 8-9h drive). Is there anything I need to be aware of before collecting, such as permits? What dip net you recommend?

    • @cpht-vfdmed
      @cpht-vfdmed ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a really nice blue hole to dive but I wouldn't snorkel down the river. Too many kids showboating on their boats/jet skis & gators. The swimming area by the docks is awesome & my kids love it. I got these fish, ramshorn snails, live plants, etc.

      The place I went to would be an easy to access location and not super far. I actually met a couple people who drove from Jacksonville to get to that spot.
      You can look up their distribution on fishmap and find them there. I personally went there to avoid any confusion with the okeefenoki species. Most drainages along the panhandle of FL should have them.
