    Nothing wrong with her , just carbon burning off.
    First time they run without an exhaust I have seen that before a few times , but i would definitely adjust the values.

    Gonna stick with the majority, it's just carbon burning off. A good cleaning, or a dose of berrymans or seafoam would do wonders.

    Love those vanguard motors. Have the 16hp in my 1990 simplicity zero turn. It is very much worth your time and money if you choose to rebuild. People will pay a lot of money for one of those in good working condition. Just give her a bath, change the oil and filter, make sure the carb is in good shape, and seafoam the hell out of it and sell it. Hell if you are in NC I would consider purchasing myself for a go-kart.

    The small tube in the exhaust are exhaust port liners. They there to help with exhaust heat so the engine doesn't over heat.

  • @donf3739
    @donf3739 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'd pay well over $40 for it. Three things I would do before mounting it on a machine, after cleaning it up, are pull off the crankcase cover, and replace that gasket, and while you're in that area, replace the dipstick tube seal and the PTO seal. Those gaskets are notorious for being flimsy and failing because the bolts eventually work their way loose. There is a gasket kit that comes with a beefier gasket and new bolts, with a little thread lock on them. The dipstick tube seal will also wear out and leak. Great engine, in my opinion, just a couple of design flaws that have been made correctable.

    Exhaust port sleeve was used on older models to protect the port. Newer models have better alloys so collar is no longer needed.

  • @PullerbearEd
    @PullerbearEd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    My guess would be it's carbon burning off the inside of the head, watch that cylinder and you can see orange flames. The piece you took out of the one exhaust port is a restricter to get the correct back pressure. They use that so they don't have to have equal length exhaust pipes and the muffler can be closer to the block.

    • @redneckcomputergeek
      @redneckcomputergeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That fully explains the exhaust piece and why i had never seen one before. Thank you Ed!

    • @chris2790
      @chris2790 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't think that is correct. Newer vanguards don't use them. BS Vanguard tech told me it had to do with high heat. New alloys are better.

    Clogged air filter caused rich running and carbon buildup. The thing you pulled out was a bushing for a muffler pipe. Change the oil, put some pipes or a muffler on it and run it and set the idle mix. After it gets limbered up check the valves. Dandy engine right there. GBWYou!

  • @MechanicDawson06

    We have had quite a few times in our shop where we'll get one in like this and we clean the heads and block cause of excessive carbon build up, The way the sparks fly and how weak they are says a lot about it just carbon just burning off. You scored big on that I only dream of that deal. lol

  • @restorethis5750

    i seen that screwdriver sitting there while you were reving it up, luckily the motor didnt slide and the flywheel caught the screwdriver. i didn’t actually see anyone else mention that, coulda been baddd real quick lol. but cool video though.

  • @liamfleming8179

    I think that the sparks are just carbon burning of because it was sitting I had a mower that was strait piped and the engine sat for a year and it would do that for a little bit then it stopped.

  • @robertriggle2127

    Like Starpuss says looks like carbon burning off. Plug was really Carbon all up like it had been primarily idling long periods. Try putting exhaust on it and maybe a load and see if it clears up.

  • @johnhicks9529
    @johnhicks9529 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Without it hooked back up inside it can cause constant flooding.& Sparkplug fouling continusly due to that reason alone. It wouldn't be inside of the carburetor if it didn't need it at all. It's for controlling the automatic choke machanisum inside. Witch works off vacuum controlled pressure feed through the fuel pump unit.

  • @johnhicks9529
    @johnhicks9529 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That rod you cut needs to be revoked back up to inside.after reattaching the mufflers back on to that engine to. It runs off vacuum controller feed to pulsate fuel from the pump into the float blow from the fuel tank.& Fuel line filter to to help with keeping out dirt.&'debris from entering the carburetor to witch is the main purpose of inline fuel filters to begin with.

  • @donaldshimkus539
    @donaldshimkus539 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's just burning off some carbon deposits. Back in the old days on a car engine we would dribble about a quart of water down the carb while holding the throttle at about 3000 rpm. That would cause all the carbon to blast right off the cylinder heads.

    "Diaphragm Fuel Pumps" are relatively inexpensive, but this engine definitely needs a Valve Adjustment since we have no Maintenance History on this.
    Oil Flush would be a good idea!
    To "FLUSH" ADD 2-3oz of Berrymans or SEAFOAM into the Crankcase and run for about 3 minutes and drain the oil.
    This will help dissolve most of the "SLUDGE" and help clean the Internals...
    But being RCG, you already know this!
    Thanks for sharing this Vanguard,
    -T🖖

    I've been wondering if the vertical shaft version can easily (or even) be converted to horizontal? Any ideas? I've so not reviewed the parts and haven't found a horizontal shaft 18HP version to compare. No videos online either. Are for L-heads conversions to horizontal from vertical... though not for OHV Briggs that I've seen. Both mine came from White GT185's. Great detail as well and nice to see a Vanguard V-Twin 18HP video... both mine were reported as working so I haven't bothered working on yet and am about to take the one I transplanted into the JD240 (homebrew Ford320 in progress) out and replace with a single cylinder OHV Briggs (wanting to have all mine single cyl OHV or opposed twin Briggs). Valve lash... though I've not worked on the V-Twin's much? Totally neat seeing you working on and I'm also curious if the valves maybe neat cleaning or really just what does it look like under the cover and inside deeper? Thanks for sharing er!

    • @redneckcomputergeek
      @redneckcomputergeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To my knowledge only the 18hp kohler oppy twin was ever made factory convertible. Even then it was know in the vertical shaft configuration to have oiling problems. There have been many arguments over the years on if a pressure lube briggs could be converted by tapping into the pressure side and feeding it to the valves. But to my knowledge is has never been pulled off.

  • @mikedennis8

    I have a 18hp vanguard vertical shaft that needs a crank seal cause it leaks oil from there. How hard are they to replace?

    • @redneckcomputergeek
      @redneckcomputergeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have never done one on these but on all the others I have done it is not hard. Just be sure it is in fully square or it will blow again very quick.

    What is the "HP Rating" on the KOHLER V-Twin you just revived?
    I don't think you stated that within the Video.
    Any plans on Fabricating/Starting John's Bulldozer/Tank Build?
    You don't need TRACKS Yet!
    I'd say Kohler or Briggs Horizontal Shaft V-Twin Engine and use the Hydraulic Drive from the Zero-Turn for the drive...

    Not only holding on to thing of gas by the exhaust then you putting the open gas next to the starter with all the sparks are you trying to start your hand on fire then then your reaction dropped the container of gas it gos all over then you have gas all over in your shop on fire way your trying to put the fire out on you hand your O 💩 so may I ask not do that in your shop it be much better lot longer gas line an put a gas can way from your work please. I use a small boat gas tank when I start up engines and a bottle of gas that don't leak an with smaller hole. Both said are sparking but that one next to you is sparking more
