The scene was in the book too, although there were slight differences. Veruca and Violet leave as described with the former covered in garbage and the latter restored to her original shape with her skin permanently blue; Augustus leaves with the pipe having made him skinny (and his clothes now loose and baggy), and Mike is now stretched to noodly proportions and 10ft tall (and prescribed a special vitamin Wonka created to help fill him out later on).
Reminds of the scene in Season 2 where Keeley goes to Higgins for advice and after running through the same list he responds “just glad to be on the list”

I used to do that when I spilled some monster on my tie at work and everyone acted like it was the weirdest thing ever and just feel vindication knowing Higgins has the same dumb things pop in his brain as me

Higgins has to be one of the best tertiary characters in the history of television.
Their journey as friends & colleagues is yet ANOTHER example of this series' commitment to amazing, heartfelt, character driven storytelling.
The Tim Burton version added the scene of the kids leaving for a reason 😂

They're alive in the book, but in the Gene Wilder version... yeah, they are dead.

Just saw the new Wonka trailer, and just had to make a return journey to the best line on Willy Wonka ever delivered.
His best scene of the series by far.
