It’s really nice to see another Contest being worked on. I’m currently bringing my uncles 1970 Contest 33 back from the south of France via the canals to end up on the Deben. Although smaller, so many features are the same. It’s funny that we have matching dark patches where the dodgy gas heaters lived! I’m looking forward to seeing your plans for her. Beautiful yachts that sail well and really pass the test of time.
It’s is (was) a lot of work but trust me (I’ve done it twice before) : emptying your boat and getting rit of all he stuff which is too old of useless in any other way is extreme rewarding and conditional to proceed. Job well done and good luck !!! Harry
A head or toilet has a drain and ventilation tube.. when you remove all water from the bowl then the air is allowed to move freely from the holding tank, the bowl of the head and the inlet for the sea water. This is why it stinks. You need to make sure that the hose coming from the black water tank has a rag in it and tank empty
Fantastic episode, Ben dismantling the toilet and the holding tank shows in detail this unpleasant job, prior to the refit. Both the cinematography, sound and editing is truly marvelous. We thank you both for sharing this odorous job.
Hey guys, new subscriber here... looking forward to following along. Top tip... if you haven't already, get yourself an rechargeable drill and impact driver set. It will make removing and replacing all those screws a breeze... DeWalt make pretty good ones that are always on offer somewhere... Have fun!
Thank you! We actually have an extensive tool kit but we use it for work and couldn't keep bringing it back and forth. Can happily say that the boat is now littered with Makita blue!
Came across your channel earlier today, watched your previous episodes and have liked what I saw. Subscribed and looking forward to following your refit journey, and in time your sailing life.
Why would you throw away the factory sink?? You can use it for a mold to build a new one from fiberglass or all wood.. it's a really cool design because it keeps it out of the way when not in use
on the previous boat name, IIRC (and please don't hate me if i'm wrong cause it's been a decade since I had latin at school xP) a saeculum is more like an 'era' and I think it is often defined as being a 'lifetime' kinda like 'the era of a specific person'. so instead of being ironic (if my recollection of my highschool latin is correct-ish) it could actually be very fitting to rename it. After all, the era of the previous owner has ended for the boat, and it's now your 'era' of having the boat :) anyways, good luck on your adventure, I'd love to become a fulltime cruiser too but I'll need to learn to sail myself/by myself first. So I'm now almost religiously watching cruiser channels to pick up any little thing I can, guess i'll be following up on you guys as well :p
Put back that holding tank immediately. Of all the things that make your boat socially acceptable and compliant to international regulations it’s a functioning holding tank. Good luck with the update to your boat but remember that you will want to sell it one day, so don’t change it too much.
@@sailingrumpunch so strange. Even when the tank was new I don’t think the light would have been enough to shine through the tank. Maybe the previous owner could never find their torch so they wired up the light to look through the access hatch! Lol
I love content like this and am glad I stumbled across the channel while it is just starting up. Looking forward to seeing where your journey takes you!
On such a small vessel why two heads, transform one into a shower only. It will change your life. If you have the money...ditch the gas heater and replace with a heat pump. Here in NA every sail boat is ditching gas in favor of batteries and solar. Much safer.
Great stuff!! I believe that you can figure this all out because you appear to be on the right track. Would you introduce yourselves and tell us more about your boat? You remind me of Teulu! Love from the Maine coast.
Thank you! All about perseverance right?! If you fancy watching our Ep 0, we introduce ourselves properly and tell you a bit more about our backgrounds and how/why we’re doing this! More to come with the boat itself of course :) thanks so much for your comment 🙂
Bravo on the new channel! This will be loads of fun to follow along. One production note: Please put some effort into your audio levels. Music is much louder than voiceover and talking heads shots vary considerably in volume. I found myself turning it up to hear the comments then being blasted and having to turn down again. Normal growing pains with editing. :-)
Thanks so much! I promise you a lot of effort has gone in - we are thoroughly working on the audio for every episode and are finding are feet as we go, so it will (hopefully) only get better from here! 🤞 with the music and voiceover, thank you for the note on this - will make sure this carries throughout our following eps! Really appreciate the notes!
Good to get rid of the horrible heads and plumbing. Personally we are great fans of composting toilets, so easy to use and maintain. No holes in the boat. Plus they work in boatyards.
We’ve stayed in many off grid places with composting toilets and think they’re fantastic. After much back and forth we have decided to replace the sea toilet, we’ll have to put up with the long trip down the ladder for now!
@@sailingrumpunch hope you got a longer ladder! Welsh winter gales in the Menai Straits are not very nice for nocturnal loo trips - it's an age thing 🤣
like your channel - would be good to get some background to the start of the story - what made you go here, where and how (and how much) did getting the boat involve?
Not just yet no! It’s definitely something we’d like to look into a bit later down the line when we know we can make more content. For now we only have buymeacoffee :)
We’ll be posting every two weeks on Thursdays, so Episode 3 will be out next Thursday! At the moment we have to start slower as we sadly don’t have the capacity to do weeklies but we’re aiming to get there!
It's not a hot water heater, it's just a plain old water heater. Hot water wouldn't need to be heated. It's okay, I think more than half of people call them hot water heaters. Google hot water heater and what comes up are water heaters:)

They are very similar! We’ve seen a few 33s around, such nice boats! Hopefully see you on the water one day.
The second most obvious thing to tell you about boats is that it is a lot easier to take things apart than put them together.
Sorry mate it is just the OPPOSITE!
I removed my saloon table last week and found i had a massive stauner underneath it a total nightmare.of a job after that!!!
Oh no!! Hope you got through it!

Thank you 🙂 It's refreshing to hear!
That’s an Ellie job 😂😂
Sure would have been nice to see more of Ellie with her charming accent
Nice progress!

Any boat job always takes at least 3 times as long as expected! Another good episode 😊
Ain’t that the truth! Thanks so much 🙂
You are very brave to tackle that beast! well done.
Thank you 🙂

Well done Ben. "Saecula" is so beautiful 😍
Thank you 🙂
What a super episode you have made excellent progress 😊
nice new channel. cant wait for more.
Hi there! Thanks so much, we can’t wait to share it all
Excited to see the journey! Keep the videos going it’s great to see a UK boat channel!
Thank you 🙂

You fancied a crack at the old sailing TH-cam life eh? Good luck my friends. Its a tough gig! I will follow with great interest!
Thought we’d give it a go!😅
While you have it apart I would definitely paint all bilge areas and compartments white
It's on the list!
Nice to see a new sailing channel. Good luck with the refit
Thank you 🙂

how do find these young girls that get in and mix it with the tools and the dirty work

We have said goodbye to that holding tank but we will be replacing it!🙂
Another great video guy. Poor Ben doing the toilet!! Did you ever figure out what the light on top of the holding tank was for? So weird!!!
Thank you! Still have no idea what that was for!

Great work today your smashing it🥳
Another great video. Keep up the great works.
Love your show guys, keep them rolling in
Thank you 🙂
Clean & paint the entire bilge in white, the only way to easily find future water leaks!
We've already bought the Danboline!

We do only have one heads and a small one at that! I think we will be losing the gas in favour of electric!

Did she feel different after you took off her old name? Off camera do you talk about her in her new name? and does she suit her new name yet?
We love her new name and and she suits it perfectly! We were never connected to the old name at all
I made a post and it’s disappeared. I have some stuff you can use if you care to get back to me
Hi! That sounds great, thank you. If you would like to email us at sailingrumpunch@gmail.com we can chat through that. All the best.
