I got a second hand 5040 to replace my dad's shockingly bad office PC. Upgraded it with an i5 processor, 16GB of RAM, and fitted it with a 1TB M.2 SSD. It's a great and inexpensive PC.
Nice. I bet he loves it. Happy Father’s Day!
Price?
Great job. You can't go wrong with a dell.
Are you able to use WiFi on your 5040? I'm struggling.
I have a 990 from 2011 and it runs Windows 11 faster than many new computers if not most.
Great now that's going to shoot up in price
If it makes an even newer Optiplex cheaper too I’ll take it 💰

I believe the reason why the older ones are being shown is that there had been an abundance of them due to companies selling their old hardware to liquidators when they upgrade, then those liquidators selling them on after wiping the internal storage.
The newer ones are starting to appear as companies sell those off. It depends on their accounting periods and such that would determine when they'd buy new tech.
I agree
The main downside of the new one is the combined mic.headphone jack, and who knows what ports they removed in the back on the new one
@@Warp3326 Probably the VGAs
One of the best places to pick stuff up like this at is a surplus depot your local university or government agency might have. They typically don't have any storage included but they're always relatively new machines (like the one on the left in the video) and you don't have to pay shipping or tax on them.
I buy old business machines (largely SFF optiplexes) and sell parts from them. The older ones like the 9020 are honestly built so much better than the newer ones. I guess for performance it doesn’t matter, but for every day use, I still prefer the old ones.
Yeah, I agree that generation was very solidly built
Thankfully someone who looks for preformance and sees which is better! No hate for everyone but i prefer old one!!
I agree completely and series 4 is standard ATX, the dead giveaway that the series 5 is cheaply built is that they have laptop DVD drives even on the full size towers.
Hey Ive started a business building custom gaming PCs and flipping them. I’ll sometimes use optiplexes and case swap them. Was wondering if maybe we could make some good deals if you still use the OptiPlex
Nice niche in the market. Hope its going well
Good thing I found my Dell Optiplex 790 MT for free all because some office failed
Where?
I got my 990 SFF for free in 2019, it was my mom’s old office pc.

I just got an Optiplex 3050 with a 7th gen core i5 for $110. Came with a decent mouse and keyboard as well. I could've gotten one of these SFF PCs for cheaper, but I settled on a minitower, since it uses a standard ATX motherboard, has more room for a GPU, and uses standard ATX power supplies.
Where did u get together with mouse and keyboard
@@DREEB14 I found it on Walmart's online marketplace. Some used computer shop had a bunch of Optiplexes for sale. As long as you don't need a high end gaming setup, you can get a decent PC for very cheap.
Never owned a prebuilt desktop PC and never will.
Fall last year I picked up locally a used 8th gen i7-8700 & Asus ROG Strix Z390-E motherboard for $50 dollars total. Then during the time finding a GPU was like a needle in a haystack. Bought locally a used EVGA GTX 1080 SC 8GB for $50 dollars.
At the time I bought the hardware the CPU was going for around $225 dollars used. While the GPU in question was going for around $300 dollars on the used market. Got a sweet deal on the hardware.

Better yet, buy an HP ProDesk or EliteDesk. The MT versions around Skylake and Kabylake use standard power supplies so you can swap them and put a relatively power hungry GPU in them
I'm using a hp 405 g4 sff. Came with a ryzen 5 2400g and 16gb of ram. Cost me £90 last year. Just bought the sapphire low profile rx 6400 and that's perfect. Wouldn't use anything hotter or weaker in this build.
@@kennwan9917 the SFF version is gonna be hotter of course, that’s why I said to get the MT variant
@@PieStudios I agreed with what you said, for me personally the rx6400 is always perfect for these builds(just letting people know) Especially since they require no psu pin and such low power. I'm still using my stock HP psu.
What model of Elitedesk though ?
@@kobejanvicente1686 Essentially you don't want to look at small form factor builds as it limits your capacity for gpu upgrades but it isn't always the case. The PSU power has the biggest impact but you should research that for whatever specific model you find a good deal on. Also please note a lot of these motherboards awkwardly have their x16 slots for the GPU right at the bottom often leaving little to no room for anything larger than a single slot GPU. Again, not always the case but for whatever model you find a good deal on, again research those specs specifically or look to see if someone has made a video :)
I use it for hosting my game server and website
Figured I'd mention that they can't be overclocked BUT...if you go into bios by holding down the F2 key, you can find an option called intel turbo boost. It works with the cpu and the gpu. Sometimes if you are planning on using another gpu, you have to turn off secure boot and turn on legacy csm. Then make sure that gpu is selected in bios.
Thanks!
I had an optiplex as my first "gaming" pc. Put a 1050ti in it. Did me well. Upgraded now but that optiplex is still running my zwift setup and doing household server duties. Brilliant little things.
I knew this beforehand, and it will arrive soon.
I was about to get a newer gen optiplex, then found a 7010 i5 3570 with an RX550 already installed for €120. Another €50 on 500G ssd + 16G RAM. Just finished RDR2, totally smooth and 47fps average even in towns with a graphics on low with medium details.
Slap a 4k Gamer Pro on it. All you need is minimum 900p to play in actual true 4k. 4k Gamer Pro is an upscaler but I call it a GPU on a stick. Really, true 4k.
Meanwhile, the Skylake 7050 micros are selling for less than $100.

I’ve had a blast with my DELL OptiPlex 9020.

I totally found a 5040 on a curb during bulky trash pick-up(one of a couple of machines i found that week) a few months back, no damage inside or out a basically brand new machine that had even been upgraded with more ram and a larger hd than original specs.
And it runs great! I now use it almost daily.

For anyone looking to turn one of these into a TrueNAS box, the LGA1151 socket in the 3040, 5040, and 7040 can support some xeon processors which support ecc-memory. But what a lot of people don't know is that the i3 and i9 that fit the socket also supports ecc-memory while the i5 and i7 does not. It's not SUPER important to have ecc-memory but it's good practice.
Just got an OptiPlex 7060 for $94 after shipping and taxes as an upgrade from my i5 2400 system. I am definitely liking it so far. The ones with 8th gen chips cost a bit more, but I wanted to go ahead and future proof myself before everyone is scramming to buy something newer because of the nonsensical Windows 11 requirements, plus I wanted 6 cores to make it more of an upgrade. I originally thought I ordered an SFF model, but It is actually a mini tower, which for my case I can't really complain. Now to just wait for the rest of the parts to arrive.
Thats a great deal, I agree, if you want to be futureproof its worth going for the 8th gen, Windows 10 is only scheduled to get security updates until late 2025 so you wont be completely safe using it afterwards. Better to get something ready for the long haul.

We run mostly Optiplex PCs at work and the 3*** and 5*** series ones seem to have the most trouble. I don't know if the 7*** and 9*** have better motherboards, better power supplies, or what but they definitely last better.
7010 and 9010 have been my favorites
3020 = 4th Gen Intel Core CPUs, 5040 is 6th gen, 5th gen was pretty much non existing on desktop segment, so in reality 1 generation newer CPU
Don't use an RX 6400 with these older optiplex! As it would seem the most viable card (being single slot low profile) the x4 bandwidth will be SEVERELY bottlenecked in these older pcie 3.0 systems. Look for single slow GTX 1650 (rare but exists like the one from Yeston) you can even get away with a dual slot in some systems, id also recommend the RTX A2000 if you can find a good deal.
Great add - thank you. Yes, dual-width cards like an RTX a2000 would plug into the 4x slot on the Optiplex 5040 shown, but would still outperform the single-width RX 6400, plugged into 16x. There are definitely some good deals to be found on the a2000.
I got my 790 WAYYYY before this craze, in like 2017. It operated an industrial wood saw for a good 7 years and was sealed inside a plexiglass case to prevent it from accumulating sawdust.
Also got free (stolen by my dad) Lenovo mice from the same place for years because the dust from the saws would gunk up and kill them within just a couple months, so their solution was to keep pallets upon pallets of them in their warehouse lol
Wow that’s crazy lol
I was doing some research and i found that the dell optiplex 7050 is great. You can put in a gtx 1050 or 1650, and you can also put in 64 gigs of ddr4 ram and it also has a I5 or I7 7500 cpu.And you can also play some a lot of games on it and i will buy it for around 115 euros 95 for the optiplex and 20 for 256 gig ssd and i will also put in a 4tb hdd but its hard to get 64 gigabytes of ddr4 ram so i will get around 16 gigs of ram and you can also get a m.2 ssd
Just got a 7040 SFF on ebay with dual graphics cards (Radeon R5 340 and Radeon R7 200), i5 6500, 32GB Ram and a 500GB SSD. Was going to pay a little more for an i7 but the stuff that already came with this I couldnt pass up. $106 total after shipping and tax only $81 for the PC
I think the reason people are buying the older models are because they standard 24 pin
If I buy this can I plug it into my monitor and will my monitor work with just that? No laptop plug in, just the dell? Please see this I need help. I want a monitor but I don’t have a device to plug it into so that it can display. I want it to be my main computer. Is there anyway I can do that?
Yes assuming the optiplex is stock and isn’t missing anything it will work. You can also upgrade it later on depending on current specs. If you plan on upgrading it the psu should be the first thing you upgrade. Then get a gpu and an ssd and then eventually also better ram as they usually only have 8gb. Hope this helped

Yea only a single-width low profile card (like the RX 6400) would fit in the 16x slot by the power supply. Have you tried plugging your GTX 1050 into the 4x slot? It would probably be about a 7-9% performance hit, but being a dual-width card, the 1050 would make up for that performance hit vs any single-width card.

I have a 5040 ssf with 32 GB of DDR3 Ram and i5-6600, what’s the best gpu for it? I also have a spare 240W PSU too
Dualpapayas is right for cost/benefit. FYI to max it out with the 240W PSU if you don’t care about price: upgrade to i7 6700 CPU and go with 12GB RTX a2000: amzn.to/3O7Aeb8 . That GPU will be extreme overkill (tiny bit better than the 6GB variant and way more expensive) and be limited about 7-9% by using the 4x PCIe slot, but it’ll squeeze out the max performance you can get in games right now with the 5040 SFF.
The older optiplexs are compatible with standard power supplies and cases, so for modding they're better. If you're not planning on modding get the newer one
They have adapters so you can use a aftermarket psu
Where do you find the power adapters for the psu?
Hello, I'm considering upgrading my Dell Optiplex 7010 DT, and my budget is only $180.
PC Specs:
CPU: i5 - 3470
GPU: None
RAM: 8GB 1333 MHz
Storage: 500 HDD
PSU: 250W
I was thinking of buying the SAPPHIRE PULSE Radeon RX 550 4G OC, but I'm not sure if it will fit into the OptiPlex 7010 DT, and I also don't know if the PSU (250W) would be okay for it. I'm also considering upgrading the RAM from 8GB to 16GB, but an SSD (instead of upgrading RAM) would be useful too; that HDD is really slow. (Also, take into account that I intend to use the PC primarily for older games (and some CS). Perhaps some newer games, but not ones that are too demanding.)
What do you think I should do?
Based on the budget and what how you’ll use it, I would start with an SSD and an RX 6400 lp. That particular 6400 below is currently out of stock but usually cheapest when in stock.
SSD: amzn.to/3LiY83Q
RX 6400: amzn.to/3KnEVf7

Yeah, there’d be no need to use a laptop drive on that.

Why are you showing small form factor machines? these aren’t recommended for gaming upgrades because the small size limits upgradeability and airflow.
It’s what the people want. The focus of my first video (of this kind) was which brand of low profile 1050 ti would fit in a SFF 7020 and which wouldn’t. Something about the smaller cases is more enticing I guess. It’s fun to see what they can do, even if it’s less than something with more room.

Interesting and annoying to know. Three of my Linux rigs are built on 9010 and 7020 tower chassis. I still have a spare 9010 mbo I'd like to build up and retire some core-2 boxes I have on my net. How to do this cheaply though? That's the ugly question.
🤔
Guys look at the HP Elitedesk 800 G3, has an i7 7700
Don't buy these things. With some effort you can find them for free most of the time. Schools and businesses throw the old ones out constantly.
That’s right. You might be able to find a bunch getting replaced all at once and get one for free. That’s exactly what we’re trying to do with this channel - keep those PCs out of landfills.
Well y’all there are a LOT of Optiplex’s out there with similar processors, I’m sure they won’t be ridiculous for too long!
what GPU would work on an Optiplex 390 SFF
It should work with a double width card like the 1050 ti, gtx 1650, or a2000. Just make sure you measure the length of the space available and get one that’s not too long.
I have an optiplex 7050 is it better?
I have tons of both of these at work
Awesome! Are they planning on upgrading anytime soon? If so, see if they’ll let you take them vs throwing away.
@@OptiGPU They keep running some of those computers until they fail or until they got new ones (which is actually normally every 5 years or so… but sometimes they keep them longer in use or but then to side)
I already took some of theme - but at some point I don’t have the space anymore 😅
Starfield made this route obsolete, but even so, a Dell Precision is a much better starting platform
How about 5050 optilex bro?
Yeah, that would be somewhat similar to the 5040, just a little over a year newer.
Mike Hell, I knew you
It doesnt have a mic jack! Now i bought it and it sucks!
Question: if i am trying to buy a dell optiplex 7040 with a psu of 180 watt, can i put a low profile gtx 1650 gigabyte that consumes 75 watt and requires a minimum of 180 watt?
Assuming a 65 watt cpu plus 75 watt gpu, you may want to look for a 240watt Dell power supply with the right connectors and form factor for your system. 180 is cutting it close in my opinion.
