I went for a ride yesterday in the morning and I passed a guy on a dual hub fat tire mountain bike. We were going uphill and he looked as though he was riding up it without using the motors. I started talking to my camera/audience about how it defeats the purpose to have all that power and not use it. Also I mentioned the fact that ebikes are supposed to be fun etc. A few minutes later he comes flying past me at 30mph plus while pedaling slowly. I'm assuming it has a cadence sensor. My point is that this new law is so dumb when there's obvious ways around it. It just seems like it's going to be a huge waste of tax payer dollars, creating, implementing and trying to enforce it. I'm hoping that it becomes a large enough drain economically that they either rework it or scrap it entirely.

Everything is unlockable, they are just covering their behinds; I’m sure anybody who spends 15 minutes looking into it will figure out how to unlock it. I can see manufacturers doing this for the California market, but I’m positive you can easily get into the advanced settings of the controller and unrestrict it. The manufacturer just gets some cover that they didn’t help you do it. I doubt they’d dispute the warranty over that, that really would be the end of their company.

Unfortunately, the success and proliferation of alternative, sustainable means of transportation was never going to last. Anything that hurts the pockets of big auto and big oil is bound to get hamstrung by overly restrictive, nonsensical laws and regulations, pushed solely to discourage the layperson from ever considering not spending 50,000 on a 4-ton truck just so they can get to work. It's a shame, but owning a car is basically legally required in most of the US, and the powers that be are going to fight tooth and nail to keep it that way :/ RIP ebikes, you were nice while you lasted.

I own a Super73 Mojave (2022), love it and have never had it off the 20 MPH limits. I've always considered it a bike, as in no registration, insurance or license required to ride it but have the privilege of a motor to help enjoy the ride. I live in a state that has not implemented CA laws but I'm sure it's a real possibility. I'm fine with the Class 2 limits in CA now and how Super73 has addresses them. I'm sure it will affect some sales in CA but for the long term it will be fine and there is nothing to stop Super73 from making a monster ebike for off roads as long as it is sold that way with no power range modification ability. It's a relatively new tech and some of the products have pushed the limits like the Sur-Ron's I see with 12 and 13 year olds riding in public parks and streets. Like drones and the FAA's regulatory response, that basically have nearly destroyed the RC airplane hobby (which I left because of it), I was afraid these electric motorcycles and high powered ebikes, that TH-camrs flaunt, with 1500+ watt dual motors, 45+ Mph etc., would ultimately kill the ebike as we know it. I'm glad that it is still alive and kicking (in CA) and was easily adapted by Super73 to fit the regs IMO. Thanks for the video and chance to comment on it. Stay safe.

Super73 has carved out a market segment that's more art than performance. If you look at their lineup, its more about paint jobs and appearance than speed. They are the Apple of e-bikes. Given how easy it is to modify bikes, I wouldn't be surprised if they have to sell them with a simple wire that needs to be cut to unlock full speed. Or simply change the page to indicate some models as being race or closed course only, like some motorcycles and cars. It's dumb that we have a speed limit on ebikes, while cars can be sold at 200mph and/or 0/60 in 2 seconds.

The Mars 2.0 came with an available app but I refused to let any eBike company control my eBike. If eBikes were allowed to max out at 35mph, then there is no reason to have a speedometer not required for Class 1 & 2 & I'm not sure why CA wants a speedometer on a Class 3 ebike.

  • @alanb76

The California regs and the pre-existing Federal ebike regs have always said that class III (20-28 mph) requires pedal sensing. Read the regulations carefully, nowhere do they say you cannot have a throttle, even in class III. So if you want to operate between 20 and 28 mph you need to move the pedals to enable the motor power. You can still have an operational throttle, but it cannot provide assist power above 20 mph unless the pedals are moving. Some controllers can be programmed that way, or a pedaling sensor and speed sensor added to control the throttle range. I've seen people pedal backwards which also triggers some pedal sensors. Properly set up pedal motion enables the throttle in the above 20 range and then the throttle can control the power to the motor as it always does.
The cost of an ebike is more about the quality of the components and the features, and that includes things like extended battery range. The cost is not only about speed. Another expensive feature is light weight, or ability to carry heavy loads or fold to a small size. Many ways to increase value and cost. Ride safe!!

Seems all e-bike laws that are being copied from one country to other don't follow any already established laws and practices about other types of vehicle and it's quite curious why is so.
If you observe e-bike laws not one part of them is concerned with safety of cyclist which are the most vulnerable on the roads and numerous deaths are reported each year of cyclist being hit by cars. In my country roads are not marked for cyclist and I hear all time about casualties of cyclists. And that bugs me that laws about e-bikes show zero concern about cyclist when they mandate certain features and particularly limits on electrical bicycles. I will try to list my points but list seem could go on and on and I am perplexed why no one discuss about them.
      Famous throttle
First ridiculous portion of such laws I have heard is regard of “throttle” as prohibited on certan class of e-bike.
This is such a bizarre component of law that doesnt occur in any similar law , like someone insisted on it without any proper motives he just hates people using hands.
It's scientific fact that is not possible to operate electrical (or any) motor without a throttle or speed control so what the heck law tries to do that no other similar law tries?
Seems lawmaker was concerned that cyclists don't have legs out of function so many such laws require you to pedal to throttle the motor? Is that really wisely?
This is not just ridiculous but dangerous in certain conditions. Go ask people who have e-bike how safe they feel when they reach limit of 20mph and in such speed need to start pedaling to get extra 8 mph speed they need to maneuver traffic. Easy to lose control I would say particularly when you are in wrong gear and get a spin out and instead of using your precise hands to fine tune speed and watch traffic you are busy where did your legs go off pedals.
      Speed limit can kill you
Number of deaths of cyclist in trafic show that neither Class 1 and 2 (and even 3) are fit to participate in modern public traffic as cars and other vehicles are at pleasure to ignore slower cyclist as they move much faster.
I experienced this few days ago when guy with truck completely ignored me as cyclist cut me off and forced me to either be smashed between cars or hit parked car. Thank God I had hydraulic brakes otherwise who knows what could have happened. How many such close calls happen each day to a cyclist?
If I had stronger motor and faster speed which I could have my e-bike by law instead betrayed me cutting me off in power. Is that really good to happen?
Imagine you drive a car something happens on road and you press gas pedal in hope to fast maneuver but there is no gas? You press and nothing happens. Would you find that a dangerous feature conceived to kill you? You could in lot of unexpected situations. And this laws instead of mandating speed limits on bike paths they created all this mess of classifications which has no base in anything alike or a reason.
Think about it! If bike path forbid certan class of bike that means under no condition person may drive e-bike just because its capable of higher speed while that ebike could just respect the speed limit on bike path.
Just tell me did you ever see a sign on street that says “ No Ferrari allowed” just because it can go so fast? So silly look as well such laws which I deem dangerous on many levels now. Because they force people to drive on roads where is higher chance for them to be hit. So nether they can drive with traffic on sections with speed limit of 35mph nor they can drive on bike path. Is it that a failure of the law?
My point is why not just put speed limit on bike path and get over with classes. I mean lot of people commute and need to pass multiple stages of roads and bike paths. Do I need to beat this horse any more or is dead?
I think 28mph is not sufficient for street bike. Needs to be faster perhaps 35mph(25mph, 35mph are ordinary street speeds in the US) on normal roads so you don't upset people in cars but you can get out of their way. I just wonder from where they came with figure of 28mph for Class 3 as it seems arbitrary and not done by real research.
      Motor power
This is a part of e-bike laws that drives me nuts. Some countries limiting power even to 250W. Really, so your hand drill can have more power then an ebike?
But then why would be there limit on power and what is problem with having few KW motors?
How dubious are this laws shows the science behind it. Motors are rated for power nominally to voltage and real power is manifested on drive train which can be adjusted by gearing either electronically or mechanically.
We are literary speaking of Arhimedes law of lever. But in our case we can convert speed into power.
      Archimedes' Law of the Lever
L A W . O F . T H E . L E V E R The Law of the Lever According to Archimedes . . . Magnitudes are in equilibrium at distances reciprocally proportional to their weights. This is the statement of the Law of the Lever that Archimedes gives in Propositions 6 and 7 of Book I of his work entitled On the Equilibrium of Planes. While it is commonly stated that Archimedes proves this law in these two propositions, there has been considerable debate as to what Archimedes really proved, what his stated postulates mean, what hidden assumptions he used, and what he may have thought he proved. A discussion of these points can be found in pages 291-304 of the following book: A RCHIMEDES by E.J. Dijksterhuis (translated by C. Dikshoorn) Princeton University Press , Princeton, N.J., U.S.A., 1987 The Law of the Lever Before Archimedes . . . W hy is it that small forces can move great weights by means of a lever, as was said at the beginning of the treatise, seeing that one naturally adds the weight of the lever? For surely the smaller weight is easier to move, and it is smaller without the lever. Is the lever the reason, being equivalent to a beam with a cord attached below, and divided into two equal parts? For the fulcrum acts as the attached cord : for both these remain stationary, and act as a centre. For since under the impulse of the same weight the greater radius from the centre moves the more rapidly, and there are three elements in the lever, the fulcrum, that is the cord or centre, and the two weights, the one which causes the movement, and the one that is moved : now the ratio of the weight moved to the weight moving it is the inverse ratio of the distances from the centre. Now the greater the distance from the fulcrum, the more easily it will move. The reason has been given before that the point further from the centre describes the greater circle, so that by the use of the same force, when the motive force is farther from the lever, it will cause a greater movement. Let AB be the bar, G be the weight, and D the moving force, E the fulcrum ; and let H be the point to which the moving force travels and K the point to which G the weight moved travels. The above passage is from the Mechanica , a work believed to have been written by the Peripatetic School , which is the name given to the followers of Aristotle . It was probably written in the years between the death of Aristotle in 322 BC and the birth of Archimedes c. 287 BC . The “kinetic” argument for the Law of the Lever given in the passage comes close to the idea of energy as the product of force and distance, to the concept of the conservation of energy, and to the principle of virtual velocities. As such, it is a more seminal argument than Archimedes’ “static” one, which does not provide much insight as to why the
      math.nyu.edu/Archimedes/Lever/LeverLaw.html
And for this reason any talk about motor power/speed in the law becames irrelevant (or dangerous) like it is irelevant in cars, boat or other vehicles of transportation that has marked as capable of much greater speeds achiving then it is legal on any road. Because road says what is legal speed.
It's being ignored fact that lower power of motor lack torque on lower speed which if we look at design of other vehicles each power ratings and motors having many hundreds of thousands of Watts at disposal greatly exceeding what is needed to move vehicles. And that when we speak about e-bikes laws really strain it. And for that reason when e-cyclist use car lane to change roads it becames dangerous and block whole traffic because from 0-20mph takes a long time to speed up because motor is weak. So what most chose is go to pedestrian zebra press light change to pass the street like a pedestrian. I actually feel bad for all cars waiting me alone which otherwise could be a flow.
My point is that weak motor may be dangerous as well by not providing confidence in acceleration. And there is a reason to have stronger motor for low speed torque and not for top speed which again can be and is limited by speed controller. So what is the point of limiting it that low?

    • @alanb76
      @alanb76 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@darkobul1 You raise a number of excellent points. The history of the current regulations comes from a collaboration of ebike manufacturers and ageing bicycle hobbyists. It does not come from the transportation sector, but from the bicycle enthusiast side, and from manufacturers who want simple laws to manufacture to. They are fixated on making ebikes be an extension of a pedal bicycle rather than a viable ultra efficient low impact transportation tool. The 28 mph likely comes from staying under the common moped speed limit of 30. Keeping speeds low goes back to avoiding licensing and insurance.
Mopeds originally required no vehicle license and no insurance however they did require a drivers license and were limited to 49cc and 30 mph. They were anemic when climbing hills and had weak brakes, probably to avoid surprising unskilled riders with strong braking that itself can cause accidents. Eventually injuries, and liability caused, at least in some states, the vehicle licensing and insurance to be added. The license is a one time so not annual, and the insurance came after I stopped riding mopeds so I don't know the cost of that. But with the 30 mph speed limit the amount of damage is limited, however it is still quite possible to cause severe injuries (or worse) to someone, even with a pedal bike, so that is perhaps the largest liability.
Perhaps they should add a class IV commuter's ebike that is allowed 35 or so mph and no power limit. Require a drivers or perhaps motorcycle license, etc. It is of course possible to get an electric motorcycle but that is in a different class (hundreds of pounds instead of 100 or so, 80+ mph top speed) and not really suited very well for the around town commuter - try taking that in the elevator and to your office. Another approach is to get an electric moped, but for best performance remove the power limit which is 1500 watts for e mopeds as I recall. If one must have a power limit allow what it takes to power the vehicle, rider and cargo up a 10% grade at reasonable speed like 30-35 mph rather than fixing a value. Different drivetrain designs require differing amounts of torque and power so make the overall performance the regulated value rather than one component in the system.
The commuter ebike I built back in the day before all these current regulations came along needed to have range of 15+ miles in steep terrain and power to climb the hills that I encountered on my commute. 35 mph would have been nice, but even 28 would have been ok as long as it could do that up a steep hill. At the time back then ebikes were limited to 1000W and 20 mph. With full suspension, moped tires and rims (to avoid frequent flats), and plenty of batteries for range as well as some cargo capacity for carrying a few things to/from work, this ebike was about 120 pounds. It did a great job right up to the point that I retired so now it doesn't get the use it once did. I could have used a lot more than 1000W for those hills. It had great brakes for the occasional emergency stop as well as regen for the downhills which is wonderful for keeping the brakes cool.
      Ride safe.

The is a prime example of how nobody is going to afford any bike because of this new law. 5 grand is a used car.😅 Money doesn't grow on trees. Just keep it in yr budget limit. Ppl are just buying for the looks and performance, nothing more and all of tht is going out the window. Mine costs $900 bucks and I'm happy with that.😊 Happy riding fam.

I sat under the basket for nba basketball games for 30 years, with a lot a nasty stuff getting on my tv camera lens. Please clean your lens before you ride, you go to all that effort to make your videos, take that last step. One of the most important things a cameraman does. Your Len is your viewers window and no one likes looking out a dirty window.

electric powered bikes that are capable of the same or similar speeds as gas motor powered bikes should require riders to follow the same laws. 12yr olds do not need to be riding at 35mph with throttle acceleration and have no training education or insurance.

If one wants speed, buy an electric motorcycle.
If the super73 can go 20 mph up a steep hill carrying 200+ lbs, being regulated to 20 mph doesn't matter.
Issue I'm having with most ebike reviewers is that they assume people are wanting a motorcycle without needing a license.
    And that might be right.

If this is a California law, why is everyone else being punished? I live in SC, so I can't enjoy a super73 unlocked because of California? These laws will stop nothing! If anything, you're going to have more ppl buying more powerful upgrade motor kits that go way faster than what the manufacturer off road speeds are. I already put a 3000 watt kit on my Ariel Rider X Class. I've got a 60v 3000 watt Freego X2, and I'm going to put a 3000 watt kit on my Revv1 FS. So what exactly are these laws stopping? All my bike's are fast, but I ride responsibly, and have never had a bad experience with a cop in 4yrs of riding. All that will happen now is companies will unclassify their bikes like Segway is doing with the Xyber bike. Every CES video of that bike, the Segway spokesperson says it is a non classified electric vehicle. What happened to personal responsibility? The damn car lobbyist are working overtime I guess.

As we all know,e-bikes often share pathways and other infrastructure with pedestrians, strollers, wheelchairs, shopping carts, and so on. Any bike traveling more than 20 mph in such an environment would pose a serious threat to public safety. Scooters and similar vehicles are available for riders that want to travel faster than 20 mph. Have a Tero Turbo 3.0 specialized e-bike and love it. It’s plenty perky as a class 1 machine. Had it up to 22 mph the other day. That’s more than enough speed for me. Have a Specialized dealer in my town that does a great job with customer service. If people live way out in the countryside with a low population density then, technically, a super fast e-bike should be allowed. Traveling 50 mph with no license or registration or insurance would be a disaster waiting to happen. Stay safe out there folks.

I’m not raining on anyone’s parade, mod bikes, go fast, have fun. But the legal standard at 20mph seems reasonable to me. Europe would beg for Class2 legality 😂
This twat repeating “why would anyone buy a 20mph S73 for $5k is true at 20mph or 28mph!!! They’re overpriced by a long shot. And they’re crappy bicycles. The geometry sucks. Get a zooz!!! (Not the flex)
