  • Mountain Man Journals, Glen Trayer and his son Austin from Mountain Boy
    Journals took the time to show you how to build a swallow box here in
    the wilderness. This is a perfect example of a wood working homeschool
    project.

    I so glad to hear Tanner is doing well. I like to make bird houses and feeders with scrap pieces of wood. I've never made a swallow box but I probably should. We've had swallows making nests in the newspaper slots under everyone's mail boxes on our block. They are great mosquito eaters for sure!

    Purple Martins don’t fight too much, but they are terrible about trying to claim two holes per pair.

    2 and 1/4 too big for swallows. It allows predators like house sparrows and european starlings access.

    I think you need to have some distance between the boxes, to avoid the fighting.

    The holes look a little to big brother . Hopefully you don’t have Sterling’s and European House Sparrow . Purple Martins are also swallows .

    You’re building a purple martin box. Swallows eat mosquitoes. Purple martins eat lots of insects, but not mosquitoes. You should change your title to “Building a purple martin box.”
