    On my antique violin it's very soft and unresponsive. Whereas the doms and visions are a dream on my violin.

    I'm about to graduate to Alpahyue [Go, AU!! heh].. Excellent review. After listening closely to all the strings at the end of your video.. IMHO, I feel the Alphayue's are the winner! Thank yue !!

      @@Fiddlershop I really enjoy your playing! I can sense real passion as you play. Music played without passion isn't music in my book! That Tchaikovsky concerto is one of my favorites. Two of my other favorites are Bruch's Scottish Fantasy, and Vieutemps' Concerto #5..

    I have alphayue on my $ 100 violin and they improve the sound, and it's nice. Only the E string is too bright, not very warm, and sometimes a bit annoying, because it is not a synthetic core.

    • @Fiddlershop
      @Fiddlershop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome. Yeah it's very common to use a separate E string like Westminster or Lenzner when the E from a set is a bust.

    • @emjeezmusic7603
      @emjeezmusic7603 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually all synthetic core string sets are always have steel E... Some have aluminum wound majority tin- plated .

    These are what my Pecard has and came with. I'm new so don't know but the e string is so damn hi pitch and loud. The string on this set is the only steel core. The rest are synthetic.

    Mairead Nesbitt loves these (because they have no settling in time) and talked me into getting a set of them. I did because they’re budget-friendly. I have yet to try them, though.

    My daughter has a temporary rental that came with these. We both kind of hate them. Thinking we will switch back to the Dominants she's loved so long as soon as we have an excuse to change the strings.

    • @Fiddlershop
      @Fiddlershop  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds like a plan! Every instrument is different, so if the Dominants sound better on her instrument, that's the way to go.

    • @JL14858
      @JL14858 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I went from dominant to alphayue and they sounded very metalic, I didn't like them. Only kept them on for a few days. Not sure if they just needed more time to settle in?

  • @duhiao1

    How do you think the “easyness” to play for different brands? I tried Thomastik spirit for cello. I am a beginner and somehow this brand feels so much easier to press firmly for the right tone than another brand

    • @Fiddlershop
      @Fiddlershop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question, and strangely enough, I think the ease of playability really has more to do with the soundpost and bridge placement/height. Sometimes instruments just feel like they're fighting back, or other times like I have to drag the string to get a sound. If I hand it to the luthier for some adjustments, it can many times feel like a completely different instrument with just a quick change.
      But, I do really love Thomastik, and Pirastro in general (nothing against Larsen or D'Addario, I just don't play them quite as often)

      ooh, I'll add it to the list, but it'll probably be a while since they're not that popular (at least at our shop). But I am curious about them as well...mostly do they sound good playing anything other than the Monti Czardas?!?!?!?

  • @ThomasTVP

    They sound thinner than Dominants. Really not the place to economize if you can get a better string (Yitzhak Perlman and Hilary Hahn play Dominants, and they could easily afford US$100 and above sets!!) for just 25 bucks more, why settle for these? At least these sound better than D'Addario's Ascenté strings in the same price range, which are truly awful.
    In your comparison, the Helicores sound the best by a wide margin, but then they cost as much as Dominants.
