    One of my favorite Cobra action figures and characters as a kid. Now that I'm collecting vintage GI Joe's again as an adult he still is one of my all time favorite figures and I use to display him in the very focus of my show case because he looks so impressive on his Air Chariot throne.

    I loved Serpentor when I was a kid and he is still among my favs in my collection. I always thought Cobra Commander was a whimp Serpentor was awsome and in my little Joe world onlybone person could stand up to him. For as long as I can remember mine had a chipped fang, I always imagined that was from when Sgt. Slaighter punched him in the face.

    One aspect of serpentor I really liked was Dick Gautier who did a damn good job of voicing the tyrant himself.
    And trying to voice a charismatic tyrant doesn't seem like an easy task.

    I honestly don't mind aspects of science fiction bleeding into G.I. Joe. Power suits, advanced weaponry & vehicles, and genetically-enhanced characters I'm cool with, because it kinda makes sense for warring factions to enhance their efforts through any means, particularly in an ongoing struggle.

    As much as I love the commander, serpentor was my pride and joy as a 6-7 year old.
    Arise serpentor, arise! Was watched as much as the movie on my VHS :)
    The air chariot was so iconic to me too. Now we have drones... Im waiting for one to be made human sized... But obviously... No capes!

    I was indifferent to this guy as a kid and i remember getting like three of him by accident (gifts from different people). I really loved cobra la, which is kinda weird, but i absolutely loved battle armor Cobra Commander.
    I have to say as an adult i’m really impressed with this figure. May have to track one down now.

    The problem with the concept of Serpentor is, what kind of battlefield strategy could he have come up with that General Hawk would not have learned about in military history in West Point?

    • @leadbones

      Also that it's impossible. I tend to turn off my critical brain when watching cartoons. Kinda ruins it when you start applying real world logic.

    I was 13 years old when Serpentor was released and my first thought was, “That’s really stupid.” It was definitely the beginning of the decline of my interest in GI Joe; but when I saw the Cobra-La 3-pack in a Kaybee Toys store my reaction was, “That’s it. I’m out.” I wouldn’t get back into GI Joe until the 25th anniversary collection.

    I could deal with Serpentor and even Cobra-La (I liked the characters but thought the name was stupid), but I wasn't willing to go ant farther even though I love sci-fi. When they came out with the Monstro Viper and Lobotomaxx and the space aliens, I was done. I never would've stuck around if GI Joe was too real world, but in the end they just went a bit too sci-fi for the line.

    As a G.I. Joe fan, I still laugh at the fact that in the Image comic books, Serpentor came back to life for a short time. Ironically, he lost control of Cobra yet again in a civil war. Cobra Commander managed to defeat him at the end of the arc. Supposedly the character of General Philip Rey introduced towards the end of the Image series is a clone of Serpentor, but this was never officially confirmed.
    It also surprises me that despite him not being as popular as Cobra Commander or Zartan, Hasbro has reissued him a few times.

  • @see5782000

    With the theory and science behind cloning technology, the idea of Serpentor may not be too farfetched except for his experience of those leaders long since dead. Very good review.

    if they made him look like he first did in the comics, bare chested with the cowled head, pants and cape it might of looked better. It was only after they took off from springfield and went to cobra island they ( dr mindbender,destro and the baroness) gave him his armour and flying thingy. At first I liked him but after a while he just became a even more huge buffoon then cartoon cobra commander.

    Gi Joe doesn't need to be realistic at all. They use laser guns for one. Two, gi Joe has always used sci fi aspects in their stories, especially cobra. Cobra La is the highest form of cobra. I think it works within this Joe universe. I just don't get why people want a realistic gi Joe. Realism tends to ruin what is special about a brand.

    • @mangalone4095
      @mangalone4095 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree. IMHO guns were only made "slightly" realistically to resemble real weapons to please DADS - the ones actually buying the toys for their kids. A mix of firearms and laser sci-fi guns was the trademark of Hasbro.

    Just got The figure back 31 years later. Excellent condition just had to go to Walmart - fabric section get a 'pirate green color thicker fabric .23 cents! trace the outline of the original flimsy torn Cape . Use a paper hole puncher for arm holes... BACK. Did not mind the DNA concept of Serpentor and the rival factor within Cobra, just the NUSANCE that came after... COBRA LAW.

  • @bobastu
    @bobastu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really informative and honest review. Serpentor's integration into the comic did seem a little rushed, but putting the remains in tanks, including Storm Shadow, made for an interesting revival. Larry Hama deserves much praise!

    • @johncaulfield8935
      @johncaulfield8935 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Serpentor was really Hasbro’s idea. Larry was basically forced to shoehorn the character into the comics, regardless of how little sense it made

    • @bobastu
      @bobastu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johncaulfield8935 thankfully Larry Hama did not cave in to Cobra-La. Seeing Resolute, knowing how good the Movie could have been, it makes me sad. If the comic story could be fleshed out by Resolute animators, applying the same realism, how glorious.

  • @GregXB3
    @GregXB3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I hear ya. Personally, in this day and age with cloning experiments and cloning sheep, and the mapping of the human genome, Serpentor isn't quite as ridiculous as he used to be... in a fictional setting, I'll buy into him. Like you said, he's just barely on the right side of the line. Cobra-La, though... should never have happened.

  • @jamiesands3331

    Serpentor’s outfit will eventually pop up on Rupaul’s Drag Race. I had a love-hate thing with the chariot- it was thin and flimsy, some of the parts were a little difficult to assemble (and keep together after assembly), and I felt it was a little “out there” in design- and yet it had a certain allure. I didn’t hate it! I even think it’s been copied/ripped off as an idea in principal over the years in movies, sci-fi, etc. Leave it to COBRA and the gang over at M.A.R.S. to create something original that actually left a legacy. Destro must be proud.

    Hey man I have been watching you channel over the past couple of days and I must say I really enjoy the time and detail you put into your reviews. I will spend a considerable amount of time watching the other videos. As a major Joe collector who is kinda-sorta returning to collecting Joes....only the original RAH this channel has been very nice. It's funny listening to you because I am probably a few years younger being born in 1980 and I was fine with the fantasy elements of Serpentor and Cobra La....ironic though was I had thought they went off the rails after this. While I liked some of the characters the Joes just went too goofy. Great channel and much success.

    Serpentors problem was that its hard to imagine destro creating anything that would detract from his own ambitions and its also hard to imagine the rank and file ever leaving off their allegiance to cobra commander whose vision and leadership was the sole basis for their worldwide success.
    That said, I enjoyed the figure.

    In the season 2 (pre-movie) episode 'My Favourite Things', Serpentor's face changes - as well as having his officially clean shaven face, he sometimes has a black handlebar moustache (like when he says 'but, I shall remember this day!', and when he's at Transylvania), a dark brown goatee (when Cobra Commander shows up for the first time, in the episode) and his 'King Takshaka' face (after Leatherneck's in hospital, after getting hit by Serpentor's 'poison dart', as revenge for 'destroying Serpentor's battle axe').

    I believe the target audience even back in the early eighties was boys who wanted fantasy kind of like Masters of the Universe. Even as a kid I was drawn more to the twins because of their look I like serpentor the dreadnaugts and Zartan. Characters who were colored like copperhead and Destro. Tbh most boys weren't going for the real world military look. I did like figures like Footloose Dusty and Duke. In my opinion I think the target audience was more for the fantasy element than the real world element because in reality that's what most boys wanted back then they didn't care about the realism of it they just wanted the fantasy and the sci-fi.

    What's even more bizarre Serpentor could pull the snakes off his shoulder and throw them at people. Another snake would immediately replace the one removed like some magical unlimited snake ammo. I think this was taken from the 1982 movie Conan the Barbarian where the villain could shoot his victims with a snake bow and arrow.

    • @HCC788

    15:30 I remember this actually being a Chekov's Shotgun of sorts in a few episodes of the cartoon, where Joes boarded the craft and yanked Serpentor's cape into the hover-engine to get him out of the air. So this may have been a feature, not a bug, of the Hasbro design team.

    I am one who didn't like the Serpentor character. I felt empathy for Cobra Commander. Cobra Commander was to me the head of Cobra. If I was Cobra Commander I would've gotten rid of Mindbender/Destro a the first hint of treachury...he did try to undermind the creation process of Serpentor, but still was shrugged off by Destro and Mindbender who had zero loyalty. Cobra Commander was blamed for thier failures time and time again. No credit to the GI Joe's for thier execution and defense of any given situation. At that time the older GI Joe fans were kinda screwed as thier favorite characters were slowly getting replaced by these far out, bizarre and unrealistic characters that lacked any kind of real attributes. The stories we're getting outlandish and senseless. Alot of us fans were turned away to something else. The one bright shiny spot in that era was SGT.Slaughter, who again was bringing another aspect into GI Joe....wrestling. But that's another story for another time. Cobra Commander was always the nemesis to GI Joe to me. Serpentor was just a slap in the face to fans of the original characters. Duke was a sideman to Flint and Lady Jay...And Hawk was getting less screentime. The comics nailed it with the Civil War between the factions...should've happened long before Serpentor was created. GI Joe took a nasty turn at that point in the cartoons...

Slaughter from wrestling & later had both to fight each other with their all around biceps. ..... As a kid, I also wondered what All mighty Serpentor looked like under his cowl, helmet, headdress... whatever you want to call it. I devised a plan to put his head under my dads car wheel. "Crack!"... I was sorely disappointed.

    Serpentor should do the Riccola commercials. "Riccolalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    Never had a problem with Serpentor. Cobra Commander to me was always analogous to Duke, who, while *A* leader, wasn't *THE* leader. I see Serpentor as more analogous to General Hawk: someone above the main guy we usually see. Like Blofeld in SPECTRE. Serpentor's introduction added another layer to Cobra IMO.

      Cobra Commander was THE leader before Serpentor’s creation, so don’t give me any of that bullshit

      @@johncaulfield8935 True, but not to me because of when I began watching. Since I came in after Serpentor's introduction, I have difficulty quite seeing anyone else as Cobra's leader, and don't like what I see as hostility towards him. It's kinda silly. It doesn't matter if Cobra Commander was leader before Serpentor, my comparison that he is the Hawk to Cobra Commander's Duke still stands.

    Great video, as always. My Serpentor got the left eye painted with slit pupil like a snake... is it a variation or just a mistake?

    Pretty much everything I liked best about G.I. Joe is everything you don't seem to care for. I loved sci-fi and fantasy stuff, and didn't want strictly real world toys. So I didn't care for toy cars and trucks, and the most realistic Joes were my least favorites.
    The 4 episodes that make up The Movie are my 4 favorite episodes. Loved Cobra-La, Serpentor, Golobulous, all of 'em.

      So you wanted GIJoe to be like Star Wars?

    • @leadbones
      @leadbones 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CapitanJusticia I liked it a lot more than Star Wars. I wanted it to not be boring. The early 80's stuff was great, the mid to late 80's stuff, up to 91' or so, was the best toy line ever, then after that, they went off the deep end with gimmicks and repaints. But yeah, what you wanted G.I. Joe to be was boring to me, and probably would not have kept selling for very long. I do agree that they eventually took it to far. That just happened a few years later for me than it did for you.

    Great review, but you've gotta learn to suspend your disbelief and use your imagination.
    Some of your complaints sounded like they were coming from a absolute realist, not a toy lover or someone that ever once sat down and had hour upon hour of fun with these toys as a child.
    Like the comments about the chariot, come on man. No kid is gonna see it that way. Seriously... Lol.
    But this is coming from someone (me) that to this day has never read a GI Joe comic book. The show was all I knew. And there was quite a bit of science fiction in delivering the story to people that way.
    That being said, I always preferred Serpentor to Cobra Commander. He was my ultimate Cobra Warrior. Facing off against Sergeant Slaughter, good times...
    Overall I very much enjoyed this review. Thanks for sharing man.

    The gold plastic of Serpentor was susceptible to Gold Plastic Syndrome. Especially the hips. Watching him move the figure around made me rather nervous.

    The back of his headdress is 2 high above his head. Need 2 fit it like a real king cobra's head. The stripe should also be on the back of his uniform.
