    I'm studying multimedia design, which includes graphic design as well. I'd say I'm doing self-learning and learning way more than there just by myself.
    I feel like I'm wasting time in a college. : -(
    I'm a 3D / 2D artist with pretty nice portfolio now, always learning from the internet. IMHO that's the way to go.

    This video was DOPE ASF. VERY INSIGHTFUL and informative, I took graphic design for, 4 years in high school and strongly agree with most of the points you made in this video. I have a lot of free time now and want to get back into graphic design but I think I want to freelance so I'm trying to "re-learn the fundamentals" right now before I start, b/c I know freelance can be overwhelming to a certain degree, if you're not ready. It was dope hearing you say how you think we are living in a "golden age" of graphic design. So you DEFINITELY just gained a subscriber. Lookin' forward to more of your videos bro. Keep up the great work.

    I was talking with someone earlier last week and one of the points we discussed was the fact that most of our knowledge base was in fact, self-taught. I went to college for it, but I have a hard time really advising people to go since I feel like the majority of my learning has been self-taught and just from experiencing projects with clients.

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MsSquarebanana there is nothing like learning by doing and honestly all the theory and principles can be obtained cheap or free and you can buy the books from the reading list of any course yourself. There is no justification for the current price tag of that education and in a world where there are less 9 to 5 jobs in this industry and less of it is about your pedigree and more about your portfolio.

    Good points. Many learners and aspiring designers do not appreciate the importance of attention to detail in all areas of design. Creativity is important, but if there are typos or low res images, broken links or lack of a coherent grid, it is of no use to anyone.

    Biggest issue with people is that they expect to only do this for 1-2 maybe 3 years just doing web design alone and expect to be doing this as a full time job making 60k a year.. When that's not the case.. Especially if you're just starting... Being able to design and program a site even if you can only do small bits of programming helps a lot. Providing Hosting services for the people you do the design/development for, etc, Goes a long way.... With just doing web Designs alone will not make enough to support ones self unless you're doing it through a company... but if you're trying to being your own boss working from home independent.. People need to realize they need to branch out.

    I am wanting to get into Graphic Design and have recently purchased Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC. I've been doing some freelancing for friend's businesses. I've done some Facebook advertising and a few business cards, but I really don't have the time or money to go to college. However, I'm a quick study and most of this stuff I can teach myself at home. Do you think it would be practical to try and get into a business that does Graphic Design without a formal college education?

    What are some of the websites for classes you mentioned? There is one that you mention and I'm not sure if you are saying Linda or Linden, apologies. I have done a free class through udacity on design, but intro to design, no emphasis on graphic design. I am an artist, specifically illustration and photography. I did a bit of web dev and page design in my past, back when i was working for my university. My knowledge in Ps and Ai is slightly above basic, but my issue is that I don't have a lot of time and self discipline is a big issue with my personality. I definitely need a course or something to keep me in check, your help is very appreciated! thanks.

    Hi RB! My name is ivan. I am an electrical engineer and after 5 years of practicing my profession, i came to a conclusion that this career is not for me. So i took time of self reflection and realized what i am truly interested and passionate about. I've always loved art, I was in the school publication in college, i was the editor in chief, and I enjoy making posters and coming up with fresh ideas. But now, i am finding it hard to shift industry. Nobody would want to employ someone without prior "professional" experience. what advice can you give me and the rest who are dealing with the same situation?

    Hey, just wondering how influential you think grades are be compared to other aspects. e.g. would a general employer simply look at the quality of the folio and how effectively you can communicate? Thanks

    • @jameslegg742
      @jameslegg742 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      just a quick follow up so I'm a little clearer. If for example I have terrible grades but have an excellent folio, would I be less likely to obtain a design job?

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Legg I've never seen an employer in creative services ask about grades or a report card and if your professors are telling you it matters they are full of crap. And if they want to challenge what I say just because I'm "some guys on TH-cam", firstly I've been in the hiring chair when I worked at a NYC agency, and we didn't care. I got that job without a degree. I've done vetting for companies hiring designers.... I hire designers... I work with business owners everyday.... we don't care... we really care about you helping us make money, whether we can get along with you, whether you can add to the bottom line of the company and solve our problems. Work tells us that, not grades or paperwork. Most of us are becoming less and less interested in degrees all together.. we care about the work because the work is how we get paid and deliver for the client...

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Legg They don't matter to us in the hiring chair.

    • @jameslegg742
      @jameslegg742 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Roberto Blake It definitely makes sense employers would care more about the work. I was just a bit worried because even thought I would end up with a nice piece of work, I would lose grades for not using certain or enough techniques and I was thinking it would effect my chances of employment. Thanks for the in-depth response, I also really like your videos.

    I'm in need of your advice! I'm 27, I have a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree from SAIC, however, before I graduated, I accepted a generous job offer to work at a medical reinsurance agency. I wanted to save some cash and continue school with my earnings later in 2 or so years... unfortunately, 5 years later, I'm still working for this health insurance agency and I hate it! I need and want a career change and I have my eyes set on graphic design. I'm worried that it's too late to start learning now I've been out of school for so long :( do potential employers or clients look at how long I've been out of school when presenting a portfolio?

    Great advice on starting a design career. When it comes finding work, how do you get yourself into the door without a degree. Most of the jobs I saw on job search engines usually have a degree requirement required. And there is also jobs in my area that seem like they just hire college intern? And if I only so far have 9 great works can I still start applying for work?

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Stephanie Noel Networking. And asking for the opportunity and having a body of work. If a girl said she only dates tall guys I'd ask her out anyway because I'm confident that I'm a nice and outgoing guy, and could win her over. You always take a shot but you give yourself the best shot. Someone making an intro and vouching for you counts more. I got all of my jobs even an agency job in NYC beating kids from the best schools. Why? Portfolio, personality and presentation skills... That's always what it takes. Getting in door.. It's better to have a human being open the door and usher you through than pay for a ticket... Human beings always are the answer... By the way if you only have 9 pieces today there is no good reason to only have 9 tomorrow.

      +MissMystica Do a lot of work and research when you're not on the clock. Build the body of work for your next job. Think about your career path over the next 5-10 years and where you want to be and what you have accmoplished. Do not get comfortable. Learn social media, and learn real world networking. Learn marketing. Learn about the business side of this industry and try to think as if you would as the owner of the company...

    Hey Roberto, I absolutely love your channel and just want to thank you for selflessly helping a lot of us that are still struggling.
    I have a question, I live in Europe and want to market to American clients. As far as I understand, contracts are basically useless in this scenario. How do I earn a client's trust and make sure I get paid without relying on freelance sites like Upwork? I'd imagine clients would be hesitant to make an upfront percentage payment without knowing for sure that they'll get the work they need.

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike M. You'd be surprised. I've worked with clients all over the world. All you have to do is logically eliminate that anxiety. Social media and your website can help. LinkedIn recommendations, video testimonials from satisfied customers, and a skype video call, are all ways to overcome those objections. As for not using freelancing sites, content marketing and seo and networking events. reference my hour long video on advice for freelancers and watch it all the way through for more context.

    • @mikem.65
      @mikem.65 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Roberto Blake Thank you SO MUCH for this comment. It has already eliminated most of my concerns. As for the marketing part, I do plan to use the techniques you've mentioned in the past, I have watched the hour long video and I'm subscribed to the mailing list. What I was trying to say is that those sites provided some sort of security for clients and I wanted to branch out from that but your comment has given me a lot of reassurance. Thanks again!

    Are there online courses or scholarships for 25+ yo graphic designers that have experience, but not formal education and skills that graphic design students have? What are your suggestions for designers who have lost many years studying sciences that have no connections with graphic designer, but are self-taught and had to start making some small amount of money in graphic design, because they can not find job in their field of study?
    Thanks

    Because the ease of access to the field grew, did that have an effect on the entry level skill required? I can imagine that the increase in competition may have raised the bar. Then again, I could see over-saturation making it seem like most newcomers are below average thanks to accessibility.

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +C.S. Repraved Its a combination of both but all advancements in technology produce that kind of outcome for an industry and saturation is nothing to be concerned or afraid of or resentful of. Most people are intimidated by the noise and clutter. In a room where everyone is trying to be the brightest most colorful flower, the guy or girl in simple black on black stands out and looks elegant and everyone seems gaudy by comparison... it's a matter of knowing how to leverage nuance and make weakness a strength.

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ScoBarY That's not how it works. The typically isn't an association between Graphic Design and the video game industry, why does everyone think there is?

    • @scobary5982

      +Roberto Blake I don't know why people think like that. I'm just with a terrible doubt! I don't know if I study fine arts or graphic design, but I know what I would like to be, which is a concept artist or something in video games related to art.

    what do u mean by Practioner designer?

    • @RobertoBlake
      @RobertoBlake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Agha Abdullah Someone who is actually currently doing design work regularly. For example, I wouldn't refer to a university professor who has 20 years of experience, but has been teaching for 10 years a practitioner. The reality is that they have not competed in the modern marketplace and outside of academia or an art director or studio manager position they would likely not be hired to do the work itself. If they are not actively using the most current version of the tools or unaware of the current standards, they may know all practical design theory, but not execute in a way relevant to the marketplace. Someone with less experience but is working for paying clients or an employer is an "active design practitioner". They are doing the work, they know what the current industry standards are because they are doing them, not reading about them, they know what it takes to get hired because they are competing or recently competed in the marketplace. Current Design Practice vs Established Design Theory/Principles. Yes you need to know the principles and basics, but if you can't apply them relevant to the demands of employer tomorrow, how useful is that?

    Funny fact that illustrates the importance of selling yourself today:
    When I got out of school for Drafting design I was up for the same job as the best student in the class; I was easily the worst in the class... I technically should have failed but I got my diploma still somehow?? Who got the job? Me. Because I'm good at interviews and he's not.
    Capitalism!
