That ladder lift is truly awesome. I am a machinist in my 50's and more often than not I'm more and more frustrated by the lack of skill and craftsmanship that I witness in all the skilled trades I see. You, my friend, are a true craftsman. You display ingenuity, knowledge, and skill and freely share that with us. Thank you for your great videos. They are refreshing to watch. Don't ever change who you are.

It's hard to believe you haven't witnessed ppl "TRY THE EASY WAY" and die? There are tons of videos of humans that "THINK" they know what they're doing only to have killed or maimed themself or others in the process. It may seem like a good idea at first but those HIDDEN VARIABLES OF PHYSICS will ALWAYS WIN against "I THOUGHT IT WOULD WORK".
If that ladder's rungs were not DESIGNED to support the weight it's over. This is how you get sued out of business with one wrong mistake. They do make something called a "LADDER Hoist" (some mechanical others manual). I would suggest using a device that is "DESIGNED & TESTED" as well as COMPLIANT with safety REGS. This guy seems to have it figured out for THIS ONE VIDEO but that doesn't mean his idea is "FOOL PROOF". Back in the day without SAFETY REGS many ppl died due to "OH IT WILL WORK WATCH THIS TRICK.... "

Great work. You did the smart thing by using Stay-Brite 8. I have been in the HVAC and commercial Refrigeration trade for 48 years now and I wince every time I watch otherwise experienced Techs braze new copper joints, TXVs, filter/dryers, and etc. What a waste of time and money. By the way, the little stub on the end of the TXV sensing bulb is a manufacturing leftover from charging the power head and bulb.

When the evaporator is below the condenser that far, for optimal oil return to the compressor the suction line should have a oil p-trap bent into the lineset or a pre bent fitting. As far as I know most manufacturers recommend putting one in especially on the 2 story applications. Great install.

Great point that almost the majority miss, but engineering has changed a little bit on the oil return trap. With the TXV and scroll compressors Factory Reps want NO trap due to the velocity is improved without it. Don’t sweat lines in with the shrader valves still in. Ummmm DIY install? Sure you have the equipment? I know you can save a ton but those harbour freight vacuum pumps kinda suck and before getting digital gauges the compound gauges can clue you in on things like non condensables in the lines if you’ve made a mistake watching the needles. If they don’t remain steady could be a bad txv as well if they fluctuate back and forth. No bueno. Do you’re homework . Can become a very expensive install and make sure you find out certain lingo like super heat sub cool , dry wet bulb etc etc. almost forgot to also add look at the installation guide, on the sensing bulb some manufacturers want it installed on top some on the bottom of the suction line , some have them held on already in place if they’re already clamped I’m never solder the line with it still clamped on the suction line. You can damage that sensing bulb and it’s placement when you first open the system is just to keep it from bouncing around during transport so read the install manual for proper placement of it after you sweat the lines properly. Umm let me mind my bizz I wish you luck.

Great videos, great work! Just a safety idea on the ladder-lift operation, when you're ready to lift, back your truck up close enough to the ladder so the top, upper edge of the cargo box prevents the ladder from possibly going over center outward, accidentally pulling you off of the roof and doing a header outward, down into the parking lot. It looks like the top of your truck's cargo box is high enough to allow that. With the a/c unit inboard, between the ladder foot and the wall, it appears that would work. Also, long Tap-Cons securing the ladder footboard to the floor? I was a safety officer at an airline for a while, some years ago. Cheers!

The plugs keep the nitrogen in the coil, so when you remove those plugs and hear pressure come out, you have just confirmed that there is no leak in that coil. In hind sight, I should have pulled the plug out BEFORE putting it in, so that if no nitrogen came out I could easily get a replacement. Cheers man

I also agree that you need to have some kind of fall arrest anchorage and wear the appropriate harness and shock absorbing lanyard. Philosophically you are trading your personal safety for economy that primarily benefits your client. Telehandler? Genie? Crane of some kind? They all cost $, yes, but they substantially reduce the likelihood of becoming a job site incident statistic. You're worth it, ask your family!

This is a very neat design. It seams like the weak link is the safety factor. In some of the shots (especially when the ladder was adjusted higher) you were leaning into the ladder crane. I can imagine if the shackle, cable, or winch failed you could lose balance and fall off the roof. If I were you, I would add an extension to the bar at an angle that comes back toward the user. This extension would be parallel with the roof.
This modification would have two benefits. Firstly, the user would have more mechanical advantage. Secondly, the user would be lifting directly upward instead of at an angle toward the edge of the roof.

    • @diyhvacguy
