    Last year I was shopping around to buy my wife a replacement piano which she uses to accompany her violin students. Your video was my first introduction to the Steingraeber pianos. Thank you so much for doing this video. WOW!! After listening to this I started comparing every grand piano and I must say the Steingraeber, to me, is the most beautiful sounding piano on earth. Even the 170 is extraordinary!! I'll take your word for it that the 170 does not feel as well as the larger grands, but it sure sounds beautiful.BTW, you are a fantastic player. If I were a rich man I would buy many Steingraebers, have them shipped to the USA and donate them to various Universities, music halls, and of course get one for my wife and granddaughters.More people should be exposed to Steingraeber. After all was said and done I stayed within our budget and bought my wife a new Kawai K-500. It's a very nice sounding upright,..but, but those Steingraebers!!

      @@nomebear I'm a part time audio engineer, and what people might not really "get" - even a lot of engineers, is that his mikes in an AB configuration sitting just ABOVE the plane of the lid, at about 7' (2.3 meters) AVOIDS the cross currents of waves when you close mic a piano, in whatever configuration, because of the direct sound off the soundboard (Vertical) and the wave pattern reflecting off the lid. ( horizontal ). Fine engineers mostly recommend removing the lid for studio recording, but if that is not practical, do what this guy is doing, he's doing it right.

    The 170, for me, is astounding in it's depth of tone and balance across the registers (despite its short length).

    The E-272 with or without the gimmicks, is just about the best piano made today. If money were no object, this would be my choice. But i had the chance to grab a reconditioned model EN-280 Bechstein (last made in the old style, with 88 agraffes) and it is very good.

    • @hastensavoir7782

    • @studentjohn35
      @studentjohn35 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hastensavoir7782 The old Bechstein E270 was in production from around 1902 to 1970. It evolved over the dcades, with fishtail rims turning into steam-bent ones. The EN 280 was the same basic design but elongated. It went from 1973 up to 1993. After that they switched over to the model D 282, which is a totally new re-design. I still prefer the old E270, but thry are hard to find

    LOL... people are saying they like the A170....maybe because the mic changes position every time you play a piano model?? We can't possibly get a comparison like this! But what is amazing to me is the size of the cheek blocks...That allows for very big sounds... up close and in person...The 170 doesn't compare to the C D or E

  • @clintondavis5008

    My pianist wife tried all these models in a single demonstration hall, and the best, on that occasion, was the A170. I remember the sound of it to this day. Individual examples vary, and this video was not a fair comparison because the pianos were not in the same room with same acoustics. The concluding judgement seemed unfairly dismissive of what many regard as the best small grand available today.

    When you play the first piece, especially those repeating thirds in left hand tend to be very unpleasant to hear like the amount of energy put in that string was escaping in a bad manner I think it's common in short grands, btw could it be 170 is voiced with less care?

    • @BohumirStehlik
      @BohumirStehlik  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that the 170 is voiced with less care. It is one of the most expensive grand pianos on the earth... But thank you. Interesting point.

    and what is your recommendation among the three piano contestants for me who likes to play with several genres, classic jazzy and easy listening?

    • @BohumirStehlik
      @BohumirStehlik  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say it in general. If I have space and money, I wouldn't buy a short grand piano. Short pianos have too many compromises. On the other hand long pianos are very often "big whales". Wouldn't go under 190cm (f.e. Steinway A). For me a perfect size is actually mod C, around 220-235cm. But it is just my opinion. Other will tell you that full size grand should be the best for everything. But of course, when we talk about low register, then yes, the longer the better.

  • @Pleyel204
    @Pleyel204 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really not a good idea to play the longest ones first. That's physics: a short string can not sound better than a long one. It is the same for the action, it is much shorter in the 170 than in the 272, and therefore the balance is different. The 170 is probably one of the very best in this size range. Then choosing between top pianos it is mostly a matter of taste. Steingraebers have a very distinctive sound that I love. Cheers

    • @BohumirStehlik
      @BohumirStehlik  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand your point and I know what you mean. But I am a pianist and I know what I want from a piano. I wasn't inspired. You can see in my other video that I compared the 170 with an old model and I fel in love with the old one. Something with the new 170 was missing. I don't say it is not a superb piano. But not for my taste.

    • @Pleyel204
      @Pleyel204 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BohumirStehlik Yes I listened to that video too. Strangely while I usually like old pianos I did not like so much the sound of the old Steingraeber (as far as we can judge with a recording). Probably we have different tastes. Anyway recordings have their limits too especially they can not reproduce the feeling while playing.
