      Yes...to be of a certain age and remember so many of the iconic stars who guest starred on this show and no longer with us is quite sad. Alice Faye, Noah Beery...I never really watched the show when it aired, but I'm impressed that it was able to get the old time movie stars that it did. And, by the way, what ever became of Alene Golonka? She seemed to be in most everything back in the 70's...

    I remember watching the Love Boat (and Fantasy Island following it) on a regular basis every Saturday night back in the early-mid 1980s when it was still originally on the air. There was something so COMFORTING and SOOTHING about the opening theme as well as each and every episode. Entertaining too. I still get those same wonderful feelings today when I see the opening and closing credits and theme.
    Being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional home at the time, I watched LOTS of tv as a way to provide myself with escape and comfort from my misery and escapist fantasy was exactly the very right kind of formula that I really needed and just PERFECT for a saturday night, especially after a whole weeks worth of depressing, stressful nonsense.
    But the fact that i watched and loved the love boat was my MOST closely guarded and BIGGEST well kept secret at the time. Because a teenaged boy simply did NOT admit to his fellow teens about watching love boat as well as being a fan of that show. Not unless he wanted to be the target of ridicule. There were many tv shows around that time a teen could openly admit to being a fan of. But The Love Boat wasnt one of them.
    Saturday nights are just not the same without The Love Boat (and Fantasy Island) airing new episodes at its regular time (Love Boat, 9pm. Fantasy Island, 10pm). It's a crying shame, really.

    • @hugejohnson5011
      @hugejohnson5011 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidallan2951 I gave up on television long ago. It seemed more "real" when I was young, and the big players here in the U.S. were ABC/NBC/CBS. The networks were television, and I found things to watch that warranted my attention. Watching "Wide World of Sports" with my father is a fond memory. Evel Knievel's jumps! Boxing. Winter sports. And, prime time shows were much more of an event it seems. To be home at 8 or 9 o'clock to see " Emergency" or " Hawaii Five-0". Too many choices now, and I don't look at any of it, other than a few years ago I was still watching some of the Dangerous Crab Fishing Guys, and the Gold Miners, with the big tractors and such. But, I don't even own a television anymore. The ol' lady and me split the house 50-50. She got the inside, and I got the outside! It's all for the better, I was a trucker, and wasn't home enough to matter.
      Good to see your input on this, and know that I'm not alone in the nostalgia department. Thanks!

      @@knowyourlimitations.6402 @Know Your Limitations. It truly is a beautiful montage and coincidentally inspiring. Watching this video, I also find it bittersweet because the people we grew up watching represent a TV we don't see anymore. A kind of television that once mattered and was worth watching. Such an example that comes to mind is the late, great character actor James Gregory. His playfully roguish, but yet knowing smile at 2:17 says, "Listen, I know what you're going through because I've been there. Believe me, things will get better. Just hang in there and things will be all right. And *you'll* be all right. OK?"

    I remember Melissa Anderson as Mary Ingallls on LITTLE HOUSE. In one of the show 's most infamous episodes, Mary went blind and never regained her sight(though her husband regained his). I'm convinced that this plot development was a key factor in the artistic and ratings decline of the series.

      I think it was part of faithfulness to the book and real life, but it was no fun to watch for me personally. Neither were Melissa Sue Anderson's later horror roles I watched (on TV anyway) became they were her, then regretted it. It seemed "Little House On The Prairie" daughters never emotionally shrugged off potential drama or tragedy in the interest of coping with it better. From "I hate that Nellie Olson" / "Laura. Don't say hate. Don't even think hate." to that blindness drama. It seemed no one ever just cried softly to themselves or had a "silver lining is my other senses will become stronger; some other people are blind, too" attitude.

    The love boat had such an eclectic mix of actors as its guest stars.
    Actors who are on their way to stardom, struggling actors who dont become successful and famous, once famous but now washed up actors, famous actors from the golden age of hollywood in the 1940s-1950s, currently famous actors, actors from successful but since canceled tv series, etc.
    I sometimes wonder if any of the actors who appeared on Love Boat ever considered it beneath their personal and/or professional dignity to have done a stint on Love Boat. Im reminded of actress Rue McClanahan who did a few Love Boat episodes in between her 2 hit series: Maude and The Golden Girls. In her autobiography she refers to The Love Boat as "Captain Stubing's celebrity purgatory."

      The dad also appeared in several Love Boat episodes, just not in this season. Greg, Bobby, and Cindy got snubbed. Barry Williams, who played Greg, seemed especially bothered by the rejection, theorizing the reason for not appearing is that Aaron Spelling didn't like him. He never got an invite to Fantasy Island, another Aaron Spelling production, either.
      Another fun fact: Only one of the seven Gilligan's Island castaways never appeared on the Love Boat. That would be The Professor, who from a visual standpoint you'd figure would be the best male cast member for the obligatory pool scenes. I've read Russell Johnson didn't like doing scenes shirtless (he never appeared on Gilligan's Island with his shirt off), so maybe that was the hang-up.
