    Great review of the Jefferson Nickel with the importance of having the Full Steps grade. The Planchet education is invaluable knowledge.

    The market is crazy. The 1961 D Jefferson on the left, steps looks like just a few steps shown, $13,000!!!!? wow, if that's the case, I should get all 30 of my coins graded.

    I found one! Now what? 😅 I just like finding and collecting coins I never know who to take them to. NGC is closer but I hear PCGS does better at auctions and I read about CAC stickers and how they double check quality but the system confuses me. Yeeeears ago a good friend of mine taught me about collecting with a wheat penny and ever since I've held the hobby dear. Thank you blue ridge for educating!!

    I made a comment about nickles with full steps, yesterday when I answered the question for the Morgan silver dollar,give away. And lo and behold, you made this video today, I see 2 steps on the coin on the left, and I get the "curve", your talking about. I am glad about that curve, because I see graded nickles with full steps and I have seen them with only a few. You picked the best pair, for comparison. Good job my man, I'm going to go thru my nickles today. Thanks for the good information. The old guy in Florida 😎😃

      Conrad Pons I have wondered the same thing. I actually took a screenshot of BlueRidge’s side by side in the video, so I could zoom in and get a closer look. I too see only about 2 steps on this “full steps” coin. But I guess when you compare it to the other one that is totally mushy, and knowing the typical quality of the period, I can see how they could grade on a curve. I think I would be more hesitant to get anything graded though, knowing there is no true black & white rule. Or...maybe it plays to our favor? Not sure.🤔

    Excellent video! No lie: I just picked a 1964-D AND a 1961-D in a single roll I talked the lady at the gas station to sell me during halftime of the AFC Playoff game today. They are both heavily circulated unsurprisingly (not a bank roll). Plus the '61 has the wildest mint error I've ever seen with an incuse ring around the whole coin and added material (looks like wire) over the top in one spot. The mint mark is also bisected by the odd ring. I'm a Buffalo Nickel guy, so I've seen some wild stuff, but just head scratching. I've gotta find your contact info so I can send you some pics! Needless to say I'm headed back to the gas station at OOB.

    • @cheezmosarcazmo3478
      @cheezmosarcazmo3478 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a general rule, collectors should never attempt to clean their coins..... never! If you were to come across a nice specimen, but felt a burning desire to spiff it up a little by means of a chemical bath, or even lightly padding the coin with the softest rag you could find....then send it off to a 3rd party grader for authentication and grading......they will know immediately while examining under high magnification. Chemicals will alter the original color and luster of the coin, and even the softest of rags will create friction on the surfaces of the coin, which will cause microscopic scratches. Most of the grading services do offer conservation services for an additional fee if the coin warrants it. :-)

    I have a 1976 DDR Dime and I just emailed pictures to you yesterday so I am not expecting to hear back for a while but it was a coin I found in my change and I’ve never seen one like it anywhere. I’ve never had a coin graded and I’m nervous about sending it somewhere. Im new to coin roll hunting and the find was unexpected. It is definitely DDR and not die deterioration. I was happy about finding it but again I’m nervous about sending it somewhere and kind of confused about the process as well. I wish there was a way to get it graded in person. Im in Maryland. I don’t know of any reputable graders or even where to start really.

    So I just found one of these literally 20 minutes ago and it is in incredible condition. I had to check it 3 times because I thought there's no way this coin is 60+ years old and still in nearly pristine condition. And it appears to have distinguishable steps on the inverse. Of course with my good luck there'll be something wrong with it and it'll be worth 4 cents.

    In dog shows certain breeds that are actively used in hunting as well as for showing , if a particular dog has visible scars from hunting injuries ,
    they are not "graded"/judged on a lower scale compared to a contender with no scars that is not used for hunting , because that is what the particular dog was bred for . I'm using a terrible analogy to make my point which is; If a coin is struck on a planchet that already had nicks in it , it shouldn't be down-graded . But I think I just sortof answered my query ... because (unless it's a die nick) there's no way to tell if the nick was pre or post delivery to a bank . I'm new at this so if anyone can tell me whether or not a coin that has a "nick" in it that is an "outy" due to die damage and not a scratch due to use , whether the coin would be seriously downgraded ? I'm asking bc I recently found in a Coinstar machine a really nice 1967 Kennedy half dollar with an "outy" nick on the obverse and I'm wondering if it's a waste of time/$ to have it graded ? Also , there is a little bit of his ear broken off that is clearly a die damage thing . No way the ear bit broke off during circulation bc the coin is in FAR too good of condition for the chip to have occurred after release . Sorry for the LONG comment !

    I've got some nickels that I need to have a good look at. I'm pretty sure I have some from 1939 as well. Did you do a video recently on those? I'm pretty sure I watched one.

    Hello thank you for for the verry Interesting video, i s their a way to post pictures on here I believe I have one of the 1961 double die nickel with the full steps, I don't know the exact grade of the coin but it is a pretty shiny coin. Don't really know where to go with it

    Hey Brother,
    I noticed in the video you said the nickel needs 5 out of 6 steps to get the FS designation. While this is true, you need those 5 steps to be in a row. You need five in a row from the top down or the bottom up. PCGS sent me an email on this subject last year and is the reason I now know. You probably already knew, but just didn't say it in the video...

    I can only see one to two steps on the nickel that sold for 13k, so why is this considered full steps?

    61 d does have value if it's a high grade
