    Often times people really wonder if there's such a difference in dry blasting and wet blasting. Today we aimed to help everyone understand that dry blasting is aggressive, damaging for some applications and just non effective and metal finishing work when comparing it to wet blasting. Don't get me wrong dry blasting has its advantages in some applications but controlling the dust is the main issue in todays times. Switching to a wet blast system for cleaning surfaces, preparing for new coatings, or doing metal finishing applications is the best investment any business or hobbyist could make. For more information on how to integrate a wet blasting system into your current shop or workflows please follow the link above for more information.

    For painting the sandblasting is better because the primer will stick to rough porous surface better , but wetblasting would be nice step before polishing , like rims etc..

      @VaporHoningTechnologies  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Ovais Saand You're exactly right in that rough surfaces provide great adhesion properties for paint and other coatings. However, wet blast is also great for preparing surfaces for coatings as long as the correct abrasive is chosen.

      Also if your using sand to dry blast make sure you clean down your parts that your preparing to paint because the silicone content in sand can cause you issues. Try not to use sand at all.

    • @VaporHoningTechnologies
      @VaporHoningTechnologies  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@scottfogarty1249 In the Vapor Honing Process we do not use sand at all. We blast with Glass Bead, Aluminum Oxide, etc.

      The Wet Blast process can use the same abrasives as dry blast, therefore, we use Aluminum Oxide or Silicon Carbide to prep for coatings.

    All due respect, that is a fine result you have produced. As the owner of a media blasting company I know the finish is a result of the media and pressures used during the blasting process. I wet blast when dust suppression is needed due to the proximity of others or the material being remove (Lead Paint for example). Glass bead, plastic bead, soda and so on in their various sizes can produce a almost polished surface on soft metal like aluminum, brass and copper. The desired finish is determined by what the finished product is going to be, such as polished, painted, clear coated or powder coated to name a few. This video is very good and of high quality but kind of misleading. I mean no disrespect, you are obviously a professional who produces a great finished product. Most high quality machines produce a finish that reflects the owner of that machine. When a person studies and practices their craft he or she will produce a more superior finish than those who don't and you produce a superior finish for sure. Sand Blasting is never a good idea, sand contains silica, is inconsistent in its hardness/density and leaves a dust and debris in the pores of the material being blasted. The same/better/ more consistent finish is produced with glass be it crushed or bead.
    Great work Sir

    Thank you for sharing this informative knowledge. So after looking at this video, I can conclude and think that the dry sand blast is more preferable to be the method of spraying the undercoat paint as that rough surface are usually give a good and better undercoat paint finished. The smooth finished that comes from the wet blasting are good to be the method of Chromatic colour as usually they won't need any undercoat layer. Thank you.

    I would have put some studs in those threaded holes due to the damage from the process. Beats having to retap those holes and maybe a lost of metal on the thread walls.

  • @paparoysworkshop

    Each method has its place. The rougher texture of sand blasting allows primers and paint a better surface to adhere to. I knew a fellow who did a lot of powder coating and no mater how clean a part was, he would sandblast it first.

    What was used to blast this part? Aluminum oxide or glass bead?

  • @azmelnasir
    @azmelnasir 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The main reason to blast clean is to get the profile or peak to give good adhesion between primer and substrate. Dry blast is better surface preparation compare to wet blast but in certain environments issues wet blast will take place .

  • @steves5632
    @steves5632 ปีที่แล้ว

    A little confused, why not compare it to dry blast using 70/100 glass beads? Looks about the same as vapor blast plus the glass beads "peen" the surface that actually closes up the pores and can help maintain the glossy finish.

    I was wondering, can you upload a video where you wet blast a camshaft that has let oil, how would you say it? I guess bake into the cams itself? Like especially old engines, that people don't take care of, like when the camshaft is straight brownish orange, you can't remove the colour. I'd like to see if you can spray that off, and no i'm not talking about rust. It's still a working engine.

      We recommend a thorough rinsing process, blow all areas off with a high
      pressure air hose, allow the part to dry and repeat the process.
      However for the most difficult areas, you can use soda with wet blasting
      as well. This will give you an exceptional finish without the worry.

      There are some DIY videos and blogs which can answer your questions. I will stress to NOT use sand under any circumstances because of it's silica content. I have built or restored or re-purposed four bikes thus far and currently building a 250cc 2 stroke Yamaha DS-7 as a cafe racer. Budget? $1,000. I have an advantage in surface prep because of where I work but with everything else I map out the process and seek as cheap a source as possible. The 1972 DS-7 "donor" bike I bought for $90 at a motorcycle salvage yard, title included. There is an old saying that there are three important aspects of any job: Price, Speed, Quality but you can have only two, the third will be sacrificed.
