R.I.P Ian Curtis you blue spark of ideas, wish you could see the impact you've created on so many different bands and genres and how much of good music would derive from your influence, carry on.
one of today's most original and best post punk bands covering a hugely influential post punk band. This cover is fantastic, they took Ceremony and gave a new take on it, rather than just a rehash. Its not better, its just a different song, Ian Curtis would have loved this.
A friend of mine turned me onto this cover tonight. I really loved how strange and truly creative Xiu Xiu's first album of originals is but have not kept up with his current output. I can see what some people don't get him but I think he is extremely talented.....truly a bizarro world genius! T hat's high praise coming from me!
This really does amplify the emotion the original song was suppose to convey times a thousand. You can really feel the sadness, grief, and rage here. A complete nervous breakdown and a decent into madness. Except it sounds more like someone going on a killing spree in the name of vengeance rather than a suicide. I love it.
as far as covers go, New Order's cover of this song is probably one of my top 3 favorite songs of all time. when i hear Xiu Xiu's version, i often find myself asking, damn, is this better than New Order's? yeah, it's that good. so suck it, Xiu Xiu haters.
I love Xiu Xiu all the more for taking Joy Division to a place they might well have gone were they still around today. Might have gone, who knows for sure, and I don't really care - I'm too busy dancing.
i saw Galaxie 500 when they opened for the Cocteau Twins. I remember the audience booing them, but it was St. Louis. I personally love them and yes, their cover of Ceremony is amazing.
I really dont think you can sensibly judge Xiu Xiu by the standards of musicality (or if you do, you miss the more important bit). Sure, its pretentious and overwrought - but to me it also has a real emotional truth. If you listen to music to sound nice, you wont like anything they have done. If you listen to music to feel something, this is a band that could mean a lot to you if you're open to it.
i agree with you, except the part about the music being pretentious and it not sounding "nice". it's too emotionally candid to be pretentious. i also find parts of some of their songs particularly peaceful and soothing, but that's just me and maybe I'm strange.
listen to New Order's version that is the original, the Joy Division version is a demo, and if u still saying this shit of Xiu Xiu version more than the original u have problems.
I heard this 20 years ago. Just found the original, and thought - I've heard this somewhere before....but damn New Order got it, though this ain't bad...

@@zirtapot57 Pretty hilarious how many people come here with hateful ignorant comments, then change their mind down the line. I'm glad you enjoy it now, I just wish people weren't so quick to shit on someone else's creative output just because it doesn't suit their taste.
Lemme come back and think about this as there are actually good parts to this cover, though the use of the sound effects are saying "No", it's because I don't particularly like the use of the sound effects that are pointing to say, no...........sorry
-"Ian Curtis wish list." Sigh, life is as meaningless as you all make it and if you don't enjoy or understand Xiu Xiu's experimental persona or creating mutilation into sound then don't listen to it and go elsewhere but maybe by chance, open your bottled mind into respecting that there are other genres of music out there than your mainstream bull.
you're completely missing the point, this was meant to sound off the rails and very anxious and unnerving, it's meant to be very experimental sounding. You're meant to feel like the world is crashing around you and that he is trying to fight desperately at the love that's causing him pain and then looks and just stares at it all as it's crashing down. It's not meant to sound perfectly like the original. This is an extremely emotional song about the torment that Ian felt, the extreme that he took it to in this cover was his interpretation and it was meant to be so unnerving and emotional. If you don't feel that way then i think you should listen instead of feel, this cover expressed those emotions perfectly.
I'm glad I don't. I get it...they want to be different. However, never mind an aesthetic difference. It's simply out of tune on many levels. I hope this doesn't represent the sound of their entire output.
R.I.P Ian Curtis you blue spark of ideas, wish you could see the impact you've created on so many different bands and genres and how much of good music would derive from your influence, carry on.

Anything Xiu Xiu covers turns to gold
it was already gold
But this is golder
Especially when they do it with Michael Gira.

it's chilling- Stewart really channels Ian there...
Thats gave me goosebumps
Really enjoyed this cover. Would like to hear Xiu Xiu covers of Neutral Milk Hotel songs.
Would be wild
Sounds a lot better live. You can really hear the fear and sadness in his voice in person.

nalemag New Order technically is Joy Division though, without Ian Curtis
Yeah I’m not sure if I’d call New Order doing this song a cover, it’s more like them completing a song they couldn’t finish as Joy Division
i just got this comment to 69 likes and it only took 9 years. hell yeah
I love Xiu Xiu all the more for taking Joy Division to a place they might well have gone were they still around today. Might have gone, who knows for sure, and I don't really care - I'm too busy dancing.
not sure if this is preventing my suicide or contributing to it but I'm happy it exists regardless
a masterpiece.

It’s funny how people either love or hate this

Thank you for properly identifying this as a Joy Division cover, not New Order.
this is absolutely brilliant. for those of you who dislike this....you are underdeveloped as human beings.
