Wildwood Prepper Sorry it was so late. Took a little longer than it usually does. Should have just painted them from to begin with.

I was mainly concerned with getting the grease off and not leaving a petroleum scent on them. I bought the traps pretty much just for prepping. I hope you didn't feel rushed.

I just sand paper (Emery cloth or steel wool ) the new paint off the bar where the dog latches to and the trap works fine . No boiling no water and vinegar and no dog file ing .

The springs could be made from different steel, my Duke traps say Made In Vietnam. Don't know if that is a good or a bad thing.

No one says what the purpose of this is? Why not just use them as is?

I was wondering the same. I didn't do anything to mine.

Once they rust if not protected, triggers are not as sensitive and snaps are not as powerful as the the metal is not as "slick" when its rusted. As it snaps the metals from the spring has to slide against the clamps, the smoother and less friction it has to deal with the better and stronger it operates.

You can use any kind of paint though?

I know a lot of guy that just use cheap spray paint and get away with it. I have been trying to etch them and it seems to be working just as well. As long as you can keep them from rusting and can get the smell of whatever you are using off before you use them. I think you are in tip top shape.

What do you think about spraying them with flex seal?

Next paint job, I'll give that a try. Im sure it'll scrape off like cheap paint does. Thanks for the idea .
