Ancient and complex history, varied territory, surprising landscapes, important archaeological remains and fabulous beaches, quiet even in the busiest periods: the island of Rhodes, in Greece, is the largest and most important of the Dodecanese and is the perfect destination for everyone, from lovers of cultural itineraries to seekers of effervescent nightlife, from hunters of solitary coastlines to walkers in search of wooded valleys scented with aromatic herbs. Sometimes also called the “island of roses” or “island of hibiscus”, by virtue of the beauty of its fauna and its colors, Rhodes is a destination capable of opening up and giving its beauties to all travelers.
A fascinating mix of Byzantine, Turkish and Italian architecture built on much older and largely unidentifiable remains, the Old Town represents a world in itself. To the north stand the mighty stone houses, called ‘inns’, which delimit the straight streets of the Knights’ Quarter. These austere-looking buildings were built in the Middle Ages by the Knights of St. John to house knights from different countries.
To the south lies the so-called Turkish Quarter, a tangle of cobbled streets that is now the main shopping area, where shops and restaurants coexist alongside abandoned mosques and Muslim monuments.
The Jewish Quarter to the southeast, which lost most of its inhabitants during the Second World War, is now a quiet residential neighborhood. Of the nine gates that give access to the Old Town, the most used and most spectacular are the two located to the north towards the New Town. The Gate of Liberty leads to the main tourist areas, while the evocative Gate D'Amboise, towards the hinterland, allows you to reach the Palace of the Grand Master. Also in Old Rhodes, the Archaeological Museum is definitely worth a visit.
