    When I commuted to work in Toronto in 1979, my train took me through the CP Agincourt Yard. As I looked out the window I saw gondolas laden with the burned-out tank cars from the Mississauga Train Disaster. Cheery start to the work week

    The two Locomotives with three-digit road numbers are 'slugs'...these are locomotives with no diesel plant on-board. They get their electricity from the locomotives that they are coupled to...they have traction motors...just no diesel and no alternator.

    • @Heroduothecomedian
      @Heroduothecomedian 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      so there are full body slugs on the railroad? the only slugs i seen are the ones that just look like the top half of the diesel locomotive was cut clean off lol

      Derek Edmondson cool

    • @steven2k7
      @steven2k7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Then why does it have a giant fuel tank on it like every other locomotive?

    • @burdizdawurd1516Official
      @burdizdawurd1516Official 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Derek Edmondson even more interesting is the reasoning behind slugs; that under low speeds the locomotive produces excess power. This could lead to wheelslip, but the extra motors add an outlet thus providing a higher starting tractive effort.

    • @vex8836
      @vex8836 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Collateralcoffee kind of a stupid response. It can be heartbreaking because there are people who care enough for these engines and enjoy seeing them on the railroad at work not torn up and destroyed. For some it's the same way watching a train quietly rust away.

    Looks like the fire turned one UP loco into a NS, and was beginning to turn an NS locomotive into a UP, based on the colors.

    • @wfkane2005
      @wfkane2005  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Blaine Bugaski Indeed, that 1 UP was quite burned up, but was recently released after a rebuild program I believe in Altoona.

  • @TheDodgeboi
    @TheDodgeboi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Are these engines rebuildable? I've been told that as long as the frame is straight and not broken or cracked it is a candidate for rebuilding.

    • @zackbobby5550
      @zackbobby5550 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They could rebuild them, but the UP in particular has tons of locomotives just sitting out in the desert waiting to be used. They'll probably charge NS for the damages, pocket the money as profit, and grab another motor from the pile to replace it in service. They can also sell that damaged one as good quality scrap for even more money.

      Slugs are not commonly seen in some of the more flat areas but with some of the lines are running here in South Carolina it's not uncommon to see them running with slugs. And that is do to the fact that the terrain they're having operated and it's better to have the additional traction Motors to help break or to help accelerate.

      I ve never seen Slugs of any type operating as in train power out of Conway . They were strictly hump power ,they usually only go past east Conway far enough to tie on a track to shove ! The guys walking alongside the fire damaged units appear to be NS Conway engine house supervisors ,pretty sure .

      Both units were rebuilt. From what I can tell the NS unit was repaired at Juniata and the UP unit appears to have been worked on at GE Erie them sent to Jenks in Little Rock AR. I didn’t dig deeper to find out what work was performed at each shop.
      Almost all of the locomotives UP had in storage are gone, as of 3 weeks ago I didn’t see a single locomotive on the storage tracks just outside Tucson. I have not researched to see what happened to them, but I also have not seen the stored locomotives in service or being moved. Aliens got them maybe. Lol

    These locomotives were involved in a collision, likely with a semi truck, with the damage to the first locomotive.

    • @ralfie8801
      @ralfie8801 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No semi did that. More likely a sideswipe collision with another locomotive to rip the side out of her like that. I’ve worked on locomotives that hit a semi and they come out of it with way less damage than that unless it was a propane tanker.

    • @wfkane2005
      @wfkane2005  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      JT The Railfan I believe them to be SD40E's, the 3780 was the 3 rd unit in the consist. When they derailed the NS and leading UP unit here, they were reversed. The NS unit was the leading unit

    • @wfkane2005
      @wfkane2005  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheVARailFan I believe the crew had no life threatening injuries. NS on the other hand needed to investigate along with the NTSB how the crew had run a signal.
      As to the cell phone use, I have no knowledge of NS policy

    •  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +William - Bill Kane mechanical employees working within a shop facility can use them
      the railroad does provide cell phones to be used for business purposes

    • @wfkane2005
      @wfkane2005  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The crew on the cell phones was the local job switching the industrial spur.
      I have no way of knowing whether NS allows the practice
