This movie is absolutely iconic in the US. In fact it’s usually played back to back for 24 hours from December 24-25.
It didn’t really start off that way, but over the years it obtained cult status.
Some of the references might not make sense to people outside the US & Canada, but here we absolutely adore this movie.

RIP Melinda Dillon, the actress who played Ralphie and Randy's mother. We lost her earlier this year. She will be missed.
And, of course, RIP to the late, great Darren McGavin. Ralphie and Randy's father, probably better known as ace reporter Carl Kolchack in "Kolchack: The Night Stalker," the show that inspired "The X Files." He also acted in "The X Files," playing retired FBI Agent Arthur Dales, the agent who, fittingly, was Fox Mulder's mentor.

Every American kid born before 1975 heard their mother say, “you’ll shoot your eye out,” watched someone try to stick their tongue to a light pole, had his dirty mouth mouth washed out with soap for swearing, and dreamed of going blind to get back at his parents. That iconic stuff is why it’s still so popular in the U.S. today.

  • @romine777
    @romine777 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

In the Chinese restaurant, when the duck arrived at the table, the mother had a different script and wasn't aware of what was going to happen regarding the duck. Instead, she sold the moment without realizing it by turning to the father and saying, "I'm sorry!" before the waiter loped off the duck's head. Rather than reshoot or remove the scene, the director liked the response and kept it in the film.

I just met the cast of this movie last weekend at a meet-and-greet event. I hung out with Ralphie for a bit. Many don't know that he produced and acted in the first "Iron Man" movie! I also hung out with Yano Anaya (the short bully). He also played young Michael Anthony in the Van Halen music video "Hot for teacher". Another easter egg in this movie is a cameo by the author/narrator Jean Shepherd. He's the man at the Santa event that says "The line ends here, it begins there". That's the man narrating the entire movie. :)

Although exaggerated, many of Jean Shepherd's stories were based on real people and events. On his radio show in the sixties he said his little friends, Flick, Bruner, and Shwartz were not only real people but he didn't even change their names. Sadly Flick died in the war when his bomber was shot down over Italy.

Ovaltine was a chocolate flavored powder to mix into a glass of milk. It had vitamins and minerals, so it was like drinking a chocolate vitamin pill.

Leah, Vicki, Ellie, and Michelle sure do put me in the Christmas spirit. Unfortunately this movie puts tears and I do mean a gusher of tears in my eyes. The minute I heard the words air rifle, aka B*B gun I broke down. You see, I got a Red Ryder air rifle for Christmas around 1955. I was also an avid baseball and football card collector in my youth. I remember trading and gambling (using numbers on the back) cards with my friends. I amassed 2 shoe boxes of cards. My most precious cards (the ones I would never risk gambling) were Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, Jim Brown, Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, Frank Gifford, and Y.A. Tittle are all I can remember. After I got my BB gun all my cards became HISTORY. I don't even dare to think of what they would be worth today. 😢
I'll watch the movie in hopes that doing so with the Homies will ease my pain. I do think it's a great Christmas movie and I can reconcile myself with the fact that my mother preserved my comic book collection from the Golden Age of comics and my 1949 American Flyer and 1952 Lionel train set, otherwise they might have fallen to my gun.😊😊

When my dad was a kid, my grandfather took him and a friend to Ebbets Field to see an exhibition game of the Dodgers vs the Yankees. Players remained after the game to sign autographs, and my dad and his friend both had Mickey Mantle cards signed by the man himself. Somehow on the way home, his friend had lost his signed card and was grief-stricken. Grandpa told my dad to give his card to his friend, which he did. I'll bet he would still have that card today if he'd kept it.
Also, my dad's mother did throw out all of his comic books, which he is still bitter about today. 😆

Ralphie grew up to become an elf, just to give Will Ferrell a hard time at not making those etch a sketches fast enough, then demoting him to test scary jack in the boxes. And just like the drama queen Ralphie is, he revealed the secret to Will Ferrell being a human instead of an elf! Loved that cameo of Peter Billingsley in the movie Elf!

Poor Vicki was bored for most of the movie. Better luck next time
I'm impressed that everybody understood the movie so well. It is terribly American, and it's set in the 1940s, This confused many young Americans too when the movie was released in 1983. But I guess being a kid with operatic levels of emotion is universal. "When I die everybody will be so sad that they weren't nice to me when they had the chance", Yep Ellie, we all did that. And that the BB gun was "the best gift" that Ralphie would ever receive was just because of that feeling a kid has of wanting a thing so, so much and the magic of actually getting it.
Ovaltine is a powdered malt and sugar mix that you can add to milk to flavor and sweeten it. To sell more product they used to sponsor prize giveaways that required you to send in labels and such. Ralphie's prize from the Ovaltine company was a ring that spelled out "Drink your Ovaltine."

This movie was a flop in the theaters, but took off after it came out on VHS tape.
I read the book the movie was based on. All these things actually happened to the boy in the story, but they didn't all happen at the same Christmas season. For example, the dogs getting the dinner actually happened at Easter, and it was a ham.
