I was so taken aback, it's very rare that anime characters say terms like gay or lesbian, especially in the JP dub and it's often avoided being said as a whole due to the Japanese cultural stigma, hell, some BL and GL animes I've seen don't even say the word, it's like watching an obviously gay classmate of yours say homophobic shit from the inside of a glass see-through closet. So I really enjoy how they were so straightforward and pushed for more inclusiveness by making the characters have such a topic
It does. But the register is completely different. Japanese has its own words for the register used in the English translation so the translation is simply wrong. Even if you don't know much about langauges, surely you know about the basics of "polite word" VS "rude word", right? for example. "Come here." and "Could you come close to me, please?" They ultimately mean the same thing, but the register level is completely different. First one is casual, almost like a forceful command to come to you, which could be interpreted rudely. The second one is a polite request to come to you. They might mean the same thing but the level of formality is completely different. The words used in Japanese are scientific, and they have a formal serious conversation about life, not just some casual talk or babble. The word for "gay" in Japanese is ゲイ, but the anime uses 同性愛者, which means homosexual. @@OtepRalloma
@@danielantony1882Well the other part is that it's translated into English, and being gay is far more accepted here, so a non-serious word has similar power to a serious word.
I love how this scene actually confronts homophobia. Rae is terrified of feeling love for anyone as she’s worried they’ll leave. On top of that, you have Claire standing up for her to those homophobic assholes.
I was really shocked to find this topic being so openly discussed in a *YURI* anime, of all things. Most of the time, this stuff is completely ignored. Good on ya', writers.
She wants to be best friends trope, someone who loves a character but knows that they love someone else and thus will remain by their side forever. ❤ But its nice to see its the protagonists role this time vs the usual side character or other leads that cant get with protagonist ❤
Did not expect the series to go out of its way to be educational which is actually really cool! I haven’t seen the show yet but I was already bracing myself about how Claire and the maid character reacted because those jokes normally don’t get called out within the show. The silver haired girl did ask an invasive question though that could’ve been a forced outting if Rae wasn’t already comfortable with talking about her sexuality but it’s still nice to see a queer anime that’s actually respectful and informative!
See this is so interesting, because High Guardian Spice tried to do the same thing with trans people. But the way they did it was super awkward, whereas this is actually educational. Yet their methods were similar enough, so im wondering why HGS failed to address an LGBT topic where this anime is doing it so flawlessly. Is it genuinely just like, the vibe thats captured? I'm gay myself and from a writing perspective, it's really important to try to pin this down. I'd hate for an author to want to try to talk about LGBT people and fail because the vibe they captured wasn't right for the topic, but I myself am not talented enough as a writer to say what should or shouldn't be done. One little bit I DID appreciate, however, was how they made all the characters into aspects of the discussion, including the discrimination of "ooo i dont wanna sit nex to her", and then allowed the character who was in the wrong to realize the hypocrisy she had and learn from it. I felt like that was a very positive way of looking at learning how to be a kinder individual
I think the main difference is HGS treat the audience like a child when discussing the topic, literally explaining word for word the definition which make it felt forced and unnatural. The scene also kinda come out of nowhere suddenly without previous context Meanwhile this anime bring up the question more naturally by having the context that Rue is very obviously in love with Claire. And everyone already know the definition so the scene didn’t linger on the OG question too long and move on to discuss related topic like “does gender matter in love”
I love this story so much, its so rare for yuris to actually show the guy characters, much less actually talk about the lgbt community and the backlash they recieve just because the way they love is different.
I think this scene had some of the better inclusive dialogue for acceptance of a gay friend. Growing up I never understood why a couple of my friends were shocked I didn't care. If always respond with "nothing's going inside me, right? Let's get back to the game"! "

I really appreciate this scene, because honestly the characters discussed a real topic in such a lightweight and in a way that wasn't awkward or misleading this type of GL is nice because it shows that men can exists but women don't always find interest in them, rather than in some other GL where there aren't males at all which is unrealistic

I remember first seeing this scene, I knew absolutely nothing about the anime. I assumed Rae was a token lesbian side character and was impressed that she had so much depth, and I felt bad knowing that she probably would never have her feelings reciprocated by the main character. Rewatching it now, knowing that Rae is the protagonist and this is a Yuri anime, it feels so much more hopeful. I need to actually watch this anime
update: i watched the anime! its really good for like, the first 8 episodes. then it turns to shit. it spends the first arc setting up some cool world building and characters that could easily have very interesting arcs and interactions. It sets up themes of class inequality, what types of taboo love are okay, and some interesting political unrest within the kingdom as the church holds way too much power. Also theres a random foreign kingdom that seems to want to go to war or something, and by god that would be a great way to have all these lingering issues come crashing down and make for a hectic and amazing plot. then, the second arc starts and all of that goes straight out the window. its a generic romance anime with 0 depth, all character development is reset to 0, and Rae is the creepy lesbian with no respect for boundaries. She gets into a relationship with Claire and immediately starts embarrassing her by loudly and publicly professing her love, even when Claire asks her to stop. Like, if you really loved her so much, maybe you'd listen to her even a little bit? I dunno. Also: -there's like 2 times total that Rae's knowledge from her previous life actually helps her out after the first few episodes. I almost forgot I was watching an isekai. -the second arc ends with the most asspull logic ever. This anime follows every cliche in the book and refuses to change anything to make it more interesting, but then it won't even commit to the cliches either. Rae could have been like "I offer myself, because no worldly item can truly capture my love for you!" or something, but no, it was "actually the rarest item ever ISN'T the rarest item ever, because I have a secret RARER item because i did some off camera netherite mining" -im pretty sure they compared incest to lesbianism in the very end of the first arc and that was not cool??? like Rae had 0 issues with rhe brotherfucking, and was like "It sucks to be condemned by society for loving someone..." when incest is actually harmful and lesbianism is not. If you want to have incest in your anime, that's fine. It's not real, do what you want. But don't compare it to homosexuality, that's fucking weird. One is morally okay and one is morally very bad. Overall, this anime isn't worth watching, unless you just stop after the first arc.
Word of advice, if someone makes a serious discussion about how they feel and say "just kidding" take it with a good chunk of salt because what they might say is the truth, and the truth should never be made as a joke because someone might actually be hurting
I went into this thinking it had to be an edit, but as it went on I started thinking "Holy shit this is actually in an anime, they're actually straight up discussing non-straight things!" I never thought I'd see a scene where they actually address the "Gay = Predator" trope...
It's cool that they actually talked about being gay, but tbh I don't really like how they handled the romance between Claire and Rae. Their relationship is entertaining to watch and I know they end up married with kids in the light novel, but I'm just not into watching a lesbian being super thirsty for a girl who says she's straight and even has feelings for a guy.
It's a lot easier to understand when you read the "She's So Cheeky for a Commoner" spinoff that's written from Claire's POV. And as she even states in this clip, she plays the part of the "thirsty lesbian" for laughs. The LNs go a bit more in depth about her feelings in this scene, specifically bringing up how LGBT comedians in Japan often make their sexuality part of their gag/joke to play it off. It's somewhat of a self defense mechanism, and that's what is going on here.
Love itself can take on many different forms. How we express that love is unique even to how we love. I like that the topic goes into not just that there is a physical attraction as with love but different motivation or desires that form the basis of one’s love. I am the type, myself, that comes off as a flirt or romantic. In actuality, I am just the type that likes to do nice things to people I am close with. ……. This has caused misunderstanding on a few cases
I love how they handled this in such a mature fashion. I'm immensely glad this scene exists. Quite possibly the best portrayal of LGBT people I have ever seen in 20+ years of anime addiction! (Yes, I am old)
Am I the only one who thinks it would be strange to have a character say they’re gay and always will be and have that reaffirmed then have a character say they’re straight and then just change their mind? Then again I haven’t watched the show yet so I might be missing some subtext.
The thing is that both sexualities aren't treated the same. Being heterosexual is the "default" in our society so from early on kids are being taught the concept of relationships being "man + woman". Some gay people realize their attraction towards the same gender earlier than others, who need time to acknowledge that the "default" doesn't apply to them. So basically heterosexual is treated as "this is what everyone is at the start" and gay is "this is what you can become", which is why there is so much fearmongering about children being "turned" gay
Sometimes I forget that things exist for the characters to understand because when I first saw this scene I was like “Rae is gay? NO DUH ITS NOT LIKE SHE SPENDS THE PREVIOUS EPISODES TALKING ABOUT HOW OBSESSED SHE IS WITH CLAIRE!”
This scene was delightful in the manga, but the anime really did it justice as well. The story in general was handled extremely tastefully up until what happens a little later (chapter 22 of the manga, i think) where the author dropped the ball so unfathomably hard i ended up dropping the manga entirely for over a year, before finally giving it a chance after that arc. It never let me look at the story or the characters the same again, though. It's almost as if something changed in the author's mind at the beginning of that arc, and they never quite recovered the finesse they had leading up to that point. This section here is by far the best of this story.
This goes beyond things like this. Japan has a bit of a taboo when it comes to sexuality discussions, preferring you to keep it private, so not a lot of people over there likely fully understanding everything about gay. Usually their media has gay people just acceted or played uncomfortably for laughs, which this seemed to be going towards the latter for a while, so the fact they went for a rralistic approach kinda speaks volumes to more than just the typical homophobia thing but also how its just kinda frowned upon discussing it over there and how just because one is open anout it doesn’tmake them some sexual deviant with no characteristics past it. Atleast thats what im getting from this...
I find it interesting that japan explains lgbt far better and in a more accepting way without belittling anyone than in the west. It even did a great job with aot bc if that was made in america they would have a went on a rant about sasha not knowing about people being able to have darker skin.
It would be such a cool dialogue about how it's bad to be judgemental and expect harassment from queer people just because they might be attracted to you, IF Rae wasn't already attracted to Claire and being creepy with her
What I like from this scene is they explained with calm and respect. Maybe because it's anime so everything are perfect. But compared to how american lgbt community present themselves, you will understand why their LGBT community has a bad name. They want an equality and respect but at the same time they think they're better and hollier than straigh people. They forced public to acknowledge them by threat: if you're not represent us, your cancelled. That's why some movie and comic has forced LGBT theme or character just because. Superman son are gay, robin are gay, damian are bi, bat girl are gay suddenly almost all comic characters are lgbt. Compared to that, Anime and manga repsented lgbt as....normal or casual
It's the difference between a genuine queer story written by a queer person adapted into an anime because people liked the novel, and huge corporations queerbaiting on shows and movies with no substance because the money is in progressivism in America. I'm In Love With The Villainess won't edit out it's queerness for Chinese and Russian audiences, it literally can't.
It's actually really cool to see a scene like this show up in anime. Especially since, and people are going to probably hate me for saying this, Japan isn't very welcoming towards LGBT individuals IRL. Granted, Japan's government aren't as bad as certain other places where violence and discrimination against LGBT is outright encouraged but a lot of people who are openly gay, bi or trans have less rights and face discrimination regularly with little protection from the law. And while characters or subject matter relating to those things is fairly present in their media, especially in anime and manga, but in reality Japan has highly conservative views on that subject. Japan in of itself is a highly conservative one and has been for literally decades. So changes have to be made gradually and slowly. So for there to be a scene like this in an anime where it takes a look at what it's like to be LGBT and actually explain it along with the problems they face in a sincere, straight-to-the-point manner is fascinating even for someone like me who is a cis and straight but has good friends who are LGBT.
pretending.... it was a painful movement over your bonding with someone you love... the way you hiding your feeling only hurting you... and taking out your feeling so sudden, were also hurting you...
ok to be fair claire has every reason to think rae is out for her. imagine berating a commoner to have said commoner suddenly profess her love for you, openly admits to loving you bully her, and constantly never leaving you alone. (adding the fact that later rae is really creepy watching claire in the bathhouse) if i were claire id think this girl was going to kidnap me one day and never let me see the light of day again
Most animes tend to indulge in yuri shenanigans, but it's the first time I've seen it not being just a trope, but also a real character trait. See, this is how you properly introduce gay into the media. Use it as *one* well writen character trait instead of it being the character's *only* trait.
Well a trope is an unwritten standard/method of any literature, nothing is wrong about it until you overuse it (ofc I mean a single author doing it over and over and not different authors applying it sparingly) . Old/classic Yuri series tend to be more serious and topics about the human psyche. It's just that this trope came from actual actions of many gay people who do this for comedy and or just straight up hitting on people. I've been hit on many times before and usually smile back , and walk away I'm not into crowdy places and small talk and my relative uncles whose gay use their gayness to be comedic , he's fun at parties
This scene plays like an internet conversation. It was awkward in the manga too. Either the author wasnt confident that readers would pick up on the romance or he couldnt help himself using his manga to vent a few frustrations.
My f*cking heart...... Jesus Christ,I felt her statement about herself, it hurts, a fuck ton, you can only smile to just not think of it, my god...wow, this is the first time I've seen this in anime wow
There's good, relatable LGBT representation that actually makes people feel understood and then there's the blatant and forced "Let's make everyone gay!" approach that makes it feel like a pandering arms race. This scene is the former and I love it for that
Actually when I first saw the trailer, I immediately knew it was a Yuri anime, I guess the guy who posted this thought it was a regular cute girls anime 😂😂😂

So I really enjoy how they were so straightforward and pushed for more inclusiveness by making the characters have such a topic
The first line goes so hard in the Dub, it's way funnier to hear it than just read it
anyway, great scene
It's not supposed to be though. The register level is completely wrong. Claire actually says homosexual, not gay.
claire isn't the one saying the line but ok@@danielantony1882
@@danielantony1882 the word literally means the same thing though
It does. But the register is completely different. Japanese has its own words for the register used in the English translation so the translation is simply wrong. Even if you don't know much about langauges, surely you know about the basics of "polite word" VS "rude word", right?
for example.
"Come here." and "Could you come close to me, please?"
They ultimately mean the same thing, but the register level is completely different.
@@danielantony1882Well the other part is that it's translated into English, and being gay is far more accepted here, so a non-serious word has similar power to a serious word.
this is so refreshing to me
I love how this scene actually confronts homophobia. Rae is terrified of feeling love for anyone as she’s worried they’ll leave. On top of that, you have Claire standing up for her to those homophobic assholes.
She is standing up because she feels guilty that she was just as bad as them. Despite all her flaws Claire is a maiden of honour.
I was really shocked to find this topic being so openly discussed in a *YURI* anime, of all things. Most of the time, this stuff is completely ignored. Good on ya', writers.

@rickking228 maybe, don’t know it
Did not expect the series to go out of its way to be educational which is actually really cool!
5:05 that look she gave just screamed "you aren't, are you? cause i can certainly arrange that"
See this is so interesting, because High Guardian Spice tried to do the same thing with trans people.
The scene also kinda come out of nowhere suddenly without previous context
Meanwhile this anime bring up the question more naturally by having the context that Rue is very obviously in love with Claire. And everyone already know the definition so the scene didn’t linger on the OG question too long and move on to discuss related topic like “does gender matter in love”
HGS was also shit tbh
The biggest difference between this and hgs is that hgs is a shit show put together by talentless hacks
No HRT potion, for starters.
Its because it was written by hack writers not really interested in a good story. This wasnt.

Let's all really appreciate how this anime clearly took a stance to defend LGBT peoples and it's really appreciable.
Props to you, this video got me into the fandom. Now it’s one of my favorite Yuri series.
I dunno.
Also:
-there's like 2 times total that Rae's knowledge from her previous life actually helps her out after the first few episodes. I almost forgot I was watching an isekai.
-the second arc ends with the most asspull logic ever. This anime follows every cliche in the book and refuses to change anything to make it more interesting, but then it won't even commit to the cliches either. Rae could have been like "I offer myself, because no worldly item can truly capture my love for you!" or something, but no, it was "actually the rarest item ever ISN'T the rarest item ever, because I have a secret RARER item because i did some off camera netherite mining"
-im pretty sure they compared incest to lesbianism in the very end of the first arc and that was not cool??? like Rae had 0 issues with rhe brotherfucking, and was like "It sucks to be condemned by society for loving someone..." when incest is actually harmful and lesbianism is not. If you want to have incest in your anime, that's fine. It's not real, do what you want. But don't compare it to homosexuality, that's fucking weird. One is morally okay and one is morally very bad.
Overall, this anime isn't worth watching, unless you just stop after the first arc.
this is a whole essay sorry.
TL;DR the first arc was good, until the end of it. the second arc ruined the whole thing. dont recommend watching
Fun fact: This was written by a woman.

Yo, a scene talking about sexuality that's actually driven by character writing instead of a psa? Incredible.
in Brazilian portuguese Misha's question for Rae was literally "so, Rae, are you what they call homosexual?"
She did kind of ave a reason to be uncomfortable when the girl who has been sexually harrasing her comes out.
This might be the clumsiest dialogue I've ever seen
Word of advice, if someone makes a serious discussion about how they feel and say "just kidding" take it with a good chunk of salt because what they might say is the truth, and the truth should never be made as a joke because someone might actually be hurting
Welp.
Better to talk and learn than decide everything on your own.
Everyone's different.
I went into this thinking it had to be an edit, but as it went on I started thinking "Holy shit this is actually in an anime, they're actually straight up discussing non-straight things!"
I never thought I'd see a scene where they actually address the "Gay = Predator" trope...
So cute, most relationships like her don't work well. Can't wait to see
Rea is about as respectful as this type of character can get.
Damn I've never actually heard an anime say gay or straight or anything
It's cool that they actually talked about being gay, but tbh I don't really like how they handled the romance between Claire and Rae. Their relationship is entertaining to watch and I know they end up married with kids in the light novel, but I'm just not into watching a lesbian being super thirsty for a girl who says she's straight and even has feelings for a guy.
It goes better after Manaria's arc since the novel has an actual plot that isn't romcom
@@rudolphna54 To be honest a lot of Asian homosexual comedians used their own sexuality as a part their gag and I've gotten used to them
Love itself can take on many different forms.

The term "ally" gets tossed around a lot.
Good teammates are hard to come by.

Most animes tend to indulge in yuri shenanigans, but it's the first time I've seen it not being just a trope, but also a real character trait.
See, this is how you properly introduce gay into the media.
Use it as *one* well writen character trait instead of it being the character's *only* trait.
This year alone has magical Revolution already.
