I’m about to attempt to remove the rack on my B7 3.0 tdi. This is a great video for research on how to do it, thanks for making it.
Thanks Brother! Good luck on your repair - if you got a buddy or helper you can use, it makes it alot easier!
Great video. Thanks for sharing knowledge & tricks that you have. Helps me out a lot to easy starting
So happy to hear you found it useful. Thank you for the comment!

Hopfully i dont need to do mine
Good job
Hey - thanks for the comment! Yeah, its not an easy job in the fact that there are a lot of tight spaces to squeeze things in and out of. Good luck with yours and hope you don't have to pull the rack either!
Great video! I noticed power steering fluid leaking off the inner tie rod boot on “lil red”, and I am thinking I may have to do this myself soon.
Thanks for watching. Hope you dont have to end up pulling the rack. Are you sure its PS fluid?
@@beerwrenchgarage Fairly certain. Going to keep an eye on my fluid levels before I pull the trigger. I will already be in there soon though when I do the drivetrain swap, so may go ahead and replace anyway.
I was replacing my old rack when I realized it isn’t servotronic, but the new one I bought is. Is there a way to make the servotronic rack work in a non-servotronic car
Im not sure. I would imagine it would mechanically function, but Im not sure it would work correctly. Just to be safe, I would go with the correct model. Good luck!
Good day. I have a 2006 Audi A6 4f, V8, BAT engine. I found out the car has servotronic steering the OEM number is 4F1 422 053B. I'm looking for this part and just can't find it. Is it possible to replace it with another part that also has the electrical connector for the steering and has a different marking than 4F1 422 05 B or does it just have to be the same? thank you for the advice
Petr - thanks for watching and thanks for the question. To my knowledge the steering racks are specific to the chassis. For example, you have a C6 Audi A6 (I believe C6 is from 2006-11). You will have to get a rack from another C6 A6. I have no idea if there is interchange between models. I would try auto dismantlers and wrecking yards in the area where you live. The A6 is common enough that there should be plenty around. Im pretty sure the rack from any same year A6 will bolt in, not sure if the serve is interchangeable between models - since you have the V8. Sorry - I wish I had more info for you - good luck!
Is it a big job to replace the rack and pinion ?
It is a difficult job - because of the placement of some of the bolts for the fluid lines, and to actually route the rack out of the car. Its a fairly difficult job, but one that can be accomplished with some patience and determination.
Did u have to re program the new rack after install?
No, in my case, I did not. If I recall, the replacement rack was an exact duplicate of the one we were pulling out. Im sure the Volkswagen/Audi software has a parameter that CAN be programmed for a new rack, but in this case it wasnt necessary.
I ended up getting a rack for my 05 s4 but it is reman do u think I’ll need it reintialized
@@bxh7131 I don't think you will. My sense is that you will be able to plug it in and go without needed any programming. But if you end up needed to do any type of programming for the rack, find a reputable Euro independent shop in your area and they should be able to do it for an hour's worth of labor. Let me know how it turns out.
I have a similar problem with mine. As soon as a start steering it does a scraping noise and it becomes really stiff. The hydrolic fluid was blubbling and foaming. After some trouble shooting i noticed that the steering rack was leaking. Is it as easy as just to replace the steering rack or should i do more trouble shooting?
Do more trouble shooting so you know 100% if it’s the rack. The rack is a bitch and a half to replace and you will likely need a second set of hands. Try to pinpoint why it’s leaking.

My A4 B7 TFSI Special Edition Quattro is in for new OEM rack, £2,200 😢
That’s a lot of quid! But for an OEM rack that actually seems pretty reasonable. You sound like you take good care of your car, I bet it’s a sharp ride! Thanks for watching!
