My biggest issue with GPSs mounted like that is not the GPS itself but the magnetometer. I have been moving the GPS opposite to the battery cables to help with this issue. Another pet peeve of mine is that those small GPSs with magnetometers don't show where it should be pointing, you have to search for the information or look at the magnetometer chip itself to figure it out.
See my video on compass alignment. It isn't too tricky if you follow the process. Most of the popular GPS and Compass units have the default orientation now so work with the defaults... Happy flying
Thanks for the tips! I have a question specifically for fixed wing foam planes and GPS. Do you think that foam is blocking the GPS signal or make it work sub optimally? That said, is it ok to put the GPS in the battery bay of a foam fixed wing plane? Cheers!
Thanks for this helpful and comprehensive video - it was just what I was looking for. Alas - no solution to my problem, here: I've got an existing quad (a SpeedyBee Bee35) that has been fully functional with BetaFlight - which rules out a lot of the potential problems (e.g. Tx/Rx roll, etc). As shown in the video, I've got the Ports tab configured, GPS enabled in the Configuration tab, and see messages steadily incrementing in the GPS tab. However - never mind a 3D fix - I never see even a SINGLE satellite (continuous Sats: 0) in INAV, even when the quad is outside with a clear view of the sky. Alas, the stack I'm using (SpeedyBee F7 Mini) doesn't have a 4v5 pad which powers the GPS when connected via USB - so I need to attach a pack to power up the GPS (as confirmed by the blue GPS icon at the top of INAV) - which, as you note, ALSO powers up by DJI O3 VTX. What's curious is: This identical build (no changes whatsoever) gets a fix fairly quickly when the FC is running BetaFlight. Is there any additional diagnostics / debugging that can be done? Thanks again for the on-point video - I'm sure eager to have my first flight(s) in INAV #LotsToLearn
Great tips. I have a new Flywoo Goku GM10 Pro V3 on a new plane build. Everything is showing blue in inav, I am getting increasing messages and 18 satellites, and yet, after 18 minutes still not getting a lock. Do you have any additional recommendations that might cause this delay? I have tried this woth my VTX on and off. When plugged into the computer, inav shows exactly where I am.
Hi i have a question about the gps if there is no arrow on it what way do you install it do the wires go to the back of the plane or the head of the plane
Write the specs and wiring diagram on a small paper to foldup and bag with your parts you keep .parts like gps , buc converters voltage regulators , camera switches, rx , buzzers , vtx's
Covered in the release notes... Currently, if you wish to fly a multirotor without a compass. You will need to enable a compass (fake is ok) to change navigational modes in Configurator. You should disable the compass after making the changes. This has been fixed for a future release.
Ive got a quad /gps that works fine in BF but when i converted it over to iNav it doesnt read the gps at all. I even loaded BF back on and it still works in BF but no go with iNav. Yes I have the uart set the same as BF and I do have GPS enabled in the Configuration tab. Any suggestions?
You don't mention the GPS type... INAV stopped supporting NMEA compass protocol recently so you'll have to check the one you have supports GNSS... Happy flying
While I have my quad connected to my computer It locks on the sats and shows on the map my location. Only problem I have ,No sats are showing in my DJI goggles It flashes a red sat ,but no sats like in betaflight. What is the reason this could be happening. Cheers
@@Painless360 I have never come across anything like this I have everything I want in the goggles after the hack, there' is nothing I can think of why it'ss doing this I could understand if rx and tx were wired incorrectly but there not as I get all the sats locked in while on betaflight It's just not showing the sats in the goggles. That's why I asked if anything comes to mind?
It could be a few things, sats not locking when DJI unit is powered due to interference, font file issues on the goggles, something wrong in the setup in INAV... Best of luck
i had the same problem 99.99 m and no errors but the gps appeared blue so i found this video and after watching it i still had no idea what to do, connections were correct so i went outside (im right next to a window so i thought no way this will make a difference) and sat there confused for 3 minutes and suddenly it just worked 😅
I have an odd issue. HGLRC M100 was working just fine as recently as yesterday... then suddenly not picking up sats today. Blue icon in iNav, picking up messages, no errors but no sats. Running a SpeedyBee Wing App. Swapped out the GPS with one working just fine on another model, no luck. Changed the leads to the flight controller, no luck. Tried reflashing FC (7.1.2), nothing. Everything else working just fine. Any ideas gratefully received, my next step is a new FC but I'd rather not!

Fantastic tips, Lee! Thanks a bunch! 😃
Very helpful!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

@@Painless360 is it need to face the NORTH before calibrating the compass? or not necessary?

I've mounted a GPS under thin layers of foam, tape and plastic and not noticed any loss of performance.. Happy flying!

I'd unplug the DJI unit and see if that helps... best of luck
My Inav waits 7 sats to let me arm. Is there a way to set minimum of sats to 5 or even 3?
gps_min_sats
But I would strongly advise you to use a better GPS not reduce the number of sats needed... Happy flying
@@Painless360 Thanks! I think 5 sats is enough. But the reason is in my area to lock 7 sats takes a lot of time. It's really annoying...
I'd switch to an M10 based GPS and enable all the different GPS systems.. It should help a lot... Best of luck

Turn off your FPV gear as covered in the video. And then see if it locks. Most likely interference... Happy flying
Hi i have a question about the gps if there is no arrow on it what way do you install it do the wires go to the back of the plane or the head of the plane
It depends on the GPS model. It's pretty easy to get the orientation through a little trial and error in Configurator if you're not sure....

I configured mine with gps and compass but since i heard in 7.1 you can use only gps, I unselected the compass and that took away the Nav modes.
How do I set the GPS only for nav modes

I have already seen GPS mounted upside down with the antenna facing the ground!😀
Not seen that here, yet. Hopefully, those following my builds on this channel are seeing how it is done.... Happy flying
