    I read the book and watched the original version only several years back, so I daresay I'm pretty free of nostalgia. I liked the 80s version, but the new one is just on a whole new level. I loved that they placed more focus on Toranaga and the political intrigue rather than Blackthorne and his love story. A white man going native in a foreign culture by falling in love with a local woman is something we've seen a thousand times. A cornered warlord using a stranded european as a catalyst for his own rise to power is much more interesting to me.

    For those who remember the pivotal romance story between Blackthorne and Mariko in the original which developed fairly early on, Blackthorne and Mariko's relationship seems barely platonic in the new version and they don't open up with their feelings for each other until right before the night Mariko dies. Not sure how it's portrayed in the original novel but the romance takes too long to start going in the 2024 series.
    The character of Vasco Rodriguez (well-played by John Rhys-Davies) is an important character in the original tv series as is captain Ferreira. They both disappear in the final episodes of the 2024 series and there is no conclusion to their fates.
    The narrator in the original tv series was none other than Orson Welles. Yes, *the* Orson Welles.
    Blackthorne meeting the crew of the Erasmus in Edo and being utterly disgusted by their lack of manners, brutish and uncultured habits is an important part of the novel for it conveys that Blackthorne has become used to and respectful of Japanese culture and habits. In the 1980 mini-series Blackthorne barely can conceal his disgust and as he leaves he feels dirty. In the 2024 version he knocks out his former crew member and just leaves. I feel this could have been included like it was in the novel.

    Just watched both versions loved em both. Each iterations their ups and downs. I’m reading the novel now for more details and the 1980s version is closer to the source material. I just wish they added the translations like what they have on the book and that’s where the 2024 shogun shines with added modern muscle and more character perspectives like the book not just Blackthorne’s. I wonder if the Season 2 for 2024’s version would expand upon the book’s story or will they connect Clavell’s other books like Gai-Jin? Because the show ended the same way the 1980s version ended. Rumor has it that a version of Yasuke will also be washed ashore the great land of the rising sun and seeing as Toranaga is so close to Nobunaga in both charisma and cunning (plus it is Hiroyuki Sanada’s inspiration for the character) it’s possible that he too will be another retainer for him. All that’s missing now is a version of Jules Brunet, the French samurai and the trinity of Gaijin Samurais will be in one epic show.

    I like both versions, saw the 1980 series in highschool back in the mid 2000s and loved it enough to watch it again ten years later in the 2010s. The new version is it's perfect counter and it's frankly shocking how different but complimentary they are. The new one has more warts, but stronger strengths, the old one is a lot more relaxing with that 70 TV kino dialled in perfectly.
    TLDR; Watch both, they are both great and it's amazing how good the 2024 shogun is without eclipsing the original. Infact viewership is likely going up for the OG because of it.

    While I won’t deny that this was beautifully shot and the actors did a go job I will say this was a very dark version. Many of the character interactions and relationships were stripped from the story. The palate was very dark. They did not do as good a job showing how Toranaga and blackthorn grew to respect and actually like each other. If Toranaga had not told Yabu that he liked Blackthorn you would not have got it from what the show presented. I liked it but did not love it. It was just kind of a letdown for me overall.

      Toranaga in 2024 came out as a total mass murderer of everyone around him, just focusing on becoming Shogun by sacrificing everyone... in the 1980 version I had a much better feeling of how Mifune portrayed Toranaga

    • @richardruff8712

      Yes, you are totally correct... I read the book in the 1970's, and saw the 1980 version, with Chamberlain, etc... IMO the 1980 version was reasonably close to the book story, and well worth watching... But I also agree that this 2024 version seems much darker, and they seem to have cut out a lot of the story, yet have included other scenes, which were NOT in the book... ( e.g. the 2 girls fighting, and the Cannons being test fired )... Still not sure WHY a new version was made, also IMO the only improvement in this new production, is the performance of the young lady, Moeka Hoshi, as the very cute Fujiko...

    I felt like old man Blackthorn was unnecessary and actually detracts from the episode. We see him clutching the cross necklace, but later in the episode we see him throw it into the sea. I recognize that it could easily be a new cross, but it really shouldn't have even been filmed for the episode. I'm not interested in being "assured" that he eventually lives happily ever after and has a family and grandchildren. It's entirely unnecessary and the episode should have not even had it in the first place. 10 out of 10 for that final episode if I pretend like old man Blackthorn wasn't actually a thing.

    • @TrickityHouses
      @TrickityHouses 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Confirmed by writers that it was John's vision of a potential future he wanted. On a rewatch you can almost see him look over the shoulder to see "himself" but in the end he had to let that version of himself go. That's why it's was the same cross he tossed to symbolize letting go.

    • @DonDiego1973
      @DonDiego1973 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Exactly what TrickityHouses said. The episode was called A Dream Of A Dream, and old man Blackthorne was put in there very deliberately to first mislead the viewer, but then make the letting go on the boat more poignant.

      1980 version
      2024 version feels more like they tried to reorganize the important scenes from the 1980 version by moving them to different episodes and skipping some important characters totally

    • @easternlights3155
      @easternlights3155 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Both are pretty far removed from the book. 1980s made Blackthorne a much more central character, made the story about him and his romance with Mariko, rather than Toranaga's rise to power.
      2024 changed a lot of cultural stuff to be more accurate, as well as putting more focus on Toranaga, Mariko and Ochiba.
      1980s version is closer to the book story-wise, but the 2024 version does a much better job at replicating the tone.

  • @future_teknokrat7585
    @future_teknokrat7585 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    107? The entire thing is different except for the names lol. Even how the story is delivered and told, the tone so so serious and outwardly political. The actors who played Rodrigo and Alvito, respectively, should jave swapped roles. If the 2024 version can keep the realistic scenery but add the colorful performances, it would be just as enjoyable as the 1980 version. I like 2024 Shogun, but I feel you have to be brand new to the story in order to love it.

Still I think the dark and serious tone make sense for the 2024 given the fact it is literally set during the Sengoku Period which means warring states where clans battle each other for domination and expanding their own fiefdom. Ultimately it was bloody time period in Japanese History?

    The 1980 version centered on Blackthorn, and everyone else just showed up to help tell his part of the story. The current version is about Toranaga's story. Blackthorn, and even Mariko, are clearly secondary characters. Yabushigi even seems more important to this story, and Alvito and the Jesuits are an afterthought at best. And that's NOT a criticism. Both versions are a good ride.

  • @forddon
    @forddon 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    The original miniseries followed the book to the letter, because they made the artistic decision to not use subtitles much of the Japanese side of the story was left out, arguably the more interesting parts of the book. The new series in trying to focus on the Japanese story manages to dumb down every major event and round off all the nuance. The look of the new show which people keep calling "gritty and real" screams low budget. Filming the entire show in British Columbia must have been a lot cheaper than going to Japan, but don't try to pretend the continuous rainfall adds realism. Scenes were filmed in Anjiro that weren't supposed to be in Anjiro, scenes were filmed in forest that should have been in towns, the number of extras on set was a small fraction of what should have been there, some scenes were moved indoors to reduce the need for extras. Other scenes were eliminated to avoid cost, wide angle shots were all gloomy CGI Most of the characters only wore one change of clothes the entire run. The entire time line was compressed by about a factor of three resulting in some implausible plot holes.
    The book deviated from history in that they made Toranaga into an underdog painting him into a corner and making his cause seem hopeless, otherwise there would have been no dramatic tension, no cause for betrayal. but this Toranaga is just pathetic, in the end with no-one to talk to except Yabu's corpse. This thing started with a lot of promise but really fizzled out in the end.
