- From today, the ABC updated their news look and brought back the iconic news theme which debuted in 1986...although rearranged.
With Jeremy Fernandez. Recorded off ABC HD NSW on Monday the 19th of August 2024.

The beeping at the start is morse code for 'abc'. Nice touch.
I actually love how detailed the graphics is. If you look closely between 0:19 and 0:24, you can see that the time syncs to the actual time of different Australian time zones. This is also noticeable on ABC News Mornings and ABC News at Noon.
Dang! I don't even notice that, that's amazing.
@@KanzakiYuya It's pretty much BBC News 1998-2002. they did a ton of this
Yeah love how they used the old late 80 and 90s theme
I can't believe the old ABC news theme is back!
Semi-old. It's the 1980s theme not the 1950s theme
@@whophd the 1950s theme is still on radio especially Triple J?
@@kfedfan1314 yep, except the Triple J version includes a sample of the NWA song Express Yourself.
That looks and sounds amazing! Went all in on the fanfare!
Very good. Nothing like bringing back the brass!
a slight offhand but i've noticed long that the 2010-2024 abc themes had a similar motif to the sbs world news theme since the 1990s
maybe that had something to do with it
What an awesome rebrand.
I watched the Melbourne version with Tamara Oudyn, definitely brought back the 1990s nostalgia. Read about the track rearranging by David McDonald, gotta say I think he did a great job to not tinker with the original too much
Absolutely loving this theme’s return!
I miss the old theme this feels like a news channel from a movie or smth. Vibe of the old one felt more serious and news like.
I don't normally watch ABC News but the graphics look great and the theme music is great too!!
I'm calling this 2024 "Cornflour Curves".
2017: Very Vertical
2010: Blue-2-4
2005: Wide Orange
I think the 1987 theme was awesome but not enough has been done to bring it up to date for 2024. A bit more intensity and a crescendo, somewhat like the BBC News theme, would have done wonders. And the little flute spelling out ABC in morse code is a cool feature that should be more audible throughout the track. They've got the right idea, but just needed to go less conservative.
Much better than the old one.
As a kid growing up in the 90s, I do remember this theme, especially after the kids' cartoons in the late afternoon , early evening. The theme song is still dated no matter how much you increase the bass. I probably recommend replacing the trumpet with a more subtle instrument. Brass instruments in the 80s were used extensively and over the top. Nevetherless, bring back the nostalgia 😊.
One of the finest beats ever produced. Absolute face melter.
Looks and sounds about 50 years old already. The previous theme and graphics were top notch
It literally is 50 years old already
i dont like the trumpet sound. It sounds so 1980s as if australia was still a country town... I prefer the 1990-1992 version sound it just sounds way better and more cooler in stereo... Also BRING BACK the LOGO theme style look for it all these abc tv theme LOGOS before the programe next starts... the large ABC logo with backgrounds that shows a mix of sea and land and other times showing a mix of mountains of australia with towns.. if anyone remembers if from 1990-1992 more like 1991-92 version. Would be so way better. I dont like the boring plain just blue with basic words on it. Bring more a graphical like the 90s rather then going back as if this was 1981.. might as well NOW bring the round analogue CLOCK and display it for our audience....... so we can see what time it is right ?
Welcome back, old friend.
Watching from Hong Kong...
I think it's better to have the instrument parts re-recorded like what David Lowe did for "King Arthur" with BBC's Election 24 - the closing theme is like a simple fade into the old theme
In terms of graphics:
First, I thought there would be regional variants at least (maybe it's Sydney/national feed so there isn't), and it's a pity that the treats of 2017 titles, which are constantly updated with the images of the news have been taken away
Second, the designers seemed inconsistent in the use of round and square corners, in addition to the blue space issue raised by @luminism
The Sydney version still uses as a Background to the presenter of a photo of Circular Quay the is possibly decades old? How does this sit with the new look?
Oh I love itttttyyt
I love this. Sorry, but it's fantastic. They've done a great job. All the complaints seem to be pure minutiae from people who wouldn't watch the ABC anyway.
The new graphics are excellent, no longer boring black garbage and the theme suits it.
This is supposed to be one of the top news programmes in Australia and this is a great step in the right direction making it so.
I think that is a bit harsh. The complaints here are very well explained and put across and have some merit. I think you've got a bit of internal bias going on here.
@@MarkPentler I don’t work for the ABC and haven’t been affiliated with the ABC ever. I work in the commercial radio industry.
Although I am certain I have a nostalgia bias having grown up with this. I’ll freely admit that.
There’s been some extra comments added that do make more valid points. I’d only gone through a couple that seemed rather picky and just about nothing. There are others that make good points though.
I do much prefer this over the black theme however. The black theme was boring and felt very cold, even too cold for a news programme.
not a moment too soon
I thought the theme that replaced this back in 2005 sounded too similar to the SBS World News Theme.
Ugh, can you hear the ugly blend from the end of the vamp, leading into the closing notes? This theme is from the 1980s and wasn't designed for flexible headlines.
Wasn't paced the best for sure, if done properly it would have sounded better. Otherwise it sounds excellent.
absolutely bang-on assessment
I wanted to like this so badly, but it missed the mark by a mile. I think so many people were ready for the old fanfare to make a comeback but the remix is shockingly disjointed and doesn't have the gravitas for a modern take, the visuals (even though it does look good) is not as strong and authoritative as the one it replaces, and this overall identity just feels like it was incredibly rushed and incoherent, considering the 2017 branding was one of ABC's best. I hope they take this to the revision board ASAP, and honestly they probably should revert to the 2017 one until they get it right.
That theme sounds jarring at times, probably due to mixing the original one with modern additions. I think they should have re-done it entirely :/
However the graphics are fine, as far as I've seen.
The shoud have used Pendulum's Remix.
I like the Pendulum remix better, but that might upset the boomers who watch ABC News 24... still nice to hear the old theme back on the air tho
Nah the original is better. Those trumpets man.
It would work with where they need to have bits they can talk over
yeah, i wished this new version had a bit more clearer beat (doesn't need to be as hard as the pendulum remix but it should be catchy and flowy).
Somethings are best left in the past. This theme is one of them
The new tv weather presentation is poor. The maximums with the red background is VERY HARD to read
font consistency feels sub-optimal compared to the last format, if everything is sans serif as the main language, then why making the rolling news bulletin serif???
and the logo/time position in news channel isn't feels right at all, why not just place at the dead bottom and leave the temperature above it?

I think the modernised EDM drums hurt it, it needed bass instruments like a bassoon or bass guitar in the low end instead. The trumpet is iconic and still works fine, but the original version sounds better.
Agree
I like the old one better
this is meant to be modern?
This looks like a 1970's flashback and sounds like 1980s. ABC are just stuck in the past. Commercial networks are stuck in smut which leaves SBS as being the only decent Aussie 'free to air'.
It probably would have been better to entirely remaster the theme using a different orchestra. I always get an uncanny mismatch when listening to the visuals with the new theme. The probably needed more time to cook. (Pun unintended)
It was a good theme for its time but honestly it sounds dated to me now - if the ABC wanted to bring it back they could have remixed it a bit to make it sound more contemporary. Also not a big fan of the new graphics just looks rather bland all round to me. I was a fan of the previous 2 relaunches, but not this one.
I’m sorry but this feels more like a TV show than a news, maybe this could have worked with the previous news intro you had. Don’t like the new aesthetic
BUDDA BUP BUP-BAH BUDDA BUP-BABBAH BUDDA BUP-BABBAH!!
Hmm. I guess an improvement. Not quite as good as the orchestral theme and "Good evening, this is James Dibble ..."
I dont like the trumpet sound. I do like the version from 1991 theme.. kind of slightly diferent but same sound but way better from 1991. This one sounds like far too plain alone of the 80s i prefer the 1990s as in from 1990-1992
Sorry dint like it the new graphics look outdated and ik they were trying to appeal to nostalgia with the sound but it really just does not fit anymore in my opinion. There was nothing wrong with what they had before,
Modern lefties are bulk mad right now. This is classic ABC
*chef kiss*
Why add the drum kit? The original version felt punchy and unpredictable because of the lack of a steady beat underneath; now that it’s there, the theme as a whole sounds much blander. Always disappointing when an attempt to combine nostalgia and make something brand new ends up not working on either count
i think they needed more beats, either harder or none like the classic version, now it's kinda half hearted and hesitant.
Wow nailed it! I was wondering myself why it didn’t hit right. So cool to hear the awesome theme back, but I knew something wasn’t the same.
Ah, the ABC back with tradition and the great news theme. Didnt like the previous one as they tried to copy the BBC news theme.
This 80s trumpet music was good in the past, but the problem is that pieces like this are stuck in the past and can't be revived. It does not and will not bond well with the current contemporary times. It doesn't match the graphics at all. The previous drums + electronic music used from 2010-2024 never really aged and were a perfect reflection of the modern era. I hope @abcnewsaustralia get rid of this awful makeover and reinstate the old one.
Exactly. Does not fit at all. And yeah, sure it's a cute gimmick that the flute or whatever in the background plays "ABC" in morse-code, but it also just sounds like a kid blowing haphazardly into a flute. The (now old) theme would've fit perfectly fine with this rebrand.
Not to mention the graphics themselves - massive blue borders all over the place, meaning you lose like 25% of the screen space. The ABC News TH-cam channel's thumbnails have the same problem, with text then above the blue border, which makes zero sense. I don't mind the splash of colour, but they didn't have to throw the baby out with the bathwater. They could've tweaked the old graphics rather than changing it to just videos sliding across a screen with zero effects (e.g. the sliding up during the old intro).
And don't get me started on the fonts - this new serif font being mixed with sans-serif.. it's like it's having an identity crisis
@@luminism Serif font is definitely on trend for … uh, 5 years ago
I fully agree - that 2010 theme is superb. Modern, slick, current and reflected a bold new direction for presentation. Sultry almost - it commanded attention but retained a level of cool. Even its graphics too: ISTR it being very critically acclaimed after its release. Its 2017 version even more-so with the extra drums for impact. THAT one had attitude.
This new one I'm not toooo sure on, though the pre-headline and closing beds are pretty good. Also appreciating the nod to the previous theme: it's so slight and can easily miss it, but it's the three note bassline at approx 0:04 of this video.
I get the appeal... but yeah.
@@FernandsLiveShowShowI remember everyone thinking the old theme wasn’t on par with the 1985 theme. I do think this is a step in the right direction.
Not Australian. Just interested in news intros so don't have the nostalgia factor.
I felt like the ABC news intros when they first started ABC News 24 was the best by far. This feels a dated. The trumpets especially just don't sound great.
This version isnt great either bring it back as was or dont at all
DEI
A massive downgrade. We all love the 80s ABC theme but it sounds very outdated in 2024 and doesn’t work with the modern graphics.
So happy they brought back the old theme. Just love the wave of nostalgia that comes through whenever I hear it. Also like the new updated look ABC News has. Shame about the gadigal country nonsense.
Why? The world's oldest continuous living culture shouldn’t they be acknowledged?
I think the country bit is mandatory.
@@rossfranklin2782that's not actually true though, it's just an ultranationalist myth that Aboriginals made up about themselves. Every other culture on earth can also trace itself back through a continuous chain of ancestors, none of them just sprung out of the earth yesterday. All carry echoes of the past, often vastly more than Aboriginals, since people like the Chinese or Egyptians actually wrote down down their history and customs instead of leaving them to be mutated into a completely different state by the warping effect of oral history.
hate it .. too woke with the welcome to country bullshit
What does welcome to country mean?
