Yes this is a very good alcohol stove design, the best way I found to make the holes is use a nail and a hammer to punch the holes. Also the flams do burn quite invisible I have lost quite a few and knuckle hairs on a windy day.
Funnily enough, I've been using a DIY system similar to this for camping and hiking since I was about 14. My mates at scouts and I figured out we could make a cheaper alternative to buying a Trangia camping stove, which to anyone who doesn't know, is basically just a brass receptical filled with methylated spirits with a perforated iron lid with what equates to a tripod or pot stand with a cookpot above the fire. What my mates and I did was we got a medium-sized can, cut a hole in the side toward the bottom large enough to pass one of those kiddy corn cans through, added perforations to the top of the big can under the rim. Got a little kiddy corn can, stuffed toilet paper into it, then filling the can with the desired amount of metho/alcohol lighting it, then putting it through the side of the big can. the stove would then be ready to have a saucepan or small pot sitting on top of the open big can to cook some food. I've shown your video to a couple of my mates and now we're trying to make a more stable version. AWESOME video!!
You guys could definitely make a full production tv series, or even a movie, based on a post apocalyptic world. You could use many of the tactics in the show in different environments Not a zombie movie but something more modern rogue
I remember using a similar technique when my power was out many years ago. I used the toilet paper/alcohol trick. Empty out the contents of the can into your cooking vessel, remove the cardboard tube, stuff the toilet paper into the can your food came in, pour in the alcohol, light it and set it in between enough bricks to clear the height of the can, then set the pot on top with enough room to not extinguish the flame. Very useful when you're in a major pinch like that.
"Does it pass the Brushwood test" - guessing you didn't see him eat the electrolysis noodles... Brian, buddy, is everything ok at home? Does your wife not let you eat or does Jason just need to stage an intervention? We're here for you, either way... 😅
I've done a similar method using one can and a candle. Open one end of the can and put eight holes in a ring around the lip to vent air in. Then put holes in the lid to let the heat out, and set the can over a lit candle. There you have it, basically a hotplate to cook on.
Love how far this channel has come, I remember learning bar tricks from a spikey hair dude when I wasn’t even old enough to be at a bar now im learning how to make a hobo stove... loving this content
As someone who is apparently a Hobo (did not know this) I can say that stove does work wonders. Even as a heat source in winter though it is VERY risky.
If you're wondering, most modern hobos, from my experience, (I've been homeless) do general labor/manual labor in cities. In more rural areas they do alot of work in the fields.
I used to make hobo stoves all the time in cub scouts. the ones I made used a big empty can (usually baked beans) cut the top off but leave the bottom on. then make a large hole that's about 1/4 to 1/3 of the circumference then about halfway up the side of the can. then make holes near the top of the can, for air. light a fire in the big hole, and you're done. the bottom of the can becomes a flat top stove that you can put a big pot on. maybe make it a competition like the dakota fire pit? see which hobo stove is the best
I’ve made all kinds of different soda can alcohol stoves from simple double wall low pressure stoves to more complex high pressure stoves. I’ve also made coffee pots and cooking pots out of soda cans.
I read a long time ago the term Hobo was short for Hoe Boy, the solders from the civil war, at its end a lot didn't return home they jumped on and rode the trains or what ever means, just a Traveller, lot with PTS. They would get a garden Hoe and shorten it and bundle their belongings in a large, like handkerchief and sling it on the Hoe and the handle over one shoulder to carry.Thank you for video.
