This is actually the one channel that isn't really into speed cubing but accurately explains everything so real cubers don't get pissed off and people who don't do this type of stuff actually understands what's going on. *subscribes*
This reminds me of the time I entered a chess tournament for fun (I only occasionally play chess and never got into the whole theory) and there where only two people who were worse than me (one of which was ill and couldn't attend, the other one was my father).
Karl Kastor You cant play chess without having memorized a full opening. Kinda saddening but once you did it (can take years just to learn that certain way of chess ish thinkin) it actually is a hell lot of fun.
That's not really true. Easiest thing is to just play the modern defense every single game and queens gambit. You'll pretty much always get a playable position out of your opening. You can probably reach like 2k with minimal opening knowledge. Of course, by the time you reach 2k you probably would learn an opening pretty well.

Awesome video! The way you made it bridges the gap between cubers and non-cubers really well. You explained everything well enough that it makes sense to the layperson, but concisely enough that it's not boring for cubers. Can't wait for part 2! :)
Been going to these competitions since 2012, and this, to date, is the most accurate video on the subject with non-cubers as the intended audience. I already loved you Matt, now I'm swooning!!
I just want to say that you, matt parker, are the reason I now carry a cube wherever I go and my best solve is 50 seconds. Thank you. Keep up the good work!
1:26 You can go to a comp for the experience, fun, and meeting other cubers no matter how experienced you are at speedcubing. You actually should go so that you can meet other cubers and connect with the cubing community in real life.
Matt! You're the person that got me interested into Rubik's cubes last year. After a few months of a fantastic hobby I got to solving it in under 20 seconds on average c:
Multiblind is the craziest event of all time to me. Like even though I understand how it works, it’s so hard to wrap my head around the fact that people can do it. Since the time of Matt’s video, 11 people have beaten the 41 point world record and 2 more have tied it. The WR is currently 59 points (62/65)
Oh, the pre-stickerless days.......I don't remember it so vividly because I started cubing half a year ago. 10:35 Oh wow still no flashbacks but still oh wow
0:53 I got motivated to do rubik's cube and the 30€ cube I ordered didn't arrive yet so I downloaded an app. I got 5 min times pretty soon. My PB after 2 days is about 2 minutes on my phone xD. Can't wait to improve that time with a real cube :)
Cuber youtube is one of my favourite corners of the internet. Not because I'm a cuber (beyond the typical nerdy interest in puzzles), but because it is* a positive community of people geeking out over something they dearly love. And that is just what seems to have gone on here
So, interesting things you don't often hear about Rubic's Cubes. For example, the symmetry group of a 4x4x4 contains the symmetry groups of the 3x3x3 and the 2x2x2. The 4x4x4 is the only way you can build a true sudoku rubic's cube, where each face has the numbers 1-16 as well as each loop for any given cubelet. And there are some (theoretically more than one up to isomorphism, but I only checked one) arrangements on such a sudokube which have multiple valid solutions. Incidentally, trying to write proofs about the symmetry groups of two interacting puzzles is a great way to destroy half a year and go a little nuts.
Damn you Parker! Never knew speed cubes existed but bought one online before I finished the video. Won't be going for any records, but it'll bring back ancient teenage memories!
Ortega really is the easiest way to get fast at 2x2. It only takes about 14 algs to do it but if you do a one alg OLL(repeated 2 or 3 times according to situation) and eliminate symmetrical duplicates from the PBL list then you only need 5 algs to do it. Plus all of the PBL algs are short and easy to learn for example 2R 2F 2R is one of the algs. With this method you could greatly improve your time with minimal effort. If you want more details just ask and I'd be happy to help out
You did very close to what my time would have been. I don't really time myself often on 2x2 but I do on 3x3, which is why I can sometimes get sub-30 on a 2x2. I am happy with expanding the types of cubes I can solve rather than focus on just a few to get faster.
This is the video that got me into speedcubing. I've only been doing it for 3 to 4 months and I'm almost averaging sub-1 minute solves. It's a fun little hobby which is remarkably cheap. You can get really good speed cubes for about $5. As Matt says, don't use an actual Rubik's cube. Get a speed cube like the MF3RS to start.
@standupmaths In 1:44 the poster says "there is only ONE solution"... Which is of course wrong! there are few ways and it can be seen by drawing arrows on the sides' centers, or based on the direction of the rubik's-icon on the center of the white face. Maybe worth a video exploring that? P.S. like your videos.
Geez, I'm happy enough with an about 3 minute solve. Short enough duration to impress someone who doesn't know how to solve one by completing it within the duration of our short conversation, though I do wonder how much the better quality cube will help.
The sign at 2:00 claims there is only one solution to a Rubik's cube. I have a cube with patterned faces, it is possible to solve this cube so that the middle square on each face is at a different rotation to the rest of the squares on that face. So I would argue that there are in fact multiple solutions!
I feel bad, but I found this quite amusing, especially the last minute or so. ^^; Kudos for the times, though, I... don't think I could even get close to yours.
is there ever a situation where the solution is fewer moves than the number of moves to scramble it. I suppose I'm asking if there is a point where it is quicker to go forwards rather than backwards.
Maybe you'll say something about this solving methods and just how to umderstatnd this? Ps. thanks for the video about nim. I've won about 10 dollars already. Maybe you'll make a video about this triangle version?
I just call it lube or differential oil, because I literally use differential oil, Traxxas 50k and 30k. Haven't touched any other types of lube, of which there are several, and I use the thickest varieties that last the longest. Water based lubes typically don't last as long as silicone based lubricants. Traxxas is a pretty good all-around lube for an average or middling speedsolver with a decent puzzle that doesn't need much extra speed, just a smoother ride with some extra control.
I think Matt is wrong to say if you can't solve a 3x3x3 in under 30 seconds you shouldn't be there. If you're still solving at over minute going along to and entering the competitions is fun. Everyone is always friendly, and it is good motivation to improve.

Andrew Li But it’s intuitiveness, lookahead, and some algorithms.
Yes. Perfectly stated.
Lol true
"I got 125th. I like cube numbers."
- Matt Parker, on finishing fourth-to-last in a Rubik's Cube competition, 2016
It's 2017 already.
MonstraG But this was done in 2016
John Chessant Makes me think he paid the other people to make this joke!! Haha
Lo
budget max park

I'm a speedcuber and I loved this vlog. It explains pretty well how competitions work to non-cubers. Nice work Matt!
+Rulo Rubik Glad you enjoyed it and thought it was accurate!

this video is just overall wholesome and full of your respect and fascination for nerdy things.
+Laura JF fan I do love nerdy things.
standupmaths and people call me a neet because i can solve a hell lot af japanese number riddles...
Cubers unite! :D
And this is probably one of the best coverages of a cubing comp by a not-really-non-cuber I've seen, so well done Matt!
+yovli porat Thanks! Glad you thought it was a good documentation of a comp.
yovli porat So you mean pseudo twisty puzzler.
Cheers for the shout-out Matt!
1:31 oh Matt... #parkersquare
You mean parkercube?
ParkerTesseract?
no, parkercube makes sense but this doesn't. Why tesseract?
because Matt transcends reality..
ok
Been going to these competitions since 2012, and this, to date, is the most accurate video on the subject with non-cubers as the intended audience. I already loved you Matt, now I'm swooning!!

He meant definitely.

A while ago I was working on a layer-by-layer solve for the 5x5x5. The top layer had stumped me. This video has inspired me to have another go!
2 second penalty! a classic Parker cube...
Also, tmw the penalty barely matters! x'D
nerdexproject it would for the cubers who win the competitions. That is what it was designed for.
That's a good one
CUBRICANT
I have never heard that before and I am subscribed to at least 3 cubing channels.
I just want to say that you, matt parker, are the reason I now carry a cube wherever I go and my best solve is 50 seconds. Thank you. Keep up the good work!
+Alphactory Aedan Fantastic! Glad I got you started. Now I need to catch up with your PB.
Thanks for the video Matt. Nice to see our work portrayed accurately and in a very positive way!
That little girl is adorable and brilliant, definitely one to watch out for if she keeps up the maths ;-)
10:22 that joke!! Well done hahahah
1:31 He didn't finish it!

classic Parker square
Parker cube!

Well this took a while to upload
I love how the comment section is so calm with how he explains everything
Matt! You're the person that got me interested into Rubik's cubes last year. After a few months of a fantastic hobby I got to solving it in under 20 seconds on average c:
who else thinks (and this is for the real cubers) it is super funny how he explains lock-ups and corner cuts 😂😂
Ivan Vojvodic quite accurate though xD
lol
Real time should be done with the orignal.. training and practice with the modified.
Ivan Vojvodic Yeah it was kinda funny. I can solve 3x3 in 28 sec. Not that great.
Kent Kawamura I'm not a lot better, my record is about 23 seconds, but according to the non-cubers, we are geniuses😂
math and cubing
two of my favorite things
in one!
brilliant!
let me know when they add a 1x1 category to the competition. i might stand a chance in that one
I love this guys personality !!

I erased feet from my memory, and this video has to remind me of that event.
0:53 I got motivated to do rubik's cube and the 30€ cube I ordered didn't arrive yet so I downloaded an app. I got 5 min times pretty soon. My PB after 2 days is about 2 minutes on my phone xD. Can't wait to improve that time with a real cube :)
I'm curios about the number of comments that have "Parker square" in it compared to those who actually tried to be funny and say "Parker cube".
This was far more interesting than I expected! I'm excited for part 2 now.
Thank you, Parker! The video was well worth the wait 😄
Cuber youtube is one of my favourite corners of the internet. Not because I'm a cuber (beyond the typical nerdy interest in puzzles), but because it is* a positive community of people geeking out over something they dearly love. And that is just what seems to have gone on here
I was going to leave an amusing comment about a "Parker's cube", but about 90% of the comments had beaten me to it!
+Nilguiri ಠ_ಠ
The editing that goes into your videos is amazing
+Nicolás Torchia You can thank Trent of Trunkman Productions for this one.

Yay!! Been waiting for this video for a while now! 😀😀
+Ali161102 You're not alone.
Great documentary. Looking forward to part II.

Elijah Berry That’s the Varasano Method.
Ortega takes 12 algs
Took you long enough Matt! I asked you about this back in January!
+Sam596 And we finished it just for you.
You did very close to what my time would have been. I don't really time myself often on 2x2 but I do on 3x3, which is why I can sometimes get sub-30 on a 2x2. I am happy with expanding the types of cubes I can solve rather than focus on just a few to get faster.
6:55 Is that the Parker-Cube method of solving?
As you are a Mathematician, I would've expected you to join the "fewest move" tournament!
1:36 the white square in the center of that face... so Parker-squarely it's a circle
FINALLY! I've been expecting this so much
Yuval Nehemia me too man. Since he uploaded the one on Mats Valk last year
+amirPenton I know! It kept getting delayed when other projects came along. But with the World Comp coming up I new I had to get it out soon.
standupmaths So you will go to World Champs 2017 in Paris?
Wait, 2016?
Nathan Hernandez it is the official year of the parker square.
but its 2017 right??
November 2016
Yeah, it was last year's UK Championships.
In Trump years it's 2038 and we're living in a dystopian future that no DeLorean will come and fix.
"because I like cube numbers"... oh god that joke is too perfect!! Haha
"For some people Elizabeth" This had me cracking up
Ahh, got me all excited for a Tetris video!
+Xystem 4 One day I shall do a Tetris video! I'll make sure I introduce it as a Rubik's video…
I await that day eagerly!
4:32 LOL he's wearing a Putin sleeping mask!
Oh, I see, I didn't know about the super speedy models, I wondered how they could flick 'em around so fast.
Going to a comp on Saturday!

The person who solved 14 cubes blindfolded failed because the one he didn’t do was rubiks brand
Matt should've noticed that there were 128 contestants in the competition! How dare he not fully appreciate the magic of binary numbers!
If you've got 2s and 8s in your binary numbers they sure are magic.
You came 125/128, you really like powers wow
you make it look so much fun
@standupmaths
In 1:44 the poster says "there is only ONE solution"... Which is of course wrong!

With practice you can get sub-20 or better with any cube that has a fair amount of corner cutting.
5:03 Is it Maxim Chechnev?
Can do beginner method in 1:27. Trying to learn f2l and its driving me crazy
Just came here from that Christmas live stream w/ Tom Scott and Matt Gray, where this video was mentioned. Amazing timing.
+Александр Бантьев The system works!
BTW, can you do more with them? It would be awsome!

I feel bad, but I found this quite amusing, especially the last minute or so. ^^; Kudos for the times, though, I... don't think I could even get close to yours.

4:31 , the expression is pure gold
is there ever a situation where the solution is fewer moves than the number of moves to scramble it. I suppose I'm asking if there is a point where it is quicker to go forwards rather than backwards.
I have been lookin' for your song for so long.
+SioxerNic And now you've found it: standupmaths.bandcamp.com/releases
Charming and funny host I must say.
"I came 125th... Because I like cube numbers" xD
You deserve first place for best cubik joke!
Rubix Cube: Parker solve. Solve some of the Rubix cube so that you can cover up the unsolved part
*rubik's
No, It's a parker spelling.
I'm assuming you're expected to do better than just the inverse of the scramble moves for the lowest number of moves?
James Coyle it's likely the solution is fewer moves than the scramble so you'd lose either way
Just using the inverse of the scramble is illegal.
It's good to see Michael Palin out and about!
Maybe you'll say something about this solving methods and just how to umderstatnd this?
Ps. thanks for the video about nim. I've won about 10 dollars already.
Maybe you'll make a video about this triangle version?
3:20 can't they just write the inverse of the scramble?
Let's make the 5D rubik's cube championships!
Could you do a video explaining the 4x4 parity? idk whether it's maths related or not, but it still remains a mystery to me haha
Is lubricant for a Rubik's Cude called Rubik's Lube?
theres a brand of lube called lubix
its called lube
I just call it lube or differential oil, because I literally use differential oil, Traxxas 50k and 30k. Haven't touched any other types of lube, of which there are several, and I use the thickest varieties that last the longest. That's what she said.
Rubiks brand lube is called Cube Lube
finally another cube video
I think Matt is wrong to say if you can't solve a 3x3x3 in under 30 seconds you shouldn't be there. If you're still solving at over minute going along to and entering the competitions is fun. Everyone is always friendly, and it is good motivation to improve.
0:02 he pronounced an r!
‘If you can’t do it in under 30 seconds you shouldn’t be here’ that’s not true comps are for all
Will you go to the World Championship in Paris? Hahahahaha hope to see you there :D
+Rubiking I might drop by as a spectator.
1:40 That was a classical Parker Square
Great thumbnail
This is probably the best cult in the world.
Can you share the data from 9:30? It seems like it can be interesting to analyze...
Thanks! Let's see what I can analyze... o:
He did not complete it at the start he just showed us some of the completed part but at the bottom it was still scrambled
And after the Parker Square he finally made it into the 3rd dimension, presenting the Parker Cube!
Good job Matt!
also check out /r/cubers on reddit if you want to learn more! (if you already know how to solve a cube but want to get faster I also have some videos)
+UKcuber I lurk on r/cubers. Will check out your videos!
Parker time beetwen recording and uploading
+Grzegorz Cichosz Yeah, it took ages to sort through the footage and we kept getting distracted by other projects.
right, exactly. What about Hugh and Matt do some things?
Hilarious! You should go to more speedcubing competitions. Don't worry about your times Matt
is it possible to make a 3d cube that works like a 4d cube?
