    Hi beautiful mamas & friends! These are a bunch of answers to questions I received on instagram regarding breastfeeding and formula feeding. I actually received wayyyy more questions on these topics but I didnt want to make this video a mile long so I tried to get as many into this as I could. If you still have questions please join us in our facebook group: Jess Hover & Friends and post your question in there! I want to preface this video by saying I don't know a lot about formula feeding but I am excited to learn more and hopefully what I do know is helpful to you guys. I am so thankful for this community and wish you all the best in baby feeding!
    Reminder to anyone who is wondering - you are an amazing mom. Love your children and nourish them the best way you can, if that is from the breast or from a can of formula there is no judgement here, do whatever you are able to do to keep your child healthy. The most important thing is that there is opportunity for you and the baby to connect, and that bonding can happen no matter what your baby is drinking.
    Thank you for being here!
    See you on instagram! @jess_hover

    Thank you for being quite possibly the most down to earth, realistic mom you tuber out there! You are never on your pedestal or seemingly shaming other moms for parenting however they are...unlike other channels. Parenting is hard and the last thing anyone needs is more feelings of inadequacy in that department.
    I am currently raising my 5 month old daughter who is my third child. Breastfeeding has been a struggle every time. My first child had about 3 months of it, all of which was hard and she never got enough milk. Eventually I switched her to formula and felt like a failure. My second got all of 3 days then we went straight to bottle feeding with formula to avoid that headache again. This time around, I am doing something called exclusive pumping. Honestly not a concept I had been aware of before- all I knew was traditional nursing or formula feeding. This little one gets mostly pumped breast milk in a bottle and some formula to supplement where my supply is low. Not an easy thing to do, but worth it in my opinion. Supply has been an issue for all 3, so I am so happy we’ve been able to do this for as long as we have. I have tried everything under the sun to increase supply but it just isn’t enough on most days. I am starting to feel okay with the situation as it is but let me tell you it has taken a while to get there, what with all the ‘breastfeeding is best’ speeches out there. Main thing is you are taking care of your baby!
    Great informative video, thank you!

      Thank you for sharing this! I am in the same situation with my first child, now 5 weeks old. My milk supply is not enough so I've been supplementing with formula since she was 1 week old and I feel like a failure each time she starts crying again after having nursed and I have to give her some formula. Your story helps ☺️ makes me feel less alone

    My son Harrison is 1 month old on 2nd February and we're breastfeeding. Last night was the first time he had a bottle (expressed milk) by my mum so I could get more than 2 hours sleep and he took to it perfect. No nipple confusion. Fingers crossed it lasts

    • @carlaallendes1110
      @carlaallendes1110 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am glad you got a better night of sleep!! that is ALWAYS helpful, but remember until 3 months old it is very important the frequency that your breasts get stimulated (baby or extractor(or hand expressed)) to ensure the amount produced. It is very likely that Harrison will start asking for more milk at 1 month old, 1.5, and 3 months old, to increase the production even more during those rapid growing weeks(growth spurts), I send you my love and strength on these periods! because the only way to increase production is giving them the breast every time they ask for it, specially at night, when your body is naturally releasing extra prolactine (the milk production hormone) and the suckling helps increase this even more, bumping the amounts of milk for the next day
      I hope you continue to get your mom's help, we don´t need to go through lactation alone, it is a family process but you are the one providing ALL what the baby needs and that deserves all the support that you can get
      sweet dreams! keep calm and breastfeed on

  • @kylahgabbert127
    @kylahgabbert127 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Please know that pumping before delivering can be dangerous to signal premature labor. Your baby ONLY needs the tiny bit of colostrum for the first few days because their stomach is the size of a large marble. Just want to encourage those that feel like they don't have enough supply. Also, fed is best, so supplement what you need! My little guy was Jaundice-y so he would fall asleep before finishing nursing because he was so tired. He had to have bottles so he got enough food.

    Seriously, hands down the best and most helpful mom channel 🙏🏼. When did your pediatrician okay purées? Also when was/is Wilson able to sit up by himself at 6 months? I have an almost 4 month old daughter. She hates tummy time so much, but she rolls, from back to front (not front to back), and slides herself down from her seats so we have to make sure to strap her in now. I’m worried she won’t sit or crawl around the time she’s supposed to because of how much she doesn’t like tummy time. We have a ped appointment soon where I’ll ask all this stuff, but I figured you might have some advice, too.

    If you plan to breastfeed, one of the first things you should do after the baby is born is ask to see a lactation consultant especially if you're a first-time mom! I didn't see one till I had fed him about 3 times and I wasn't doing it right and my nipples were already sore! Ask to see one and don't be afraid to see a lactation consultant several times in your visit or even after you leave the hospital. Nurses can help too, but lactation consultants do this all day, they are experts!

  • @sitcomchristian6886

    Nursing on my side was the most amazing position ever! It was especially great at night when I was sleep-deprived, because I wasn't worried I would drift off and drop the baby.

    I formula fed my son because of PPD. I HIGHLY recommend the Baby Brezza! It’s a game changer. The formula pitcher is great, too. You can also get travel containers for your formula power. They are divided up into sections and the lid opens up to just that section. All you need to do is poor it in the bottle! (Travel kids are a must for Dr. Brown’s, they leak.)

    • @JentasticJohnson
      @JentasticJohnson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Be careful with the baby brezza, I've found that if it isn't perfectly cleaned and dried before reassembly that it won't always put the proper amount of formula to water ratio. Makes me super nervous, I've found it hard to trust it over time.

      Ha! My little one was super fussy after she turned 2 weeks old. I didn't feel like I had the same baby I brought home from the hospital. Part of it is she's just not a big cuddle bug. But I'm starting to understand her personality better, and now that she's a year old we can play games together and it's a lot more fun. I think some kids are just more grumpy than others - try to find the humor in it. You'll get there! 1 Peter 5:10

    This is a great video! One thing I disagree with, though. At 20:42, you start talking about making sure milk fills the nipple of the bottle. But you actually DON'T want to do that if you're doing paced bottle feeding to mimic the flow and control baby has at the breast. You actually want the baby upright and the bottle horizontal to the ground so that the baby has more control of the flow like they do at the breast and so they don't guzzle it down and get overfed. Also want to say that your baby is adorable and the first like 3 minutes of the video made me laugh and reminded me of my experience with my son.

    My baby is 5 weeks today. It’s currently 4:30 AM and I’ve been up since 1 am. I searched for supplementing formula and found this video. I exclusively breast feed and also try to pump but it’s hard to do both because it’s hard to time pumping away from when he needs to eat. I’m considering supplementing some formula feedings so I can get some rest at night and SO can feed him but I feel like I’m not supposed to because I don’t have a medical reason to do so. Also idk if it gets easier and I should just wait. He eats every 2 1/2 hours all day and even most nights. Idk what to do :(

      Sabrina Tabor yes, I really liked that video. I just haven’t had a kid yet, and I’ve been really contemplating it with my husband, but I keep coming up with reasons not to. I think I’m just scared. Right now I makes sense to, I’m in the military and they will pay the medical bills and help with child care and all of that. I just worry that I won’t be enough if I do because I’m too young or not motherly or don’t have tons of funds. So long story short I was just trying to find videos covering how to know if you should or really want to be mother yet or not. I know no one can tell me, and that I have to know for myself but I Kinda feel lost in the sauce 🤷🏻‍♀️

It is definetly a major life change. It's the most difficult yet rewarding thing you'll ever do. Luckily you do have natural instincts and if you have a supportive partner, that makes things easier. There is never going to be a perfect time and you will never have enough $. They really dont need very much in the beginning. Just to be fed, changed and loved. Best of luck on your decision!

    When my twins were in the nicu, they didn’t want me to try and nurse them at first because it would make them very tired and could do their progress more harm than good. I was worried about nipple confusion because they ate from tiny bottles and were given pacis to help them learn the suck reflux, and their doctor told me there is no such thing as nipple confusion, just FLOW confusion. It should be okay to offer baby a bottle as long as it is a slow flow nipple that mimics the natural nipple. I found it to be true!

    I just drove from Florida to North Carolina with my almost 6 month old(I'm crazy, I know lol) and like 50% of the time I can't see him and that makes me crazy(er 😂).

      She worked for her, she does something involved with dealing with entertainment industry folks with like management of time say for a fashion show ect I know she’s worked with lots of random ppl like Tyler the creator ect so it ranges but it sounds like she does a job for a time and then it’s done and onto the next and so on.

      I’ve heard you don’t have to but I find that my baby doesn’t like the cold milk as much, and this could be because breast milk is naturally warm/body temperature coming out of the breast.

    It's actually very important to add the powder formula to boiling water. Powder formula isn't sterile and there have been illnesses caused my improperly prepared formula. Boiling water sanitizes the powder, and then your supposed to let it cool. You could also prepare the formula as a concentrate and store it in the fridge (so half the amount of boiling water to the normal amount of formula), and then dilute with hot water so that it's a regular temp.

    Fed is best. No mom shame for the moms who chose to feed their babies from formula. Every situation is different, and as long as the baby is happy and healthy, how they're fed doesn't matter.

    Former NICU mom here! Just want to reiterate what Jess said about feeding NICU babies for any new NICU moms that might be reading.
    Before birth, breastfeeding was something that I really wanted to do and when my baby went straight to the NICU, was too small to suck and given a feeding tube, I was worried this wouldn’t happen. The staff at my hospital were amazing and immediately set me up with a hospital grade pump while I was still a patient and made sure I was supported in getting my milk supply established even though I couldn’t nurse. After a few weeks in the NICU my baby was able to successfully take feeds of expressed milk from bottles and we were discharged. After a month at home of exclusively pumping, she latched and we are now almost 6 months in with breastfeeding almost exclusively.
    My personal major takeaways from this experience: don’t let unexpected circumstances make you think you automatically won’t be able to breastfeed. Advocate for yourself if it’s important to you and don’t be afraid to ask for a pump, lactation consultants to teach you how to pump, when, etc. If you want to breastfeed with a NICU baby it can be done so don’t get discouraged. Second, don’t be afraid to see giving expressed milk in bottles as a victory. In our early NICU days I was hesitant to give my baby bottles and was so upset when she would latch with a bottle and not on my breast. Any feed your baby isn’t taking from a feeding tube is a win! As they grow and develop, the breastfeeding latch will come. If it’s important to you, keep trying.
    The month of exclusive pumping and bottle feeding literally around the clock was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my entire life, but it was SO worth it for me personally looking back. You’ve got this!! We are all routing for you and support you in doing what’s best for you and your baby, whatever that looks like 💛 hang in there and it’ll get easier with time.

      P.S. Shout out to women who are breast milk donors for NICU babies! Thanks to you, my preemie baby was able to have donor milk through her feeding tube the first few days of life before my milk came in. I appreciate you and am so grateful for you!

    Has he got any dislocation on one of his shoulders or something like that? How was his birth? Sometimes it doesn't show right away, but an osteopath apparently can locate and solve such malfunctions, that may be the cause, why a baby doesn't want to be in a certain position. Is his tongue position alright? Try to use another holding position, the easiest for him, when he is on the non preferred side. He looks uncomfortable in the normal position you showed. Maybe he would at least like the position to bond and maybe try harder over time. If you just give it to him, when he is u happy he could associate it with that negative feeling and just hanging there instead of really trying and demanding it from that side to increase the supply. Some milk pumps come with a (heated?) massage application to increase the milk supply. You could try it manually. Maybe those ideas and suggestions don't work for you, but you could give it a try, if you want.
    I heard, the grabbing thing while nursing is a natural instinct and supposed to be on the breasts to stimulate the milk production. Maybe he gets enough milk on his preferred side, so he keeps himself busy by grabbing or scratching other areas.
    I can't remember properly, but I think you have to be really careful with using the haaka (silicone bottle) and low milk supply.
