Bruh, they gave me a loan when I was 17 years old. I'm still paying it off 10 years later. This shit crazy. Plus, they won't let me get a credit card until I finish paying it off. So my credit score is basically still at 0. It's crippling as fuck boi.

A little piece of advice: Go to a community College for your first 2 years. It is much cheaper and allows you to experiment without much risk. I was paying maybe 800 dollars a semester and figured out I wanted to pursue medicine. I transferred to a major university after my first 2 years and was paying 10 grand a semester. I saved over 40k just because I decided to go to the community College first. I am now half way through my 1st year of medical school. The stigma of community College needs to stop.

This isnt plausible for the majoirty of students. If majority of people start going to community college first then they will obviously up the prices fo community college to match universitys. Not to mention this wont happen anyway. I went to community college first two years without taking a loans and basically went there for free while they were giving me thousands in free money. When i transferred to my university i had to start taking some loans because cost of attendance is roughly 20-25k yearly and fafsa only awards roughly 6k in grants FOR A YEAR. Meaning a student will only get half of that which is 3k a semester. That barely covers a half your classes if your taking roughly 12-15 credits a semester.
You will have to take loans to cover the other half. This isnt even factoring other universities where tuition is astronomically higher.
Lets not mention buying books, etc and people who come from other states to for dorms and student apartments which means you half to accept more loans . One will say apply for scholarships which i can tell you in the past 4 years ive applied for more than 300 scholarships and only gotten one and the majority of people ive asked have said they never won a scholarship either.
In my case the first year i transferred to a university i was using the free refund money i got to pay rent which helped but it ran out so i was left to get a job and other means to make money. Im major in engineering so im a stem major just like you.
One other thing a student wont get the full refund amount of they arent taking classes full time which is 12 hours of greater. If you take less than 12 hours is considered half time, etc and your grants decreases accordingly.
So in the case where you say stigma of community college doesnt really apply. I dont know any person majoring in medicine that isnt taking some sort of loans. Especially when you will have to go to medical school which is even more expensive.

Returning to school as a more mature student sucked at first but I learned a lot. I definitely was not ready initially but taking the time off to work and travel and just be a young adult was necessary. I found my niche and what career I wanted to pursue moving forward. A lot of people that make good after college could already afford it beforehand so they didn't have to worry about debt.

Now, 10 years later, I'm still trying to pay off almost $40,000 in debt, and climbing. The only reason I chose the career path I chose was because it had something to do with biology.
Was it my passion? Nope. It just happens to be something I felt I could tolerate, eventually I could work from home and it makes those 4 years I spent not be completely in vain.
Unfortunately, I still have no clue what my "passion" is. But bills, loans, and rent isn't going to wait for the heavens to send me a sign. At this point I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it works out. What is life...

Also, a lot of not that smart kids go to community college so a lot of people see it as a place for people who are not that smart. Plus a lot of people downplay them and praise regular 4-year University, and to a young child, if everyone is praising something although you might not know what it is you would want it.

Went to a CC and graduated with my A.S. right before Christmas. I studied like crazy and joined the honor society, and when I transferred to my local University, they gave me an academic scholarship that covers half my tuition. There are so many opportunities available, but many students don't look into them or apply themselves. Glad I waited until I was 34 to go to college.
CC was awesome, but too many students look down on them or simply don't want to "waste" two years of their "college experience" that entails partying and living on campus. Cool. Go party and graduate in debt. I'll stay at home and graduate debt-free in two years.

What schools should be doing is making sure every person knows how to do that. $50k in student debt isn't that bad if you choose the right major and if you can live with your parents for a short time after college. Depending on your major, you can pay off that debt in 1-2 years. Compare that to the 10+ years of experience you'd need to even get the same position when you don't have a degree.

@Brian May Let's put realization into context. When most jobs require a bachelor's degree or higher education, they leave you no choice but to go to college. What high school and adults fail to do is teach kids the risks of going into highschool, understanding grants and loans, etc. When the cost of college/university consistently increases to an unfathomable amount, while most jobs still pay minimum wage or a few dollars above. Most kids are not able to be a full time employee while simultaneously being a full time student. Even with being a full time, plenty are unable to even pay off a semester because, as I said, cost of attending sky rockets every year. This isn't the 1900s where working at your local corner store could pay for college. Wages has not improved to match college. Most adults, today, would be in debt if they went to college with little to no financial help, working the jobs they did. So the excuse of boomers and old people about loans is as ineffective as using a broken condom.

@Brian May I see your point. And partially, I agree. At some point after 18 (in an ideal world, by 18) you do have to take accountability for your decisions. But we're talking about the phenomenon in modern American culture where that "counsel" you mentioned pushes young people going to college immediately at 18 as the sole correct choice.
My only real point in this conversation is I think it should be much more normalized to wait at least a couple years after graduating high school to enter college. In the current system, we are (if you go to college and get a bachelor's degree) in school our entire lives until we're 22 or so. Having some real world experience before you begin going 10s of thousands in debt should not be frowned upon, the way it is in many communities.
I think that's the main point here. It's not absolving anyone of the responsibility to pick a smart path for themselves: we're just saying we could give better advice to our kids.

I was one of the unfortunate that had ignorant parents who took out a loan for me and co-signed it.
I was ignorant at the time and was really dependent on my parents because they had more experience...
My mother especially who wore the pants in the family, refused to let me have a job and I had to push later on to have one so I can get experience and have my own money.
Little did I know my parents were like a lot of other parents in America who would make the same mistake.
The messed up part about everything aside from having this massive debt over my head that now I alone have to pay, is that because I was on the president's and Dean's list, top of my class and major for both universities, I was eligible for scholarships and grants I could have not have to pay ANYTHING.
Now I have this very huge debt over my head and if it weren't for that my credit would be perfect. It is the only debt that I have and a part of me resents my parents especially my mom for that since she has been in this country from she was in her 20s.
I feel like that's more than enough time to do the research and learn from your mistakes. 🤦‍♀️
Now my two little brothers have also been forced to take out loans. I'm not using any of those degrees and I am doing well for myself OUTSIDE of my majors. Furthermore, the second University I went to still has my diploma because I am short $4,000. They can keep that piece of shit.
Unless you are going to school to be a doctor, architect, or anything else that are life or death jobs, college is a SHAM!!
The best I can do right now is to learn from my parents mistakes and I have. I'm doing better than both my parents financially and I love them very much but they are still struggling and making the same stupid financial mistakes over and over again.

Finding a job is difficult, which is hilarious considering that we are constantly pummeled with this message of “the mental health field is growing the stigma is slowly being lifted more mental health professionals are needed”; whilst this may be true, they don’t tell you that they’re looking for professionals that are already licensed. It takes two years of work post-master’s to acquire a license to practice therapy, and that’s assuming that you hit the jackpot and find somewhere to acquire those hours and supervision within that time frame. A lot of clinics and hospitals only hire if you already have your license. So in the meantime, it’s like you’re back in high school attempting to get a job with no experience whilst everyone hiring requires experience.
The documentation/paperwork is tedious. The system is rigged against many mental health professionals due to insurance companies demanding that things are done a certain way, and only paying out for clients to get x amount of sessions when they might need much more. I could go on about this forever, but I will pause here and say that it’s not what I thought I signed up for. Around the age of 16 I became a Christian which meant a lot of people I hung around with or things I did changed. This definitely helped me not be easily influenced by what everyone else around me thought and I learnt to make my own choices based on what older people taught me and after reading many accounts of student loan debt. Along with this, I learnt a principle from the Bible:
Proverbs 22:7 (KJV) The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
Ever since I learnt this principle I avoided debt like the plague. I always said to my parents that I wanted to go to University but I just didn't want the debt. At the time it caused some strife but now, 7 years later, I have completed 2 academic courses in my field fully paid for by my company and now I am studying a degree, fully paid by my company as well.
The very first college (UK) I went to did actually have drop in sessions to teach people alternatives to University such as the path I am on now. But, what always amazed was that at times there were only 2 people (including myself) in the drop in sessions even though these sessions could have saved several people tens of thousands of pounds, just free knowledge for anyone to have.
However, as discussed, the college probably had quotas for getting people to University and sadly some people go to University solely for "the party life". There is much more to discuss on this topic but I'll stop here.

At 18 you are old enough to vote... so you are telling me you are old enough to make decisions that will impact the future of the court but not old enough to take out a loan? I wouldn't call loans with a 1% to 5% ( not to mention the interest doesn't kick in until after you graduate) interest rate "predatory loans" they are loans with very good terms. There are too many people as it is going to uni for stupid majors. I (like Aba and Preach live in MTL) there is an epidemic of university qualified people working service jobs because they took some shit like theater or gender studies..... I havent met many people who graduated in business that still work as a waiter.... Making Uni free would be a very bad thing. it would turn uni into high school 2.0. Its funny how we dont use the same logic to get a teen out of a loan for getting a car they cant afford of getting into huge credit card debt. When I was a student, the students at Carleton University were having a protest in regards to tuition prices. I stopped to talk to 1 person in the crowd, and told her tuition is expensive because gov't guarantees the loans and anyone qualifies. She didn't like that I was implying we need to end these guaranteed loans.
Either we guarantee anyone go to college and prices continue to soar, or let the people making the loans decide whether it's worth it and the market finds the price. You can't have it both ways.

Not only that, but Carleton has enough cash on hand that if the entire campus crumbled, they could rebuild it from their chequing account.
Being a dual citizen, I studied in Canada, and now work in the US(cuz $$$). You should see tuition in the states. I ask my co-workers why they're willing to spend over $100k on college tuition for their kids when that would be half a house in this state. I haven't gotten a straight answer from any of them. If it was me, I'd give my kid a choice "Take the $100k, and go to college or buy a house. Either way, you're not living here rent free anymore. So pick."

    2. My HS economics teacher taught us about home economics such as how to do your taxes, how to apply for jobs, things like that.
    3. My HS was VERY college focused. We would have two assemblies a year that were talking about the importance of college (e.g. college grads make x amount more an average), and had college fairs every year. It was so ingrained in me through my education that going to college was the next step that at the time of college graduation, I didn't even realize that it is still a big accomplishment.

@@12JIHED 1k a year doesn't sound so bad. If you already have an interest in coding, I say stay there until you finish. If that's not really your interest, find something else. Diplomas help but you should also consider making a portfolio for projects you have done. If you don't have projects under your belt, just make blogs for your hobbies or something. If you can solve a problem in one of your hobbies, do that too and add it to your portfolio. Make sure you have a resume with education and project experience on there too. Start a LinkedIn account, fill it up, and get lots of connections. Connections make you look like you have influence and are active. It will also make you more findable during searches and more recommendable when people are on your connections' profiles. Also, having team experience is also important. If you can find someone to work on a project with you, it will show that you can work within a team. Also, if you can make improvements to code libraries, that shows that you can work with other people's code and are active in the open source community. You can also ask and answer questions on stack overflow. That also shows that you're active. You don't have to do all of this but it should give you a good idea of what to do next. Good luck 👍

Over here in the UK, many of those who want to go into medicine have to take their studies seriously in their early teens. You can't leave it until you're 30, heck, even 25, before you make decisions. You need to plan ahead.
