This is a potentially dangerous thing for the snakes. At some point a squirrel will fight back and could seriously injure one or both of the snakes. Not to mention, they can introduce parasites and disease to the snakes or even you. If the squirrel was wild caught, you could also introduce fleas and/or ticks into the snakes's enclosure. This is obviously done just to get personal thrills. If you aren't going to put the welfare of the snakes first, you shouldn't have them.

The owner IS cruel. Taking care of your pets is great. We should all do that. It may not be common, but if an animal is able to to live in captivity with no stress, it is still consider as a pet. It may be horrible, but it's the way nature goes. Nature has a lot of horrible stuff in it, and most of the time, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. It's unfair to say that people who feed their snakes animals should die, because it's the only thing they CAN feed their snakes. Sure the animal doesn't have to be alive when it happens, but either way, the animal is destined to die, and it's usually quickly. I know this squirrel's death was not quick at all, but sometimes that happens. Most of the animals that snakes eat are usually overpopulated, such as mice and rats. It's actually a good thing they eat mice because in the wild, mice are basically huge pests. They destroy crops, breed like crazy, and invade houses. I know this wasn't a mouse and is not really considered a pest, but it's a type of rodent nonetheless and that's usually what snakes eat.

I get your point, but saying the squirrel was *completely* defenseless is wrong. Squirrels can be incredibly dangerous to snakes, and can kill them. This isn’t meant to try and dispute your opinion, but I thought I would just inform you that this is indeed very dangerous to the snakes as well. On top of that, I would like to add that some snakes refuse to eat already dead food, and must kill it themselves. Besides if he were to get already dead food it would have had to be killed by humans anyway, so what’s the difference? I would say that it’s worth it to keep your pet snake alive.
My emotional side says "oh no, what's wrong with you?! Don't feed him a live squirrel" but my logical and rational side says "this is what happens in the wild kingdom. Who are we to bend the rules of nature".
I thought rattlesnakes were really efficient killers and that their venom could finish off a rodent in little more than a minute. Maybe this was a lazy snake who didn't feel it needed to waste precious venom. That other snake gets nothing. Do they have some sort of hierarchy in which the one that kills the prey eats first? Is it such a good idea having two of them in the same tank? Won't they attack each other if they feel threatened? Unless one is a female and you want them to breed it seems like a risky thing to do.

First of all, to you who are saying that the snake is evil because it killed an innocent squirrel, you are only saying that because since the squirrel is fluffy and you think it's "cute". In this video, the squirrel was killed for a reason and that reason is so that the snake can live. The squirrel had to be alive because if the snake saw a dead animal, most likely it would stay away from it because in nature, most animal die from either being eaten or a disease. If it sees a deal animal lying on the ground, it obviously didn't die from being eaten so the snake is going to assume it died from disease because it doesn't know that it was frozen. This is for all you out there wondering why the rattlesnake venom took a while to kill the squirrel. Rattlesnake venom is a series of different toxins all of which the rattlesnake creates from its diet. A wild rattlesnake eats a wide variety of bugs and critters, and thus has access to a large variety of chemical compounds. This results in a potent venom which contains up to several hundred different toxins. A rattlesnake in captivity has a modified diet, and thus may only be able to create a dozen or so toxins. This is a huge plus for the pet owner because it makes the venom much easier to treat should a person becomes poisoned.

For anybody that doesn't actually own snakes the biggest downside of feeding live is that if the snake isn't hungry right then the food itself gets brave, angry, or hungry and actually starts trying to attack your snake. The only thing worse than a finicky feeding snake is a blind finicky feeding snake that was attacked by its live prey.

This is a potentially dangerous thing for the snakes. At some point a squirrel will fight back and could seriously injure one or both of the snakes. Not to mention, they can introduce parasites and disease to the snakes or even you. If the squirrel was wild caught, you could also introduce fleas and/or ticks into the snakes's enclosure. This is obviously done just to get personal thrills. If you aren't going to put the welfare of the snakes first, you shouldn't have them.

It may not be common, but if an animal is able to to live in captivity with no stress, it is still consider as a pet. It's unfair to say that people who feed their snakes animals should die, because it's the only thing they CAN feed their snakes. Sure the animal doesn't have to be alive when it happens, but either way, the animal is destined to die, and it's usually quickly. I know this squirrel's death was not quick at all, but sometimes that happens. Most of the animals that snakes eat are usually overpopulated, such as mice and rats. It's actually a good thing they eat mice because in the wild, mice are basically huge pests. They destroy crops, breed like crazy, and invade houses. I know this wasn't a mouse and is not really considered a pest, but it's a type of rodent nonetheless and that's usually what snakes eat.

I get your point, but saying the squirrel was *completely* defenseless is wrong. Squirrels can be incredibly dangerous to snakes, and can kill them. This isn’t meant to try and dispute your opinion, but I thought I would just inform you that this is indeed very dangerous to the snakes as well.
On top of that, I would like to add that some snakes refuse to eat already dead food, and must kill it themselves. Besides if he were to get already dead food it would have had to be killed by humans anyway, so what’s the difference? I would say that it’s worth it to keep your pet snake alive.
My emotional side says "oh no, what's wrong with you?! Don't feed him a live squirrel" but my logical and rational side says "this is what happens in the wild kingdom. Who are we to bend the rules of nature".

To all of you who are saying that this is cruel and this is animal abuse, I have something to say. First of all, to you who are saying that the snake is evil because it killed an innocent squirrel, you are only saying that because since the squirrel is fluffy and you think it's "cute". Any dog that ever lived would kill a squirrel in a heartbeat if it had the chance? Does that make them evil? No! They are just trying to please their master. The squirrel had to be alive because if the snake saw a dead animal, most likely it would stay away from it because in nature, most animal die from either being eaten or a disease. If it sees a deal animal lying on the ground, it obviously didn't die from being eaten so the snake is going to assume it died from disease because it doesn't know that it was frozen. Rattlesnake venom is a series of different toxins all of which the rattlesnake creates from its diet. For anybody that doesn't actually own snakes the biggest downside of feeding live is that if the snake isn't hungry right then the food itself gets brave, angry, or hungry and actually starts trying to attack your snake. The only thing worse than a finicky feeding snake is a blind finicky feeding snake that was attacked by its live prey.

A squirrel has way more mass than a rat or mouse. It takes longer for the poison to work.
I will report this video as animal cruelty. It is against the TOS of TH-cam. But its natural? In a natural setting the squirrel would not be trapped in a cage to defend itself. And in fact you see quite a bit of squirrels win a fight vs a snake IN A NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.
He's just feeding his pet snake. I don't think he wants the squirrel to escape or kill his pet.
