I always understood this song as being about my life. For reason unknowable to me out of all three children I was the only one who was physically abused. And how I see him and understand the world is something they will never understand.
I listened to this song a few times, but only now it hits me how well I know the people in it. I grew up with more than a few friends who mutually sort of lost touch and whose lives were put on a prolonged standstill. When you meet up with an old friend like that, it is hard to explain what happened to you, because it feels like not much happened at all, and you know that you changed as a person, but it's hard enough to pin-point those changes to yourself, so it's even harder to share them with others.
I've permanently associated this comment with this song since I read it a few years ago. Very often I'll come back to listen to this song specifically to reflect on the feeling you've described here, and I think about it a lot just generally in my life
I saw some old friends as I came to the city gate They asked me where I'd been of late I hadn't been anywhere but what was I going to say Two hopeful people looking at me that way You and your brother You both escaped the curse You can't comprehend what it's like We stood in the sunlight and they asked me where I'd been Held the gate open, told me to come on in I saw the damp green grass so nice on the other side Couldn't explain myself to them but I tried You and your brother You both escaped the curse You can't comprehend what it's like Ground was dry but giving, the sky was nearly black Saw some old friends when I looked back Remember my old home, haven't forgotten yet What happens on the day when I forget You and your brother You both escaped the curse So you can't comprehend what it's like
This song is so beautiful, it bring me hope with each listen. The soft comforting tone of Rachel's voice, John's beautiful writing, all compile to remind me that each day of my life is this beautiful thing, that I don't ever want to give up on.
@JamesMLeo well he lied! it was there and it was the first show of the tour. i was so happy to be there. i had listened to the album already thanks to NPR and it was a great gift to hear them fretting about never having played their new songs before, really ever! hahaha! they barely rehearsed but they put on a great show. love.
@JamesMLeo i'm not much of a pirate unfortunately for me and i'm not always the most on top of things. i'm holding out hope that there may be a chance that i'll be able to purchase All Externals Deck at their show even though it's 5 days before the official release date - what do you think the chances are?!
Matter how close. I can not possibly feel or think exactly as you have, all I can do,is try to understand, and love you. I know this is an old comment, but I hope my reply finds you well, and if not,I'm here.
This song is about DMT and interdimensional beings/aliens. PLEASE feel free to reply to me if you would like an elaboration. If you've done DMT, just relisten to it and you should get it almost immediately.
@@evanpincus2203 First, I want you to go to erowid (a website) and look up DMT trip reports. You'll notice a theme of complete and utter life changing, awe inspiring information that simply cant be put into words that changes you as a person forever. They say ignorance is bliss, thus, "You and your brother. You both escaped the CURSE. 'Cause you CAN'T COMPREHEND WHAT IT'S LIKE." The rest is a back and forth between him having flashbacks to the DMT experience, and conveying how gobsmacked he is without directly implying it. After that, ENOCH is a book of the bible that, apparently, puts the bible into perspective of what it originally was before the Romans got their hands on it. Enoch is allegedly an alien. This is substantiated by the overwhelming evidence that heaven and hell both used terms meaning cosmos and "the waters" which meant space. So, tell me, why are we as a society now making this connection between aliens, DMT, the true meaning of the bible, and ancient religions that kept these pieces together? Because we were put into the dark, and we are only now seeing the light again. Enoch was an alien. That book is about DMT and guided ascension, thus, could NOT stay in the bible.
@@evanpincus2203 just to clarify, the cosmos and the waters meant what they meant until the bible came along and decided the cosmos means heaven. We went from the sky to something non tangible in this universe. The exact opposite is true.
The joy on his face singing with Rachel makes me believe in hope.

JD's face, everytime Rachel harmonizes with him(1:25, 2:35, etc.) is how I feel about this video.

I saw some old friends as I came to the city gate
They asked me where I'd been of late
I hadn't been anywhere but what was I going to say
Two hopeful people looking at me that way
You and your brother
You both escaped the curse
You can't comprehend what it's like
We stood in the sunlight and they asked me where I'd been
Held the gate open, told me to come on in
I saw the damp green grass so nice on the other side
Couldn't explain myself to them but I tried
You and your brother
You both escaped the curse
You can't comprehend what it's like
Ground was dry but giving, the sky was nearly black
Saw some old friends when I looked back
Remember my old home, haven't forgotten yet
What happens on the day when I forget
You and your brother
You both escaped the curse
So you can't comprehend what it's like
