Reverse Engineering Late Gothic Vaults

Late Gothic vaults from the 15th and 16th century rank amongst the finest masterpieces of architecture. These ambitious, astonishing and sometimes daring constructions were extremely demanding from the structural point of view and particularly challenging in their geometric design. In this research project, we investigate how they were designed and planned from the general concept down to the single element, and which geometric concepts and notions of structural mechanics determined their design and construction - gaining an insight to the information society in the period of transition from late Middle Ages to Early Modern.
