Loose incense is such a wonderful tool for spellwork, meditation, ritual and fragrance; but not a lot of people know what it is, or how to use it.

Scott Cunningham's book, Incense, Oils and Brews is the go to book for making your own loose incense.

Earthsinger100 I just bought this- it will b here Friday & I’m now I feel a bit more excited than I already was, being that you said this & 3 other ppl clearly approved by thumbs upping! Lol so thanks bc I was worried from so many mixed reviews-especially of this author in general tbh!

Earthsinger100 thank you. I’m going to get this then. I love Hearths loose incense but I also want to experiment in blending my own too. My local witchy shop sells a box of herbs, resins, woods etc with a list of their properties and I really want to start putting things together and seeing what happens 👩‍🔬

@@lilithsmedicinalmoon2084 I highly recommend his book on Crystal, Gem and Metal Magic. His Encyclopedia of Herbs is very good. The controversy with him is mostly with his books on Wicca. He was my first pagan author and I still think his work is valuable.

I love what you said about the sand. I use salt personally so when your cauldron starts to get full, you can bless the the salt ash mixture and make black salts

My favorite is The Holy Trinity: Sage/Lavender/Rosemary. Super easy to make. I gather mine and dry them by hanging them up with clothes pins on a string and I grind mine with a coffee grinder, blending in equal parts into one container. It has a very subtle oil to it and it does clump if you pinch them tightly between your fingers.

    Dear Hearth,
I use ground brick for the bottom of my cauldron. It is sometimes referred to as red sand around here. It’s a little hoodoo-ish and supposed to boost the power of the herbs and resins. Just a thought if you would want to try it. 😁

Incense is honesty one of my absolute favourite parts of my personal craft. I would love to see follow-up videos on this regarding the video you mentioned planning here, and I'd love to see how you use it, I find that so helpful!
I have so many favourite ingredients, but I recently came accross guggle resin. I have no idea what it really is, I think it's a type of Frankincense or Myrrh, but omg it's so earthy and gorgeous!!

    • @crocketgsxr6

    As always, thank you, Hearth!

    I recommend two additional videos:
    1) Annie's TH-cam channel MirthandReverence, video titled "Rice Ash Buried Charcoal and Mica Screen Incense." (she makes a correction down below, that the charcoal is from bamboo, not willow).
    2) TH-cam channel Awesome A, video "Burn Loose Incense WITHOUT Charcoal Disks". Little ceramic oil burners and tea lights are nice and cheap.

tips, break the charcoal in half or even quarters usually it's enough for use especially indoors. also you can fill the container with plain clay cat litter, needs to be unscented, nothing added to it. then you sit the charcoal on top, this helps keeping things from overheating. I would never use any glass containers of course, they should be containers meant to burn charcoal for loose incense, a censor meant for that, a cauldron etc. if you don't have kitty litter you can use sand.

What I use is Frankincense resin pieces / powder. It is better than using extremely fine powder as breathing fine powders can be harmful. You can get Frankincense resins in Amazon.
To use them, burn few coconut husks and when the fire dies, put some resin powder over the hot husk pieces.
Another incense i use is called 'dhoop' in Hindi (India). They are made with natural materials and smells amazing.

Hearth, you should write a book. I consider myself very experienced, I’ve been practicing since about 11/12 (I’m 37 now) and my spells have been almost immediate lately however I enjoy supporting my fellow witches and I just love your channel. You have tons of wisdom and I would buy it for sure!!
I make my own oils and herb mixtures also however I would love to try one of your blends, do you sell any of your personal? I’m not trying to convince you to start your own online store (no pressure lol) but IF you did, I think you would be SO successful you’ve got the best energy!

My favourite way to use incense is to use incense sticks, put it on a wooden holder, then I use it either to smudge my room or the area I'm in, or I just keep it in the holder and let it cleanse the space or I use it tom relax or have a better sleep.

Great video. I'm really interested in learning more.... I've used a lot of resins in the past and also purchased some amazing blends from fairyland aromatics who are now in Glastonbury.
I've just bought a load of new resins and gums and I'm researching herbs, flowers, oils and other materials now to start making my own blends. It would be good to learn more about the intention side if things. I am obsessed with the smell of things but it would be great to learn enough to match the smells with the intentions and the energy's, properties and powers of the ingredients.

I make my own " Vision Incense Blend " and my recipe is 8 parts red sandalwood, 2 parts frankincense, 2 parts myrrh, 2 parts copal resin, 1 part star anise pods, and 1 part lavandin flowers. also I recommend sticking to aromatic woods, Incense resins and aromatic flowers because they not only give off the best scent. But they tend to have the most universal amount metaphysical properties meaning they tend to have multiple metaphysical properties per a ingredient.

I have a log burner at home - can I burn loose incense on this or should it only be an outdoor open fire? Thank you Hearth - I love the candle burner loose incense hack! I've only made a few loose incenses before but I love using frankincense resin and a blend of herbs related to my intention - often including things like mugwort, lavender and rose petals. I recently picked up some powdered dragons blood resin so I'm excited to try that in a blend soon as well. Xx

Emily J C F Diamond hi I would check if any of your loose incense mix is a baneful (toxic) herb before burning large amounts on your log burner if it is inside your home. I have a fire pit I use outside & burn loose incense on the logs all the time, it works well. I love using Mugwort too but never burn it inside in large amounts as it can be hallucinogenic.

I do both incense. I make loose incense like your is and I also sell it as a powder. I going down my Herbs, resins, and woods and I add an essential oil and I powder let’s say if it’s a lavender I have my base that I make in bulk of 2 kinds of cedar and 2 types of sandalwood, frankincense and gold seal dragons blood. That’s my most used base. And if I wanna make lavender powdered incense or cone incense I take my lavender buds and I powder them myself. Or if I want cinnamon I’ll do Cassia and sweet cinnamon blend. I can even get pod grade organic herbs already powdered from witch and incense suppliers. And I live in the states. Other then getting cheap unhealthy incense at Walmart I don’t know any witchy shop or vendors who throw a bunch of fillers together w dye and fragrance oils. I don’t know anyone who does that. That’s why ppl get upset and they don’t understand why I sell my incense for so much money. They can get 20 sticks at the dollar store but it’s shit incense filled of cheap chemicals and mine is all natural with expensive ingredients. But that’s how I do loose either like your or powdered and I will be trying cones next.
