It's great hearing Terry's point of view. He was always the silent member of XTC (except for his drums!) and he is filling in the blanks in the XTC story. Thanks very much for posting this interview.
TC was one of the reasons I took up drumming. I'm lucky to be able to play his parts with the XTC tribute band, Fossil Fools. So glad he has done this ProgCast. I had the opportunity to interview him for the TC&I Facebook page back in 2017. I believe Ball & Chain was performed live before it was recorded for English Settlement... though I could be wrong! Thank you for doing this!!!
Terry Chambers! Unlikely legend! English Settlement came out when I was 4 years old and it's been burned into my brain ever since. Terry, along with Stewart Copeland, is probably the reason I became a drummer. Such great rhythms, such a great sound, what a band!! I love all the XTC albums, not a duff one amongst them in my opinon, but the ones from when Terry was in the band will remain the most influential to me.
Great discussion. I think of Andy describing Terry and Colin as “metal kids” in the early days. I can hear Dave, Colin and Andy in the way Terry speaks: Swindon. It’s as distinct as Scouse, Cockney or Brum. Hearing Terry’s pronunciation of the word “tower” makes me realize that Glastonbury Tor includes that word. Andy has said that only Terry Chambers can play the drum parts for ‘Making Plans For Nigel’ because everything is backwards from the normal way. You and Terry discussing Captain Beefheart brought that to mind.
Terry Chambers = absolute bloody legend. He sounds like he could be the local plumber, but apart from the amazing energy of his drumming, he kept XTC grounded and wasn't scared to confront Andy when he thought he was being a bit too arty. Anyone who saw XTC live during the early years will tell you how brilliant they were, and they couldn't have been THAT brilliant without a phenomenal drummer. Andy, Colin, Dave and Terry was the classic XTC line-up. PS. Thank you Gregg for your excellent and knowledgeable discussions with the members of this truly great band.
Wow, as soon as I saw the name Terry Chambers I was really excited to listen to this !! Terry has been a great inspiration to since the first ,XTC album, and had never seen an interview with him. Thanks Greg !!
This is amazing. I’ve never heard a long interview with the legendary Terry Chambers. Excellent job Gregg!!! Also, cats out of the bag: Andy loves Devo & Kraftwerk!! And Terry please bring eX-TC to New York!
I used to love going into the drum room at work (a music school) and blasting the Black Sea in the headphones and jamming along. Those drum parts are a blast!
This was extremely enjoyable to hear! Terry was a huge influence on me back in the early '80's when I first started as a working drummer. Black Sea completely freaked me out and changed my entire approach to drumming. I still listen to XTC on a regular basis 40 years later and consider them to be one of my all-time favorite bands. I was recording an album in Woodstock, NY many years ago and happened to bump into Steve Lillywhite in a local bar (he was working with Dave Matthews Band). We ended up talking about Terry's drumming & drum sounds on Black Sea & Drums & Wires. I was in heaven! Terry- Know that you are loved & respected all over the world and thank you for sharing your talent with all of us! Thanks for your artistic influence which had a lot to do with making me the drummer that I am! I hope Ex TC will visit the States and I can experience you playing live. All the best! ✌❤
What a delight this interview was, Terry was such a massive part of XTC, his powerful drumming was the backbone of there sound and was sadly missed when he left. Can't wait to catch EXTC live soon.
I met Terry many years ago before he left for Oz, still a lovely guy, I love the way he was recalling moments when asked questions. Good luck with EXTC, hope we get to here the music.
Great to hear from you Terry. I hope you will consider doing this interview type malarkey again. And you're not an easy man to pin down for this kind of stuff (as I know) ;) - I wish you much joy and success with EXTC - Hope to catch you guys in London or the south east of the UK. At risk of an old cliche - Thank you for the music TC. And Many thanks Gregg.
When I first heard "Paper & Iron" (off Black Sea) - great song btw, I was so impressed by Terry's percussion and whenever I hear it I think of Terry and his humble, hard working man's approach to playing this song!
So i guess hugh padgham is the next episode. Gregg is getting everybody that was ever involved with xtc, in a couple of months he'll be interviewing roadies even.
Terry is one of my favorite drummers, what a wonderful interview, this is the first interview I’ve seen with him in a long time.

Terry Chambers is an incredible drummer and integral part of early XTC
What a lovely sentiment at 52:46. Thanks for giving Terry his well-deserved props.
