Loved "The Man from UNCLE". David McCallum and a suave Robert Vaughn. They should bring some of these shows back. They're a lot better than most of the crap on TV today.
In one episode, NCIS agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) is asked, "What did Ducky look like when he was younger?" Gibbs's response: "Illya Kuryakin."
I always adored David McCallum as a kid, watching The Man From Uncle. Now that I'm much older, I've seen him on NCIS. He's got great talent. He also has great musical abilities. I hope one day I meet him in person. 💥💥.
I never knew I would til I met him after he did 2 plays in Atlanta-'76 and '78. He's such a gentleman too! I'm glad I did when I could: never knew he'd be still acting in his late 80s-some never got the chance. Only Stefanie Powers is still alive of the immediate team.
My older sister liked;the Ilya Kuryakin character on;The man from Uncle, back in the late ⏰ 1960”s.I,of course, would not remember this show,as I was too young to remember this! You can’t win them all,I guess!
Lots of fond memories from this show. Like " you spray I spray we all go to hiccup heaven" and when the evil woman fell down the elevator shaft and only broke her arms and legs instead of dying. And the electrified fence And when they guest starred on Please Don't Eat the Daisies
And ya gotta love Ilya's line in the 3rd season, The Thor Affair, at about 17-18 minutes in.... Napoleon (to pretty girl): "Believe me, we're only interested in your tooth." Illya: "And nothing but the tooth."
David McCallum is so dreamy. He's attractive in a very distinct way that sets him apart from all the other Hollywood heartthrobs. Illya is such a great character too. :)
It looks and sounds like Miriam Hopkins, except that I only remember seeing her as a blonde. The distinctive accent certainly fits her style as she was a ham. But an adorable one.
In a "Marcus Welby, MD" episode, David's chr.-a teacher-leans over to retrieve a letter and wrenches his shoulder and/or back. Someone asks him if he needs a dr. He tells her "I need a locksmith "
+Ern Gerardo Sigh. But Georgia isn't in the Ukraine. It borders Russia and Turkey. Or is it like Indiana University and California University in Pennsylvania?
Many russian agents go through intense language courses to get rid of their accents to help blend it. It makes sense that he would sound more british or american. Although I’m sure it had more to do that accent coaches were much harder to come by during the cold war.
I think when David became so popular and featured in more episodes than was previously planned, they made it easier on him as an actor by not making him have to put on a Russian accent all the time. I also think they added to the character's backstory at some point, making him educated at Cambridge, so a British accent makes sense; also possibly explains why he is whistling 'Rule Britannia' in one of these clips ;)
@@phyllishammond9886 It was wrong!Wrong height! Wrong attitude, etc.! They even got Napoleon wrong. Shorter than Illya? Blue eyes,? I think even David was disappointed! I know I was!
UNCLE went to color and turned to crap, whereas in B & w it was damn good. they also kept changing the theme song, which was truly outstanding in season 1, and then it too eventually turned to fluff techno campy crap. Note, the Sopranos NEVER messed with its opening theme song. UNCLE is a great TV lesson in how to turn gold into lead.
Londonrainwaters In the series it seems that Robert Vaughn was always playing the role of the womanizer, but I get impression that both on and off screen the ladies like Illya more.
+SagesseNoir Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I'm not saying Vaughn wasn't very popular too, but I think that absolute fan hysteria was only on McCallum's side ;)
Oh yeah, both of them were popular as partners. But it was Illya that all the young girls fancied. And the fact that Illya wasn't a womanizer made him even more mysterious and attractive.

David's past retirement age-88. He wants to spend time with his family. Can't say I blame him. He's worked so hard all his life and has received less recognition than actors who've done less than he has (Emmy, Star on Walk on Hollywood, marriage-54 years, etc.), but he's humble and satisfied.

Can't say I blame guys for liking him-I liked Helen Hayes and Stefanie Powers, but that didn't make me gay-I 'm just tired of Hollywood making characters gay just to make the gay community happy. Isn't that what they did to "Starsky and Hutch" in the movie version? I've seen K/S fanzines making Kirk and Spock gay so I wonder if the movie version will do this too. Suppose people in the disabled community decided to explain Illya's shyness by saying he had Asperger's Syndrome? (not likely). I have a sister who's a lesbian and even she doesn't like folks changing a character's profile just to fit some agenda. Otherwise, if they make Bond black, Hollywood can remake "Amen" all white.
