  • Sequence from the Rock & Rule animated feature film produced by Nelvana and released in the mid 1980s.
This is the first sequence we get to see Mok - the maniacal villain in the film. He's a "big" rock star with an even bigger ego who uses all sorts of trickery to create the illusion he's something he's not - a magic man!
This was done as traditional pre-computer cel-animation (early 1980s). All the effects were done optically with some help from Industrial Light and Magic where just off doing the first Star Wars movie at the time.
Animation layouts and posing by Verne Andru.
From Nelvana's animated feature "Rock & Rule." Used by permission.

About me - An award-winning designer, I'm best known for my illustration, animation and directing work with some of the best including Captain Canuck, Universal Studios, Marvel, Ikea and Nelvana's animated cult-classic "Rock & Rule." In addition to teaching comic book production and animation at the prestigious Vancouver Film School, I created the "Simply Accounting" name, designed Pigtronix's flagship musical effects pedal and launched both into successful brands. Driven to draw, I'm currently working on new editions of the Captain Cannabis comic book series I started back in the seventies. A unique mix of science fiction, dark comedy and gritty realism, the story is fun with great characters adventuring in an inspired universe told in what's been described as a truly original voice.

Your wonderings are correct. Mok was indeed based on Mik who was originally going to do the Mok music as well. Then he went out on his solo tour and dropped out. Next up was to be David Bowie, but he backed out once his "Scary Monsters" album took off. We went with Lou Reed for the music and Don Francs for the voice - which was an excellent pairing - but the character design was so far along by that point (and working great) that the Mik look stuck.

      Mok isn't really Mok.
Mok is really the demon from the finale.
during a first attempt to with trying to summon the demon, without finding "a special voice". the real "Mok" failed and the spirit of the demon possessed his body while the demon's body was sent back to the other dimension.
so for the past few years Mok has been trying to properly open the portal to the other dimension so that he could re summon his body and become one with it again and wreck havoc on the world.
also his entrance here and all that fancy stage magic/illusions he uses? it isn't technology, it's Mok's demonic powers, he just says it's all lights and effects.

It’s called Rock and Rule! It’s a wild ride if you decide to check it out. It’s by a Canadian animation studio who was trying to make a really well done adult animation project. It’s features lots of famous 80s rock singers and it’s like a dystopian musical of sorts. It may not be the best movie ever but I personally love it for it’s campiness haha

I honestly think he is the hero of this whole movie. He was literally the only one who was like, "Hey, Mok kidnapped our bandmate and friend, let's go rescue her!" And meanwhile, OMAR, her BOYFRIEND, is just whining with insecurity about how Angel just WANTS to be up there with Mok, and abandoned them. No trust really, till the very end. Meanwhile, every time they get thrown back, Dizzy gets back up and tries again, drives a hovercar into a SERIOUS security door at the end... *sigh* I love this movie enough to understand what's wrong with it lol...

I mean I really can't disagree. It's such a great entrance because you KNOW he's sketchy as fuck but you can believe how some of the others would trust him more easily and be awed by him. There's so much communication in his mannerisms as well, he's such an expressive character and he's a JOY to watch in motion! Plus the voice casting for both speech and singing were perfection. Definitely one of my favorite villain intros and certainly one of the best. Lots of "show don't tell" on display.

I adore the attention to detail with his different fashion styles in the movie so much. I noticed it's mostly uncommon to see characters in animation switch up their clothing once in a while, with Totally Spies as one of the exceptions coming off the top of my head. So to see Mok in different outfits even if it's only for a few seconds of screentime is delightful. If I was better articulated and knew the right words to say, I might have even made a video essay analyzing Mok's outfits. But alas, I'll just stick to ogling and being in awe of this flamboyant and very terrifying villain.

I have a copy of the film taped off CBC during the early 90s and the dialog is exactly what is on this clip. It's a bad joke about the shlepper brothers being dogs whereas Omar etc. are rats. There may have been multiple dialog takes done during the audio sessions - as is usually the case - but I've never heard those words on anything final. I did the layouts for this (working from the storyboards) and don't concur with this myth that's grown up around this line of dialog.

No one really has an arc in the film, even Angel doesn't really change at all from the beginning to the end. Nobody learns anything, except maybe Omar and Zip, the former happens instantaneous and off screen, and the latter winds up dead.
