I loved this movie, along with Signs. The characters, the storytelling, and James Newton Howard's incredible music. People can critique these movies all they want but I was captivated from start to finish by both. They aren't your typical "thriller" or "horror" movies.
This film completely changed my life from having one-night stands and drinking loads...I just connected with the ethical themes and the music is the best of all his films...The reflections on suffering are amazing I think the rocking chair symbolises grief and it is interesting how Ivy makes the crucixion stance before Noah falls in the pit....I showed it to my GCSE RE group and they loved it
One of my all time favourite films.Cast, music, script, direction, everything excellent.Actually the film makes perfect sense if you pay attention. The security guy is indeed shocked,I don't see him acting cool and he is helpful because of the kind behavior of Ivy. He or anyone else has no business interfering or entering this land since it's private. What should he do?Arrest her?And the film was amazing exactly because it didn't have a cliché horror ending but something different that we had never seen before. Why does everything have to be labeled "horror" or "drama" or anything else? This film has everything.
Indeed the small touches. The subtle disbelief on his face when she shyly tells him her name, "Ivy.....Ivy Elizabeth Walker"----while his uniformed is tattooed with "Walker Preserve" insignias....
It was confusing at first (thought it was a horror) but by halfway, it turns into a meaningful and beautifully written story. The soundtrack is simply spectacular and the characters are intriguing and interesting as the story itself. Escapism and innocence is the meaning and I can't help fathom how someone can write such a masterpiece. I agree with ainiel555
I've seen this movie at least four times and just can't get enough of it. The music is one of the reasons, why I love it so much. If you get it, you get it and if you don't, you don't. but in my opinion, this is the best horror movie I've ever seen.
It's one of my all-time favorite films. I saw it on back-to-back nights when it first came out, and was so moved by the woodsy setting, the history, the spookiness, the music, and the message of hope and innocence.
Very beautiful film, and the music is just something else entirely. I just feel disappointed they sold this as a thriller. The trailers were cool and promised something scary, but watching the film I didn't like it the first time because I was expecting the thrill from the trailer. However, after watching it again (and again!) I can't get over just how beautiful a movie it is. It is a profound message about love and innocence. I have seen many movies and am a bit of a geek, but seldom have I seen a better cast of actors come together and deliver such a powerful performance. William Hurt I take my hat off to you!
Indeed. There's a few people here who think the film is a cold interpretation of religious manipulation. While the elders created a cover and lied, they did so to protect their children's innocence from a world that so easily takes it away. That was the whole point. You look at their lives, and indeed they've retained something special, innocent and lovely in their families. Bad things still happen (such as the murder), but there was a lot to like as well.
Exactly right. But is our definition of the "truth" defined by the cruelty of this world? At the end of the day, the elders of the village had forsaken money and the corruption it brings. It had nothing to do with religious manipulation but ridding such a world from their children. Why is that wrong? Surely our view of the world is just that, "our" view. It isn't what is necessarily true, but rather one that is created for us, and one which we choose to go along with. The elders of the village sought to do away with such a world, and bring their children up in a society that was about right values and justice.
james newton howard is a god, a genius, on earth to give a sens to the word "music". i would give anything to meet him and just watch him composing :-)
No, the film doesn't hold up logically...but maybe that isn't what's important. I feel like everyone who had the movie ruined by base logistics, totally missed all of the points it explored. Innocence, love, heartbreak, sacrifice, illusions, modernism, etc. I also feel that's why the music was so masterful. There is no "twist" in it. It just tells its story.
Beautiful. I think a lot of the people who didn't like this film were disappointed because it was advertised as a horror & it turned into more of a psychological drama. I love it, it's very clever & beautiful & the first time I saw it I was terrified.
I think this score is just so beautifully written Howard is just amazing at what he does, he really is a legend! It fits so well with the film and really gets the audience to feel the emotion of what the film is all about... I think the film itself was brilliant, so cleverely thought through, it is a film we can easily believe in to be true - thank you for putting this up :)
This song reminds me of driving from Cincinnati to Cleveland every Christmas to see my grandparents. The closer we got to Cleveland, the more it would snow!
el soundtrack es demasiado bueno me encanta.....excelente el trabajo de James Newton...es una melodia triste, meláncolica, es impresionante lo que puede hacer la musica....gran trabajo....
James Newton Howard is definitely among the two greatest composers I have ever known. Up there with Morricone. Have you listened to Newton's scores on the King Kong-remake?
Saw the movie yesterday .....after waiting all these years....I thought it was horror/twist but I got a touching love story and good drama......good movie.
I don't listen to this soundtrack much anymore, but at times I still need to. I listen to it if I need to escape my disappointment with the world. I suppose the real world has never been entirely good enough. In that respect, thank God we have our imaginations to flee into. "Don't say I'm out of touch with this rampant chaos, your reality I know well what lies beyond my sleeping refuge The nightmare that I built my own world to escape." - Amy Lee
The movie touches me..it blows my soul away and people expected a horrormovie,so I did,but the majority doesn't like it afterwards, since it is no horrormovie, the minority instead, where I myself belong to,loves it,exactly BECAUSE it is no horrormovie..Night told such a great story underlined with a dammit wonderful metaphoric and the most wonderful score ever existed. My praise,mr. Shyamalan, never seen such a heartmelting story!
@StingerRecords I actually haven't met someone who's seen the village and disliked it! But yeah I agree with you and I personally loved it. It was so eerie, beautiful, so gripping, one of my all time favourites, and the Howard soundtrack is magnificent.
I know the Soundtrack for the movie was voted best in 2004, but the movie itself was also the best thing that happened that year, especially when I think of how many times I've seen it since...compared to others.
This movie actually has intelligence behind it. Instead of just blood and gore and sex. It's not just a scary movie, it's a love story. The movie also makes you think. Instead of just telling you what happens, you have to figure it out for yourself.
Just think about it, isn't this the best horror movie you have seen 0_0... ? What you can't see is much more scary than what you can see. And I really didn't expect the ending ....
@StingerRecords I think part of the problem, outside of our thrill seeking culture, is the fact is wasn't really advertised properly. It was billed as this sitting on the edge of your seat in fear thriller when it really is a deeper film than that. I think it would be more positively viewed today if they had advertised it correctly.
@StingerRecords I didn't care iwhat genre they said the film should be. It is just how powerfull and strong the pictures were... the actors and of course the music. It LOVED the movie for being different than any other film I had seen before... and I still do.

A beautiful story about seeking simplicity in life. And the score for this is perfect.
Bryce Dallas Howard was amazing in this! The way she gulped in fear is so real!

his name is m. night. and this is not his only masterpiece.
So well put.
The music is so beautiful it makes my heart cry. Just beautiful.
this music not only speaks to the soul but awakens it with grace and beauty.
I've seen this movie at least four times and just can't get enough of it. The music is one of the reasons, why I love it so much.

All of this, is a masterpiece. Movie, actors, music, story, the real sadness inside the fiction
Wow...my heart just felt like it flew across the ocean...amazing!
I love this music so much ^^ the movie is beautiful
Beautiful I wished people like this song still existed

Matthew Penrose Agree. Watching it the first time was weird. But now after the second time, a very underrated film :/

+Matthew Penrose yes i also agree with you. sound track is never leave my heart
+Matthew Penrose Maybe in the future, like 20 years from now, Shyamalan's movies will be better appreciated.

If I had a choice my friends...I would choose to live in the village forever...
Me too
It's so cool and slightly terrifying that movie can be so good that you start to agree with the 'villians' of the story.
Give me a simpler life? Yep... I'd take it, too.
Despite the hot redhead is already in a relationship? I would be bothered honestly.
My go to music when I feel lonely Feel it talks to me and says 'I know..I will make you feel better..here goes.." 🙂
god bless you

I love 5.30 because it brings back images of the film and also of The Happening. :)
Yeah, I thought about it, too!
I know the Soundtrack for the movie was voted best in 2004, but the movie itself was also the best thing that happened that year, especially when I think of how many times I've seen it since...compared to others.
People who hate this movie don't appreciate music
i cried!
Haunting.
I think of it more as a "Tale of the Unexpected" a bit like the television series of the 70's only in cinemascope with a truly memorable score.
c beau et le film est génial
This movie actually has intelligence behind it. Instead of just blood and gore and sex. It's not just a scary movie, it's a love story. The movie also makes you think. Instead of just telling you what happens, you have to figure it out for yourself.
nagyon szep
suono sublime..
Thumbs up if your listening to this in 2012!
Just think about it, isn't this the best horror movie you have seen 0_0... ? What you can't see is much more scary than what you can see. And I really didn't expect the ending ....
Hermoso
I don't know why so many people hat this movie, I thought it was one of the best movies ever.
