"The story behind the love song Jarabi: Most Kora songs are very formal and connected with some piece of history and cultural root of Mende tradition; Jarabi is an exception. However, Jarabi (meaning "Beloved"), is among the most popular of Kora songs. Originally composed shortly after the independence of the Mali Federation -- now divided as Senegal, Gambia and Mali -- Jarabi was meant to capture the new national spirit of renaissance. The government supported a return to traditional arts and cultural expressions of the many people of the region. In this new environment, Jarabi was born, has become and remains the single most popular Kora piece to date. When the French were forced to leave they offered Mali the option of remaining a common wealth under the French system; the people, so vexed by the brutality of French occupation, wanted only complete independence. Infuriated, Charles Du Gaulle order the country stripped of everything. Buildings were destroyed and infrastructure was rent a sunder. The people found themselves with far less than what they had before colonization and have been recovering ever sense. Composed in this time, Jarabi is a love song which, like most African love songs from this period, is intended as a metaphor for the love of the country, it's culture, and it's people. During colonial times, such love songs would be infused with messages through metaphors meant to enjoin the beleaguered with hope and resolve."
Thx for the comment. However I would correct some information. In 1958 , when France asked the west African countries if they wanted to remain in the French common wealth , the only country who said NO was GUINEA led by SÉKOU TOURE. the other countries including current day Mali said YES . And Mali became independent in 1960 , 2 years after GUINEA . Also I read stories of De Gaulle being infuriated and building being destroyed by the French but there were stories about Guinea.but I dont know maybe the same happen in Mali in 1960... But I had a feeling that at that time, the French had accepted the situation...
This piece brings such a deep sense of calm and peace. The soft sounds and unique atmosphere of the music take you on a journey to another world. Thank you for this beautiful and incredible work.
What a legend, i just heard his sons cover and that introduced me to the original, that's a great dad right there- passed the music and talent onto his son
He is not a blues player. And absolutely hated people calling his music that. He said his music is older than all American music and European classical music.
I’ve watched this probably a thousand times and I’m always so immersed in the oneness of it. I was watching this a minute ago and suddenly trying to figure out how he was making it sound like a bass and lead guitar at once. Somehow just coming to the grand realization about the wholeness these three blessed us with, effortlessly. Like being carried down a sunny stream~~~~❤️
The African guitarists use a different tuning from westerns. Its derived from how they tune their traditional instruments. There is often at least one string meant only for deep bass notes. Even the Kora(harp) and Kalimba/Mbira(thumb piano) is tuned like that, literally turning them into a one man orchestra.
No doubt Ali Farka Touré is exceptionally good. One ccrrection needs to be made to the information given by World Circuit Records. Niafunké is not in the north of Mali, it is in the centre.
vraiment répose en paix! je viens juste de te connaître et si je me rends compte que tu ne vie plus vraiment ça me fait très mal au coeur mais c'est dieu qui a voulu! que ton âme repose en paix papa Aly Fraka.
Fcking Emperor is what he is. Was. Is. Rules over time and life and death and I will be sure to meet him when the time is right. Thanks for the upload.
Could anybody help me understand the lyrics?? I've loved this tune and revered this master for ages, but I want to know what he is trying to convey. Thank you.
think it about a boy declaring his love, but the girls father, mother and friends tell her not to marry him as he has nothing. closing line of chorus "do not be angry, do not be sad because of love.

If blues is a flower, this is the seed.
So beautifully fluid.
Shrunken Head man i respect your seeing blues as a flower. But blues is anything but a flower. It a tobacco plant.
Well put.
2020 Still listening to this great bluesy African gem! 💙
The best thing is that you will listen to this as long you can remember.
2022😁👍

Ali is, without a shred of doubt, the greatest blues guitarist on the continent. May he continue to rest in peace. The world misses him.
