    Jeff, I just came accross this vid, nice job, I got a lot of use out of that eight track and I copied a lot of music from vinyl and other eight tracks. I loved that I could make my own tapes and play them in my '72 Chevelle player. I always had Beatels or Beach Boys playing. BTW, that was a high end unit, no one had one like it. It originally cost a lot, I dont think anyone would believe how much so I wil keep it to myself. Thanks for saving it. John😁

      I do remember you telling me that story and getting it from the shop on Locust Street but man it still playing and sounding fantastic!
      It was worth every Penny you spent for it, try to get something to last 45 years that you buy now!

    This is awesome Jeff. Interesting bit of Kisstory, the beginning of Back in the New York Groove, Ace had mentioned that to get the 'Stomping' effect, they stomped on boxes to obtain that sound. I had always wondered for decades how they created that awesome sound.
    Also, if you get a chance to listen to Ace Frehley solo 78' 8-track through some vintage original 70's pillow clunky headphones it's certainly a brand new listening experience. For the very short time I had my first second hand pair in '89 with my first Lloyd's 8-track player nothing could compare to the sound. I didn't want anything modern afterwards unless it was a pair of those thin metal over-the- ear headphones that went to my Walkman. Your console is awesome! You have everything a person could ever need to kick back and enjoy. 😊 I loved this video. 👍

      Oh I know very well how much of a difference with vintage headphones, I owned a pair from Radio Shack for the longest time before they broke. I tried replacing them but nothing ever really came close. Interesting insight on the stomping, not sure if I ever heard that story so thanks for sharing that one !

    LOL epic intro!! Man when I'm into repair and servicing equipment, I just want to get the job done and disregard getting out the camera so I can get in, get out and clean up. Thanks for showing us under the hood, I love the vintage stuff. Man, what a console! The velvet curtain behind the lattice, what's not to love?

      Hey there Corey,
      Thanks so much for watching and the kind words ! Glad you enjoyed the intro buddy and I definitely know what you mean about getting the job done so you can get back to enjoy playing the gear versus working on it. I removed the receiver and decided to record the experience since I haven’t done a Kiss or 8-track related video in several months so I just figured I would take advantage of the mishap. You know when life gives you lemons 🍋 make lemon beer... or something like that...Lol . Thanks again for the kind words and support and yes what’s not to love when it comes to vintage consoles and all it’s unique quality’s.
      Take care and talk soon.~ Jeff

    Jeff, great to see this video tonight. You sure hit the nail on the head when you mentioned you might need to be a handyman if you get into 8-tracks (or any other vintage stereo equipment). It seems that not only the players need cleaning, lubing, new belts and TLC, but hopefully the capacitors and diodes aren't bad, as well as numerous other things. The tapes most all need to be rebuilt as well. I love the format and I thank you for re-igniting my flame and passion for 8-tracks. Good to see you figured this problem out relatively quickly and it was a simple fix. Take care and rock on!!! Billy-

      Hey Billy,
      Wonderful to hear from you buddy! Absolutely! This format of music is definitely a labor of love, like you said a little TLC and focus on the important things with 8- track players and tapes and then just sit back with a beer and enjoy. Only an 8-track Collector can really understand and get the enjoyment from this endless analog loop format ! Thanks so much for watching and the awesome comment Billy, enjoy the rest of your evening and the weekend!

    Hey Jeff,
    Good to see you. Nice way to share Ace Frehley songs from your quickly repaired 8 track player. Now, I feel really bad about not replacing my tone arm on my son's turntable. Boy, do I procrastinate when I procrastinate; almost a year. :( Anyways, it is cool to see a handyman at work. It would take very discipline person to keep such an antique in a tip-top shape for all these years. I think my problem is that I always start from left to right instead of right to left. The rule is once you empty the glass you have to refill it before you can start your project. Rule is rule. I just need to figure out how to start from right. LOL. Again good seeing you at work. Cool Video! Take care and talk to you soon. ~NammaN~

      JOAMON
      Hey NammaN great to hear from you so quickly! Well you know what they say my friend...IF ITS NOT BROKE, DON’T FIX IT. So if that tone arm is still working then I guess it’s not really broken, so don’t beat yourself up over being a procrastinator when your just waiting for the ideal time to start the project.
      Unfortunately in my case this particular tape player needed some immediate attention, I don’t like having things that are supposed to work... and don’t! Lol
      Besides I think I remember watching you tear down a computer and rebuild it from top to bottom and front to back along with a sketch a day for the whole month of October just to name a few ... now that’s discipline, right. Thanks so much for the positive feedback buddy and the continued support, always a pleasure on this end hearing from you! Enjoy your weekend, fill that glass up and show that tone arm you mean business... and btw don’t forget to record it too...lol.
      Take care and talk soon. ~ Jeff

    Love your intro!! Thanks for the video- I have a MGA Model SA-82 Tape/Receiver that won't play tapes- need to fix it before selling it on eBay. I like to know what to look for before just ripping stuff apart. Mine is doing the same thing- so if it's not the belt I know what else to look for!

      Sounds like a great unit, was it yours or did you pick it up second hand?
      Some of them also have a fuse in them to protect the the unit that also may be a possibility if it’s not the switch or the belt like you said. Best of luck with getting the player to work...I’d love to hear back from you once you find the problem and let me know how you make out with it!

    I got to say right off the bat that I dig seeing some of your classic equipment. A 72 Channel Master receiver with an 8-track player/recorder is vintage elegance. I love how you zoomed in the manufacturers date on the back of the unit. I never attempted taking the equipment apart when I was younger. But as I got older I started gaining more confidence and I taught myself a few tricks. But nothing like the levels that you are doing here. "New York Groove' is a great song. May be my fave Frehley solo song.
    Quick question Jeff: Did you remove the two out of the four screws on the back bottom part of the arm so you could show how that arm piece worked? Or did they fall out?
    Another job well done. Is there any audio components that you would not feel comfortable taking apart for fixing? Way to go Jeff. It sounds great~

      Good morning Rob! Great to hear back from you in a second comment and such a fantastic one to boot. Vintage Elegance hmmm.... where were you when I was thinking of a title for this video...LoL? So glad you enjoyed seeing the vintage gear up close and glad to hear you also enjoy taking things apart to see what makes them tick, or in this case go around! Yes I have to agree with you New York Groove is quite the single when it comes to describing Ace and his solo works for sure or the band for that matter . To answer your question on the switch removal I needed to remove the two holding down the switch so it can be seen a little better, the two on the side however were the ones that loosened up and was causing the switch to rock up and down instead of the arm lifting independently to make contact with the switch... all good! I wonder how many times that arm and switch had to work together since 1972 to play music for people to enjoy. 😉 Thanks so much for watching and all your very kind words in your comment, I always appreciate hearing from you buddy and look forward to so many more. Hopefully despite the cold your weekend is off to a amazing start and lots of great things planned for it.
      Take care my friend and hopefully get a chance to talk to you again real soon !

    If your tape gets eaten up or cut apart by the 8-track tape player could it be the switch or could it also be that the player might need cleaning so that the switch could change to the next track-I’ve had about two tapes eaten up by my vintage Sears 8-track player(they were blank recording tapes, btw)

    • @JefferyRusnock
      @JefferyRusnock  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello!
      It’s always frustrating when a favorite tape gets tangled in the player.
      Unfortunately it’s not a switch problem it’s usually caused by either a dirty capstan which is what sits against the tape and drives the tape and if dirty it will cause the tape to wrap around it. The second common thing is the pressure pad in the cartridge that is right on top center and keeps the tape against the playing head and the sensor looking for the splicing foil tape to switch the tracks. When that pressure pad foam fails that tape will wander in the machine as the tape plays and sounds horrible including double tracking will occur.

    I just picked up a 8 track Craig home stereo and unfortunately it won't change tracks. Any Ideas?

    • @JefferyRusnock
      @JefferyRusnock  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dennis!
      congrats on the pickup my friend! The most common trouble with these guys from sitting is the belts which doesn’t sound like it’s your problem if it plays, the other is the solenoid that changes the head height. They tend to freeze up from not using them for long periods of time, If it clicks but won’t change the solenoid may need help or a good cleanup. If you can open the unit and see if parts fell off or if anything is going on with the track selector being pushed you may be able narrow down the area and problem a little bit . If you don’t hear a click when you push the selector button it may be a bad solenoid itself but a loose wire can’t be ruled out either. Please keep in touch and let me know how you make out!
      Take care ~ Jeff

      Helmet Digy
      Hey there Bill,
      How’s it been going for you buddy? These old units are pretty bad ass indeed, that is as long as they actually work and don’t just take up room that collects dust and clutter... LoL! If you don’t mind me asking did the one you saw in the thrift store work and what kind of price were they asking for it, just curious.
      Yes I did replace the receiver which is the one you saw in this video, the original German unit was totally shot and nothing would work due to decades of not being used. After a few months of cleanup and tracking down turntable parts and repair to the original 8-track player all is good now, the little light that comes on when the door opens for the turntable was a project to track down as well since Germany bulbs have a different screw in base for them... who knew...LoL. The Ace solo album is definitely pretty amazing and I’m not surprised to hear it was huge in your life.
      Thanks so much for watching buddy and always apleasure hearing from you again!

    Jeff, loving all your 8 track videos!!! I’m just getting into 8 tracks and I found a basic solid state at a music store for real cheap and bought it. It was working ok accept for cross-talk and this particular model didn’t have a head adjustment access hole so I had to take it apart. I fixed the cross-talk and figured I’d clean the head while I had it opened. When I put it back together the player now has a very loud crackling/static sound. I used 70% ethyl alcohol to clean the head instead of the 91-99% isopropyl that is recommended. Did I just ruin the head because of this or do you think something else happened between when it worked and after I had opened it up?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Have a great weekend!!! JBG.

      Hey John how is it going brother?
      I appreciate you watching and all your kind words!
      Sounds love you got quite a deal on your player, I don’t think that you did any damage to the head as I used similar cleaning methods including even window cleaner in a pinch without any problems to the playing head. Not sure where you could have picked up the static noise from but I believe it is just a coincidence from the cleaning.
      It’s been a few days since your comment and you possibly and figured you have it out by now. Please keep in touch and keep me updated on this if you don’t mind, I would love to hear what you find.

    is that unisonic 8 track player part of a console? I have one i got at a yard sale it has red and blue loose wires with no attachments and the power supply seems to be spliced together. is mine useable at all? thanks

    • @JefferyRusnock
      @JefferyRusnock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Eric,
      To answer your question... yes on both counts! The description of your 8-track player is exactly what my player looks like right down to the color of wires and yes it is part of this original console unit . I know that for a fact because the person who originally purchased it gave it to me. The original receiver that powered the 8-track player was beyond repair so I swapped it out for the receiver you see in this video to play the Unisonic player. I put RCA plugs on the red and blue wires and plug into the speaker out of the receiver and a simple outlet power end at the local hardware store will take care of the power cord and as long as the unit is operational it should play if you have a receiver to play it through since you need a volume control for it.
      Good luck with getting it working and if you have any questions at all don’t hesitate to get in touch with me, I’ll be happy to help if I can!

    • @JefferyRusnock
      @JefferyRusnock  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It usually is because of the wrong size belt was used on it but most players have a small screw adjustment in the circuit board if you fallow the motor wires you should see it and will change the speed of the motor, a very slight adjustment is all it takes.
