This is so iconic bc Epik High debuted in 2003, they LITERAlly helped the hip hop/rap genre become popular in SKorea, and now kpop take so much inspiration in hip hop. The industry wouldnt be the same without them, they are the reallest. AND CL being in the song.... she and 2ne1 changed so much the industry, especially for girls. So this song is doing nothing more than stating facts

As much as Epik high paved the way for artists, they also had an impact on Korean censorship. Epik High used to get banned from media due to their lyrics on government, religion, and mental health. Now it’s much more lax to talk on those subjects on not just songs but anywhere publicly. They pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in the eyes of the people.

Melon in Zico's line is said to refer to the Melon music charts in S.Korea he came back after 1 year and swallowed the melon till its last peel, meaning he broke the charts and topped em all with a perfect-all-kill
i remember he had the all kill, but he's pretty much saying he didn't just win an award (taking a bite) he did everything he could with the melon charts (eating it all to the peel) -- aaahhh that's clean!

Just so you know, the second rapper is called Mithra and before starting his career as a rapper, he actually was a poet. He also used to be part of an underground rap crew before joining Epik High and his flow is freaking insane. He's super talented. And yes, DJ Tukutz (the guy with the glasses) is in charge of making the beats while Tablo & Mithra write Lyrics. They are completly self produced and do everything on their own.

I loved this, Epik high really does have such a unique style, and Cl's Stage presence is no joke. Whenever I listen to Zicos lyrics it is so meaningful the way him and tablo have such a way with words are why they are some of my favorite khiphop artists

if i remember correctly, yoongi said one of the songs that got him into rap/inspired him to be a rapper was fly by epik high. i don't know if you know this but yoongi and tablo are actually close now and yoongi produced a song on their last project. i highly recommend checking their albums out.

Think Zico meant that when he left Block B and the agency to start his own, people saying it was the end for him. Since then he went on to release 2 albums and 2 hit singles. Anysong and Summer Hate recently won song of the month for their respective charting months at the Golden Disk Awards, for example.

The "I paved the way for everyone paving the way" and Tablo's line from "In Self Defense" (from this album ft changmo, nucksal, and woo wonjae, it's fire!!) "name a fuckin' rapper we ain't influenced" are my favorite lines,,,,, seriously gave me chills, he's speaking the truth. not sure if other commenters have mentioned but suga has named epik high's "fly" as one of the songs that inspired him to start rapping. they've name dropped epik high quite a few times in their lyrics as "sunbaes" they really respect and have also sampled epik high's stuff for their earlier albums as well. tablo like rm was an incredibly poet and writer (he's published a book of short stories) and both of them have a very similar poetic lyricism. this is just a random fact but tablo mentioned that rm came over his place to hang out once and tablo's manager had to drive rm home because either rm or tablo could drive lmao

If you want to go really deep into the history they are not lying about legends and paving the way. BTS themselves were partially inspired by Epik High. In case you didn’t know, Epik High has a “map the soul” era which is in line with BTS’s map of the soul 😉 To be fair Jungian psychology is a common source of inspiration, but yeah 😁 They are friends now~~ 💜
In general I think both groups have a lot of overlap in musical philosophy~ love them so much 💜💜💜
Also the sample used in intro Skool Luv affair & outro ego was originally used in Epik high's first albums intro. So there's definitely an ode there

the term paved the way wasn't even used in kpop before bts and by paved the way we mean to the WEST. We don't say bts created kpop or some shit. Kpop isn't a unique genre and took so much from black people itself but that's another discussion.

Wasn’t expecting it to be that fast-
Love that CL is coming in surrounded by roses and dressed like an angel of death. Makes me think of the poem Sunday Morning with the line, "Death is the mother of beauty". And all those short angled rooms looking like 6 ft under/graves. Seriously killed it with the imagery in this one.
This is basically Born Hater 2.0. The iconic bathroom from born hater is even used here too. And the direction of the mv reminded me of bh too. This song will surely go down in history like Born Hater did 🔥💯
Tablo is really a brilliant lyricist and musician and its an accumulation of talent, years of experience and lots of bs he went through in life, MAD RESPECT FOR THE GUY 🙌 and ofcourse Zico and CL too 💯💯

BTS has mentioned Epik High, Tiger JK and Dynamic Duo as their inspiration multiple times in many songs! (Hip Hop Phile, Second Grade, Road/Path, etc.) and all of them have collaborated with the BTS rapline and are all close friends so it's just amazing to see industry ROYALTIES interacting with one another! Yoongi and Joon are also big CL fans and CL herself has mentioned how impactful BTS is and basically this is a circle of A-class artists saying fuck you to anyone who underestimates their significance to the music game now in SK. Love to see it ☝🏽😌
Also Eternal Sunshine was produced by Yoongi on Epik High's last album so you should check that out! And Tablo who produced Song Request by the renowned singer Lee Sora suggested that Yoongi rap on the track. Lee Sora gave the first ever rap feature of her discography to Yoongi that way!! Basically it's just a big family lmfao

Many artists in kpop in this new generation are actually huge fans on Epik High and look up to them. Epik High quite literally paved the way for these future artists in kpop who are currently paving the way. Members of kpop such as Suga and RM idolize Epik High when they were trainees and even now when they are idols

I've been following Epik High since 2007 when they released the album Remapping the Human Soul. Their songs Fan and Love Love Love stirred South Korean rap to the more mainstream, less underground audience, mainly due to Tablo's literary approach to his rap lyrics. Shoebox - which was released in 2014 - is still one of my favorite albums ever.
I totally agree that they are legendary and they rightfully can say that they have paved the way for many other artists *no matter which way you interpret it*. I'm just excited that they are still putting out awesome music.

bts, especially the rapline, were heavily inspired by epik high especially their song "fly" which is what made yoongi want to be a songwriter/producer/rapper. they have always mentioned epik high, ex ("hip-hop phile lyrics) and epik high have always supported them back even when they weren't big. they're close friends now! yoongi has worked on a few songs with them, and they text a lot not only asking for advice on a project but also just to congratulate each other on achievements or to just chat n comment on the latest drama (namjoon and tablo texting abt sky castle finale) it's pretty cute.

suga is called the "hand of midas" in korea. but his idol was epik high , he still takes tablo's advices. i think that people are always paving the way.. without listening to tablo, suga would have never taken the risk of coming to seoul to be a producer. suga and tablo go a long way back actually. they call each other before releasing music to ask about opinions and recommend collaborations.
