This is so good. Really explains the seemingly out of the blue ‘or maybe we get married’ and gives it some much needed context. My heart breaks over them. They’re so in love. And so good for each other and bad for each other simultaneously.
A friend and I are watching this series a 3rd time ahead of the last 3 episodes. I think often enough this dynamic flips, she's the child and he's the parent. Outside of professional situations they often both act like children, together. That shot with the pie is set up just like the ending of Sixteen Candles, which is about teenagers. They're often giggling or running (but not from something) like kids. Their first bar scam has them running out of their , laughing and kissing by the hotel pool like two seniors on prom night behind the school. I love how this production found 2 middle aged adults who have such a young essence on screen and can authentically act like teenagers, it's so much fun to watch.
Wow-never looked at their relationship like that. Kim I thought liked how Jimmy could break the rules and wanted that release. A video from OneTake seemed to agree with that. However, you point out a different more perverse side of Kim (and Jimmy). Everyone kept thinking: “why is Kim still with Jimmy.” Yes they love each other but Kim seems more mature than Jimmy so why is she still with him by season 6? Must be love and getting addicted to jimmy’s antics. Her flashback to her mom? Well that explains. Why she is so career orientated! However, when u pointed out that she is BECOMING a MOM and that was influenced by her own mom, Kim is used to being an adult and so perhaps is addicted to taking care of someone. Jimmy on the other hand needs someone like his mom to enable him.
I wouldn't call her an "enabler" exactly when she's an active participant and seems to get more actual enjoyment and thrill out of it than Jimmy does. If anything, later in the series, he's the one enabling her (he didn't like Howard and screwed with him, but he wasn't enthusiastic about her idea to ruin his life). Early on, he was the bad influence on her, but later in the series, she's been more the bad influence on him if anything It's almost kind of analogous to Walt and Jesse in that regard
Wow you nailed it! Initially, I had Kim labeled as the more masculine energy (feminine in presentation but taking the lead protector and at some times provider role) and Jimmy as the feminine energy (but masculine presenting). Then I thought Kim must be the codependent to Jimmy’s more narcissistic personality as those two types tend to go together. But Jimmy doesn’t strike me as having full on NPD, just exhibiting some narcissistic traits. Still it didn’t seem to fit quite as neatly. But this Mother/Son dynamic is spot on!!
Thanks! I remember another commentator mentioning Jimmy as NPD before, but just like you, I dont see it. As you said, he has narcissistic traits, but he makes far too many decisions based on the need to be liked by others to be a full on narcissist. He's a very complicated character that can't be placed into any single neat category. That's why he's so great to watch!
I've been seeing your videos since this afternoon and can't believe your channel is so damn underrated. It's sad because your content is pretty amazing! You have made me see things differently with characters on BCS, and I love so much this show. Your analysis are amazing, keep going! Love your videos. ♥️
You know what's crazy, I always saw Kim and Jimmy as having a lot of parallels between Walt and Jesse, with Kim being Walt and Jimmy being Jesse. The parent/son dynamic is another parallel I hadn't considered.
To elaborate my point Kim: has the respect of her professional peers, left a job with a prestigious orginaztion which she had promising potential because she felt disrespected, is a more skilled liar/con artist than Jimmy even though she has many legitimate opportunities, does lies and cons because she enjoys it and to feed her own ego, literally says "I like it, I'm good at it" Jimmy: has a more respected brother, resented by family (specifically Chuck), resorts to cons as a means to an end rather than quenching his ego, is seen as a liability to Kim even though Kim is the one who initiates more elaborate and risky scams in later seasons We don't know how Kim turns out, but the key difference between Jimmy and Jesse is that Jesse puts in the effort to come to terms with his actions while Jimmy never does.
@@TheJudoJoker Jimmy is not just a Jesse to Kim’s Walt. He is also a Skyler. Remember the earlier seasons of Breaking Bad? Whenever Walt felt extremely powerful or felt that he was losing control over his life, he would exert his power via sex with Skyler. Kim did the same thing to Jimmy and in the final 2 episodes of BCS season 5 felt very similar to this scene Jimmy: “Kim, please. Let’s both of us stop trying to justify this whole thing and admit you are in danger.” Slippin’ Kimmy: “I’m not in danger, Jimmy. I AM THE DANGER! A girl opens her door and get shot and you think that of me? No. I AM THE ONE WHO KNOCKS!!!” And after something like this, Walt and Kim did the same thing - taking a shower. Also, have you ever notice that whenever somebody called her out, she would yell back at them immediately. Sometimes is calm and composed but many times are also just rant. This reminds me of how Walt killed Mike because his ego couldn’t stand Mike’s criticism.
@@TheJudoJoker I feel like it's the opposite, for Jimmy, conning is a lifestyle, but for Kim, it's something she does rarely and it makes her feel excited.
Gee, it's almost like we're missing a flashback where Jimmy comes home from the Trojan War and enters his marital bed to find Kim, his mom in this flashback, where his wife should be and they start up a torrid affair...
Enabling Jimmy, huh? More like Kim wants to actively participate in his chicanery. Any time the y have a quarrel, another ruse brings them back together. She enjoys the fun of it, while Jimmy is growing moe anxious that his wife is enjoying the dirt he has to crawl through to get a fighting chance in life. It is most clear with the Howard plan. Jim is the one enabling Kim now. He wants nothing of it and would be happy to call the whole thing off. Kim wants Jim to keep on. She wants Howard to lose everything out of spite. If we stay in this parenthood analogy, Kim is not an enabling mother, she is tired of that and wants to be the fun teenager she seems in Jimmy
I think that it started off with Jimmy being the perpetrator and her enabling, but it has definitely turned into Kim taking advantage of Jimmy and calling all the shots. She has turned into a somewhat evil character, if you ask me.
The first thing that irritated me about their relationship was that they almost never get physically with each other. No kisses, no hugs, no sex - hardly any intimate moments at all. I felt rather reminded of a sibling relationship - as they have repeatedly played in their scams.
Compelling arguments, I never saw it this way. Your videos on BCS have great insight! Do you think that she could be plotting against Jimmy with this marriage? If she is, could this be a subconcious consequence of their dysfunction?
maiphexxx I would say that Kim has some abandonment/ father issues, which is part of the reason she remains in the relationship. Many of her decisions seem to be centered on staying together while also being emotionally closed off. It seems the marriage is a last ditch effort when things look hopeless. There is little to no emotionality or sentimentality behind the marriage gesture, it just serves as another way to protect against abandonment.
What the hell? A mother doesnt f her son,the relationship here isnt mother/son its wife/husband,neither is Kim old enough to be Jimmy's mother, what a sick joke.

I remember when Chuck was arguing at Jimmy in front of Kim and she argued that Jimmy was the way he was cause of Chuck just like a angry mom would.
Wow I always thought that Kim’s behaviour in the later seasons made no sense but everything in this video fits perfectly. Thanks.
