  • In this video I'm in RIPA TEATINA, an Italian town in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo. The municipality is located on a hill close to the Adriatic coast, along the road that leads from Francavilla al Mare to Chieti. In this video I documented the procession of Santo Stefano, from the mother church of San Pietro Apostolo and to the church of Santo Stefano and the opposite of 8 May 2023. The procession was accompanied by the festive plenum sound of the two churches. Of notable interest and particular of its kind was the traditional "Menata della Bandiera" which took place in front of the church of Santo Stefano; an ancient traditional rite with which the protection of the Saint is invoked in the territory of Ripa Teatina (CH).
The MOTHER CHURCH OF S. PIETRO APOSTOLO is located in the historic center of Ripa Teatina, on the north-western side. The rather irregular screen facade in brick masonry has an archivolt portal on the right and an aedicule frame on giant pilasters on the left. On the portal there is a mullioned window with a stone column, while a single lancet window opens between the pilasters and at a lower level. The facade is also completed by a clock and a frame with hanging arches. Inside, the church has 3 naves with a loggia for the choir loft and a polygonal apse; the sharp difference in height on the north-western side of the apse area highlights the presence of a Latin cross crypt placed transversely to the axis of the upper church, directly illuminated and covered with cross vaults. The late Baroque decoration presents an order of Corinthian pilasters with stucco decorations and altars with phytomorphic motifs and figures in relief and in the round, paintings in the squares of the vaults. The nave is covered with cross vaults with stucco squares and a 5/8 pavilion vault on the apse surmounted on the outside by a system of staggered pitches with a mantle of tiles.
The bell tower stands on the left side of the facade and ends with a soaring pinnacle with a rooster and a wrought iron cross. The belfry houses a concert of 4 electrified bells extended in the fast falling clapper system.
IV - F4 growing - cast by Fonderia Mari of Torre de' Passeri - depictions of Crucifix
III - Db4 waning - cast by Fonderia Mari di Torre de' Passeri in 1959 - dedicated to Santo Stefano Protomartire
II - A3 slightly growing - cast by Fonderia Mari di Torre de' Passeri - "A. S. Rocco - A peste fame et bello libera nos"
I - Gb3 - cast by the Pontifical Marinelli Foundry of Agnone in 1980
The cemetery CHURCH of SANTO STEFANO is located south-east of the town of Ripa Teatina. It was built in 1010, under the empire of Henry II of Saxony by the blacksmith and mason Tristano.
The plastered masonry façade has a small portico with an entrance arch, a triangular tympanum and a cross vault. On the back side, the scarp tower with a bell gable pierced by two single lancet windows has a "sawtooth" frame and hanging arches with blue-green majolica bowls. The church has a covered hall layout with a flat attic and a gabled external roof with a tiled mantle. The interior retains two niches with remains of frescoes.
The ancient bell tower, restored between 2017 and 2018, houses two electrified bells in the fast falling clapper system. Initially there was only the largest string playable bell in the momentum system; in 2015 the second bell was added and the system was electrified.
II - Gb4 - cast approximately in 2015 by the Allanconi Foundry of Ripalta Cremasca (CR) on behalf of ACO of Fara Filiorum Petri (CH) which electrified the plant.
I - E4 growing - cast in 1513 by "Maestri CVliani me fecit in pesero"
