I’ve watched this exact episode so many times and it never fails to make me cry . Hiriluk’s line where he says “A man dies when people forget him” is just so true , I can’t hold back my tears when I hear that line
What One Piece wants to convey is that you should never judge a book by its cover, never look at people by their physical appearance , but look at their heart and life background.

I remember finding out about One Piece a long time ago after school. One Piece is the greatest anime of all time and nothing can replace it to me simply because it got me through a lot of bullying and discrimination in highschool, watching this scene with you guys gave me the same feeling I had close to 13 years ago, thanks

great reaction guys i cried too when i first saw chopper's story
one of the most emotional backstory on my list. the saddest thing is, if other crew members in their backstories someone important to them usually dies or gone due to various factors and external parties, in chopper case he technically "killing" hiruluk himself by shorten his lifetime when chopper fed him with amiudake, i always cried when kureha told him the fact and when chopper realize what happen.
hiruluk knows that and choose to blew himself to ease chopper's burden
Yep still crying to see this again lmao, and one note that I think of why he's drinking the "explode drink" because he doesn't want to make chopper mushrooms be the death of him so rather than dying because of that or the bullet he's killing himself which is his choice or in his hands
