After a worldwide plague wipes out plant life and decimates humanity, an apocalyptic New York City is the playground for bands of ravenous gangs. Under the leadership of Baron (Max von Sydow), one enclave of survivors develops a plague-resistant seed, but Baron realizes their commune will soon be overrun by the more savage neighbors. Deciding salvation lies outside the city, they hire the deadly warrior named Carson (Yul Brynner) to lead them out through the city’s subway tunnels. But it’s a route that soon becomes a tour of hell.

I loved Yul Brunner and I loved this film. Same people who made Enter the Dragon
I just saw this movie for the first time on TCM, and I loved it!
This could do with a modern remake. I can remember watching this as a kid.
If Yul was still alive, I'd see him pick none other than Vin Diesel as his replacement for a remake. Yul would even advise and coach Vin... and I could totally see Yul Brynner portraying "Riddick", if they had the idea a few decades earlier...
I think this movie only works with a 70's flavor. Max Von Sydow, Yul Brynner, William Smith... A very 70's Score by Lalo Schifrin. It's not a perfect movie, but I don't think they could replicate the magic.
@@OhStylo Vin Deisel would be a boring casting, it’d just be another mediocre Deisel vehicle. Someone not musclebound makes the character more interesting.
This is truly a great movie
This is the fist use in movies of that move where the hero disarms one of the attackers in a gang on one fight and then uses him as a human shield @2:10 - Something you see commonly now in movies like John Wick
When I was a kid I picked up the novelization of this somewhere (Goodwill! Yard sale?) and thought it was a great story.
It was only years later that I was able to find the film. Yul looks great. He was 55 at the time.

I saw it on vhs in 1989 on my first cayak camp without parents. I was 8yo then, and I don't remember the plot, but I still remember his fckg bald head and now, I'm gonna rewath it with some vodka as company. Praise the old ultimate badass movies!
