  • It is actually very easy to Teach Faster Sit Out of Motion with Positive and Negative Reinforcement. Take a look at the video. We show the exact steps to follow. All you need is a dog and an Assistant with a leash.
This is an excellent topic for Schutzhund training for beginners.
First of all, Negative Reinforcement is never pain or discomfort. When someone leads you by your hand - it is Negative Reinforcement. You are following the person to stop pressure on the hand. Does it hurt? No.
The same with dogs. They learn that to make the feeling of the leash go away - they follow its direction. In addition, they get Positive Reinforcement right away. Why would a dog not do the exercise?
Negative Reinforcement (leash) allows us to help the dog understand that he is 100% in control of his environment. The faster he sits or downs, the faster the leash goes away, and reward is coming.
Not only can it help the performance of the faster down, it can also reduce latency (delay) with which the dog responds to the cue.
Many would say - but I cannot take the leash into the field. Of course not. Nor can you bring a ball, a clicker, or any other tool. It is a separate subject, but we have a specific method that reduces dependency on tools and makes the transition from the Schutzhund training field to the trial field seamless.
Many of us train by ourselves. In exercises like Down out of Motion, it is essential that the Handler does not create any secondary cues - the movement of the shoulders or the head, etc. The dog will think that it is a part of the command. If the Handler focuses on clean performance in front of the judge and controls his extra body movements - the dog might be missing half of the command.
As a result, we use an Assistant that helps with the leash. We definitely can fade the Assistant very quickly, just like the leash.
Negative Reinforcement, when used consistently and followed by Positive Reinforcement, will definitely improve your performance. We show many exercises using this solution in our online IGP training (Schutzhund |IPO)

See Hannah brannigan on this topic in Awesome Obedience. The point is not positive /negative, the point is: keep your criteria high when you reinforce! Not convinced: see Alexandra Horowitz book.

Those are very good resources. Criterion should always be well-defined, high but achievable for the dog.
