    I just ordered this exact model, having had my previous Garmin for 6 years now, and its battery finally starting to fade. Every time I go back to update tech after a few years, whether it’s a car, a computer, or a Garmin, I’m blown away by the updated technology. I got my first Garmin in early 2012, and its waterproofing was so poor back then that it only lasted about a year and a half before it was totally shot, and couldn’t be fixed. I live in the states in Florida, and sweat a lot running 7 days a week, so it was a losing battle. My previous models were in the 600 series, which was discontinued, so this time I went with the 900 series. Garmins today are just absolutely packed with features. Many of which I never get to using. But I try to keep a balance with them. I don’t like to completely shut off my brain when running. I like knowing my local area, rough distances, and research new areas a little before going. With some features as well, I always get confused as to which can be used with just the watch, and which you need your mobile phone on you for its signal. I never carry my phone on me when I run, so it can be misleading sometimes to see features, only to discover that I need to carry my phone as well. But even if certain features aren’t available, I’m still amazed how many that there are.

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the super in-depth comment, I enjoyed reading that and getting some perspective into another Garmin fan’s use case. How are you enjoying the watch so far? Hopefully the 965 waterproofing is superior to what you’re used to.. as a heavy sweater I shower with these every day and take them into salty water and high chlorinated water.. the one thing I don’t risk is saunas and Ice baths but I know Joe Rogan vouches for these watches being able to handle it.
      Most runs I’m simile to you really, I like to enjoy the run for what it is and just have the watch as a back up to help with pacing, intensity, navigation if needs be. It’s good to have the trusty companion there ⌚️
      The great thing about the 965 is that 99% of its features now work without the phone.. it’s incredible! Even the map planing and routing is all calculated on the watch. The only features that need the phone are things that require cellular network such as the emergency assistance feature, smart phone notifications, and if you’re on android the ability to send texts 👍🏽
      All the best mate 🌟

      It definitely is impressive! It’s much more comfortable and stylish on the wrist too! Also worth noting that it has a massive screen.. to get the same sized screen in the Epix pro you need to spend more to get the 51mm version and therefore the 1.4” screen. Hope that helps 🌟

      The Fenix 5 plus was sooo ahead of its time! There are so many sportswatch companies that stilllll haven’t met this standard of watch 🤯 which is crazy! • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @anthonyrampino7734 the 965 screen is pretty elite. I would say Garmin make more use of the amoled colours and brightness. Maps on Garmin are full of features.. you feel like you don’t need your phone or cellular connection. However I’ve had Garmin’s gps acquisition fail me multiple times. Suunto has less features and is more reliant on phone to create courses however it never failed me with gps acquisition and was always accurate. One catch with Suunto is that you must remember ti download the maps in all the county regions that you’ll need them for.. abit cumbersome.. but once it’s done, it’s done 👍🏽

It would be a waste to just let it collect dust so I will put it up for sale, but if I can't get a good price for it, I might keep it. For more advanced maps you unfortunately have to pay. I think it’s called Maps+ that grants you access to “pro” TOPO maps I believe. Hello, I'm going to buy my 1st Garmin watch and deciding between 955 and 965 since they have maps and light weight for daily use and running. Does it bother you to swing your arm every time to activate the watch face? Could you see the screen in dim mode (day/night)?

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm it’s such a tough one.. the 965 looks like a nicer watch for all day wear.. I really like it’s futuristic design! The 955 does feel slight dated.. has more of that “sports watch” look.. but I did like how you can have the backlight at 20% or 70% for example. With 965 you are limited to low, medium and high. I did like the extra large 1.4” screen on the 965.. where you get the screen real-estate of the rumoured Epix Gen 2X pro but packed into the body of a Fenix 7 pro 🙈 Hope this helps

  • @reallyoldshaman
    @reallyoldshaman ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thanks for the video. This the the Garmin feature I am most interested in. I wonder if you could make a comparison between Forerunner 965 vs Fenix 7X at least based on your personal experience. Couldn't find a video like that anywhere

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Im definitely happy to make this video! I won’t be able to upload until Monday though 🌟Overall, the 7X feels like a proper tool, and it’s got the bulk to come with it. The flashlight is a feature you slowly fall in love with, it’s fantastic and it’s hard to live without it once you’ve grown accustomed. 🔦 Having no battery life anxiety is a massive bonus too. The software on the 7X is superior in every way. And any any serious adventurous situations I’d rather have a 7X on my wrist.
      Alternatively, for day to day wear, the 965 with its stunning screen and good screen to body ratio is a luxury to use. I think it looks super stylish for a sports watch and has a nice “non-bulky” feel to it on the wrist. Down sides for me personally are the battery life (I’m getting between 8-15 days with AOD turned off). The software is a massive downgrade compared to the fenix range. And I do miss that flashlight.
      With a comparison like this it 100% depends on what your individual use case is. Both watches are good but what do you intend to use the watch for? 😝 Until the video comes out, I hope this helps 🌟

      @@ActiveIdeas Thanks a lot. It is actually a very useful and unintuitive information. I was sure that the software would be identical. What about the screen on Fenix 7X in the sunlight? Is it well visible?

    • @DJ-ru4im
      @DJ-ru4im ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ActiveIdeas what do you mean by "the software is a massive downgrade" on the 965? The Forerunner 9xx line is essentially a Fenix, with a plastic body. It has all the same features and, if anything, the 965 will have some features/metrics that the Fenix 7 doesn't have, since it was just released. Since the 965 has updated user interface and new software metrics, it would seem the 965 is actually a software upgrade over the 7X. So, I don't really understand your statement.

    Another great review mate. Given that you’ve tried all the different brands and so many models, it would be great if you put together a video covering which watches currently have the best navigation experience (accuracy, turn by turn features, map details, orientation accuracy, panning lag, etc etc). As someone who lives abroad and can’t test all these brands, I need to make up my mind which watch to invest in, with my primary need being navigation, but I can’t seem to figure out which watch will provide me the best experience for navigation since usually these reviews are covering one model in isolation and maybe comparing it against one other model, but what I would really like to know is simply which watch provides the very best navigation experience from everything out there.

      You absolute legend! Thankyou for the kind words! 🙈 Corr it’s funny you say that.. I was going to make this exact video in the next couple of weeks or so and also include the new Polar Vantage V3 and Suunto race 😍
      Asking “what is the best watch for navigation?” is a lot like asking “what’s better out of Android and Apple IOS?”.. It very much depends on the person. For city navigation with street names and shop locations I would say Garmin. For accurate ultra marathon navigation with stunning battery life I would say Coros. For hiking or adventure days in the mountains I would say Suunto because of its reliability and pin-point accuracy. As far as Polar goes, we’ll have to wait and see! Hope this helps and happy to answer any more questions mate 🌟

    Nice video, if on vacation, can you make loke wave points in a city by zooming in and select locations, or do you select one by one? Not a deal breaker, just if planning at the start of a day, also does ot also take minutes of the distance is only a couple of km in a city? Does it recalculate if you pass route you dont like? Really considering a 965 as a Christmas present for my self 🙂. Keep up with the videos 🙂

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, some really cool questions there with some real world use cases! So unfortunately I don’t think you can’t create multiple waypoints on the watch but tbh, it’s so quick at making singular routes that you would just navigate to a location, then click on the map for directions to the next location. For more in depth route planning (with waypoints and checkpoints) you’d need to use the phone application.. would be quicker this way anyways 👍🏽 im not sure if it recalculated passed routes.. I never thought of testing that but it’s a greeeat question.. all I can say is, IF it doesn’t automatically recalculate, you CAN definitely manually get it to recalculate from your current location. Let me know if you end up going for it, the 965 is the perfect Christmas gift to yourself ☺️ Cheers man, will do🍿🎥

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great question.. there is a time out on this I believe which will snap the map back to current location or
      You can just press the “back” button exit pan/zoom mode and it will instantly snap back to current location. What I do like is that the maps will maintain the zoom level after you snap back if you wanted to view current location further in or further zoomed out 👊🏽

    So, Garmins turn by turn navigation are those beeping audio cues you get? then you check your wrist and know which way to go? This question may sound unbelieveable dumb but I actually thought it would be some kind of voice telling you "turn right in 50meters". :D
    now i gotta think again if ill go with the 265 and the rungo app on my phone... or the 965 with those odd beeping cues.

What would be your recommendation? Greetings Nepal, I’d love to visit one day! I have emailed amazfit asking to test their ultra watches but no response yet. From the reviews I’ve seen Amazfit looks pretty basic compared to Garmin and by going Garmin you’ll get insane improvers on gps accuracy, hr accuracy, altimeter accuracy and spo2 oxygen accuracy.
      Also, whilst the 965 is amazing.. with someone in the mountains as much as you it might be worth looking at the Fenix 7 pro or Epix Gen 2 51mm

      DONT buy the standard Fenix 7.. I haven’t heard many reviewers (if any) mention it but I found the gps only to be terrible when hiking/running in the mountains. Worse on my 7 than the 6X!? So I would say get a Fenix 6 Pro or 965 because of the multi band. All the best 🌟

      Hey Cristina! I haven’t used the 955 since Christmas (had to sell it) but I can confirm that garmin had started to improve many of the bugs and flaws I pointed out in my earlier video. A good thing about the 965 is that Garmin definitely want to get this one right so hopefully the user experience will be more stable on this watch 🙈However I’ve definitely noticed bugs on the 965 too so it’s not all sunshine and rainbows over year.. just much better than the initial roll out of 955. If you’re hiking and climbing the 965 will be magnificent 😍 It has a bigger more vibrant screen and enough battery life for those activities so I would say.. go for it 🌟

      Hey mate, yeah I’ve tried this and it works flawlessly. Try holding down the up button during the activity and the selecting Pan/Zoom (obviously make sure your touch screen is turning on during activities too) then you should be able to zoom in and out during your activity.. this is definitely possible. All the best Mark! Hope that helped 🌟

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think I liked the Map auto zoom so usually have it turned off I believe.. with touch screen enabled you should be able to touch the map (without having to select pan/zoom) and be able to make on-the-fly adjustments.. give that a go, if it doesn’t work there’s an incorrect setting on your watch. Also once you swipe out of the zoom interface it will maintains whatever zoom level you chose until you change it again. .. also even with touch screen off if you hold the up button and then press the start button it will take you straight to zoom anyway if you on on the map page which is cool. I do love Garmin but it takes some messing around with to get used to hey 🤣🤣 All the best bud 🌟

      Hey Khairi, welcome to the channel! 🔥 I’d 100% recommend the Forerunner 965.. especially if you’ve come from the AWU! The comparison between the two watches isn’t even up for discussion.. if you’re going to focus on trail running, road running and the occasional hiking session the 965 should suit all your needs.. I would only consider the Fenix 7 if you wanted the extra battery life, but then you take a massive hit on the screen and then might as well buy last year’s 955 🤣

      Hey Vez! Yeah, one of my favourite watches was the Fenix 6X pro titanium solar! And when I upgraded from this to the 955 to test I just found myself running into countless hurdles. Even with basic things like adding a world clock, setting alarms, using the compass, the maps… the fenix series always felt intuitive and the interface made sense. The 955 felt abit like I was using a vivoactive again.. some of these issues have been improved on the 965 (and 955) but if you’re looking to use your watch in some serious navigational situations I think your only option is Fenix. On the other hand the upgrades with the AMOLED interface on the 965 is great for every day use and a joy/pleasure to look at. It can do 97% -ish of what a fenix can do and for most people this is most definitely enough 😝 Hope this helps 🌟

Enjoying this watch so much. The battery life is so amazing! My Samsung watch, I never even used all the smartwatch features so this is actually the perfect thing for me! One question: When training using one of the sport mode activities, e.g. Hike, I want to view a trail on the map without following it
    - Just been able to see my current position in the map together with the trail from a gpx-file downloaded to the watch, without being guided by the watch to follow the trail
    - And still be able to shift between the different data screens defined for that sport mode where the map with the trail is just one of the data screens
