Such a beautiful underrated song by Kate. I love how the pre-chorus uses the harmonies to create a wall of sound right before the big chorus comes in and she belts her heart out.
I hope you do a reaction to Deeper Understanding. That's one of my favorites on this album.

Another lovely song by Kate, it's almost a companion piece with The Fog, this being about a mother figure and The Fog about her father.
Incidentally, I think I've identified the star that explodes. Kate said " I had this lovely conversation with someone around the time I was about to start writing it. They were talking about this star that exploded. I thought it was such fantastic imagery. The song was taking the whole idea of how we cling onto things that change - we're always trying to not let things change. I thought it was such a lovely image of people reaching up for a star, and this star explodes. " In all likelihood the star is SN 1987A, a supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud which occurred in 1987, just when this album was being written and recorded. Well, it actually occurred 168,000 years ago but it took until 1987 for the light to reach us. It was the closest and brightest supernova since the invention of the telescope and was in the news a lot at the time.

So glad you reviewed this song, which I feel is much undervalued. Kate's voice is very rich here and the concept of the lyrics, while simple, is timeless.

Family is deeply on my mind at the moment and this song melded with my thoughts and added to my emotions. Very beautiful song.
This album, an album I ignored basically, is really so good. Things happen when they’re supposed to and I guess this album’s time for me, is now. What a blessing.
I am so blessed to be a great grandfather twice and with the pandemic happening, I worry a lot.
Got news my daughter’s half sister tested positive for Covid and had visited my daughter and family recently. They’re in quarantine now and I’m praying for their health. So far, they’re ok.
On a lighter note, I watched some Sumo and I might be hooked.
Take care everyone and vote masked, much love,
    Peace and family Music

One of her brilliant songs that doesn't get much attention. Just a great song and Kate really belts out the chorus with that incredible, beautiful voice

I was born the same month as Kate, but she's a year younger than me.
Having handled infants in my family, I really like how she describes the instinctive way a baby reaches out for things. And how we never grew out of this urge.

The line 'reaching out for the hand that smacked, reaching out for that hand to hold' gets me every time. I don't see the song as being specifically about parents but about, as she also writes, 'the pull and push of it all: the bittersweet needs and wants of life including family that nurture or attract but may come at a price or even harm us such as fire.

I wish Justin you could have seen me while you were playing this song. Chills filled my body as my hands were raised as if I was in Church(a Baptist Church) and I was saying, "Yes!!!! Yes!!!! Yes!!!!" This song, along with "Moments of Pleasure," from her "Red Shoes," album are my absolute favorites from Kate Bush.....man...those notes she hits....wow!!!

I do love it when she belts it out like that. Such a powerful voice.
Would be interesting if you'd react to the original version and the (superior) 1986 version of "Wuthering Heights", where she really gets to show off her richer range.

So glad you are going through this album. When I need a Kate Bush fix, this is the album I go to first. This was still back in the days where an album had songs that were thematically linked. I just love it and can’t wait for you to get to This Woman’s Work.

  • @OronOfMontreal

    sigh...
Kate created the best Progressive Rock of the 80s and early 90s. Pete opened the window for her to fly out on her own flights (as she herself acknowledged on the back cover of "Never Forever"), but Kate's greatness was more consistent for a decade. What a voice. And I just now realized how Old Testament are the lyrics of "Reaching Out".

When I bought my first CD player in 1989, this album was the very first CD I put in and I have always loved it. When I saw the title of this song in the description, it didn't immediately ring a bell (it has been a long time since I last played the album), but as soon as it started, it all came back to me and I liked it even more than before. You're going to hear some more fantastic tracks on this album, enjoy!

He so is...but I do hope he goes back to where it all began with the Kick Inside first, so he can see how all the intricate little side roads led to Aerial, and I think 50 words for snow will see Justin metaphorically close the piano lid, roll his fingers over it, just like Johnny Cash did in Hurt, and just think 'perfection'...should be about the time she releases her next work of brilliance...must be close to 10 years since 50...she's due.

The Sensual World is probably my fav Kate Bush album followed by The Kick Inside. Hounds Of Love /The Red Shoes/Never Forever are tied for third and Lionheart and The Dreaming are tied for fourth. Aerial and 50 Words For Snow I feel are subpar to her earlier albums.

I hope to see you listen to Mike Oldfield’s Ommadawn soon. Just as a heads up, this piece once again has a remastered 2010 version, however it is in not to different from the original, like it is in Hergest Ridge. I would still recommend listening to the original mix. Admittedly though Spotify, specifically Mike Oldfield’s discography on Spotify, is a mess to navigate.
Edit: Just look for “Ommadawn Pt.1 - 1975 Stereo Mix” and “Ommadawn Pt.1 / On Horseback - 1975 Stereo Mix” (the second part if the album seems to be misnamed on Spotify. It’s supposed to be called Pt.2)
The 1975 versions can, for whatever reason, only be found on the Deluxe Edition released in 2010. I thought Spotify was supposed to be easier to use than Vinyl. Guess they were wrong...
