Hedge, you are one of the first people in recent history to actually break this song down, recreate it to perfection. Regardless of what people say, you have made contact with the original producers who know better than anyone else. I appreciate all your work and grateful that you have put the time and effort into recreating and getting the official information on its production. Thank you sir.
Dr Mix is turning more and more shill. In his reconstructions, he seems to knowingly ignore the source of some instruments, so that he can insert an alternative sound from whatever plugin he's shilling and then pretend it's exact.
Love this video! To me, it represents so much more than Haddaway’s song. Why does music today feel so bland? Because there’s no real care. How many producers today take the time to layer five different sounds just to craft one bassline? It’s this dedication to creating something unique that leaves us mesmerized, even 30 years later.
No fancy “influencer” is going to beat the master! Your love and dedication to the original is why you nailed it. You have no idea how much I appreciate learning about how this song was made!
After reading some comments I think some things get mixed (😁) up in this discussion: I think/believe you are closest to knowing how it really was made (and I find it impressive how you did it). So this is about the truth about the original. But I think that's a different discussion than how to recreate it. Dr. Mix of course tried to recreate it within the frame of the product he was promoting. And get as close a one can. By that it is also a demonstration in/example of listening and analyzing skills, in order to recreate it on the spot, make it sound like.... Others at home will do so too, within the limits of what they have in plugins on the one hand and time and skills on the other. So in a way it is apples and oranges, 'what is it really' vs 'how can I do it (as close as I can with what I have')?'. Another issue is the amount you want to share your knowledge. Like I wrote elsewhere, I can imagine you won't give for grabs what took you a lot of effort to get. On the other hand (no complaint) I find it frustrating when you showed all the sounds used, but not knowing the names (and I guess this will keep the 'discussion' going). And isn't the hunt more rewarding than the catch? Or at least should be? ((edited for typos)
Excellent! I find this analogous to my love for acid sounds and there's not just one piece of hardware or sound that is the thing. Emulating to the ceiling is not the goal. It's working with what you have and can do and enjoy the process :)

This is top notch 👍!!! No question about that. The "final" mix of a 1:1 copy without vocals is really hard. One tends to replace the missing vocals with a little more mids of the instruments for compensation. If you would pull out a couple of dB in the mid range, in particular for the main synth, this would be almost identical. Absolutely incredible 👍.

And I don't know of any other blind sound designers anywhere on TH-cam, so I'm even more enthusiastic about your work than I already am (I'm also a child of the 80s and 90s). 🙂 The picture quality is very good, everything is sharp and true to color and also bright, I don't think there's anything negative about it. The fact that you "only" (in quotation marks) have just under 10,000 views in this case is because the masses prefer to watch someone sit in a bathtub filled with jelly and generate millions of views. But I personally wouldn't be interested in something like that. 😀
This sounds great sir, I don’t know if you used the original synths or remade the sounds but it sounds accurate. The percussion is also perfect, the hi hats and shaker are put together well.
That too but that depends on the engineer. Some simply don’t remember. In case with Gary he said that they tried to re-use "What Is Love" bass for “Life” and could not recreate it for whatever reason.
Can someone help me pick up my jaw and. Close my mouth... This is insane... I also listened to the one made in FL studio and I agree... Dr mix's... Really sucks 😂😂... Kudos for you hedge... Greetings from Honduras
Awesome work! Zero G samples were super popular in the 90s from what I've read...do you know what the 5 layers of the bass sound are and what synths they're from (I'm assuming it's not all just the Yamaha DX-11)?
This is a very good recreation man, how did you manage to combine all the samples from the HAMMOND B3 folder from Zero-G to play them on the keyboard? The left hand sound is B3 TONE C2 and B3 TONE C3 and you played them at the same time. I don't have a midi keyboard but even if I had I can't figure out how to combine them.
Ignore the chords. Just use the single note samples. In fact my AKAI just loads my old configuration. And I mapped it the same way for Logic’s sampler. Basically each zone (except for first and last which kind of fill keyboard before/after) is 11 semitones wide. C1 to B1, c2 to B2, etc. But tonally it’s quite interesting. You get more sudden changes. Playing it is not as hard as it looks. Some getting used to but the bass notes pretty much echo the bass notes of the chord. And there’s some interesting passing notes as well. I could post a more detailed breakdown on FB in the future.
All these five samples are count for exactly five octaves, from C to B each. I combined them in NI Kontakt. B3 TONE C2 and B3 TONE C3 are not played simultaneously, these are the sounds of the second and third octaves respectively. It's a pity that you can't post links here, I would have sent you .nki
@@Hedge777 Thank you man, can I write to your mail to see the exact placement of the each sample ? I'm not very familiar with the note sheets or something but I searched for the organ for 3 years and want to try and do a cover too.
Great cover of this great song from Haddaway. I also made a cover of this song a while ago and it’s on my TH-cam channel. But it doesn’t come close to yours! Subscribed.
Hey man, it seems some jerks got on your nerves lately, which I get the same feeling from time to time on my own channel, you are the best sound designer on TH-cam, so ignore them. I had no idea about what was the Haddaway Rock Organ until I saw one of your '' what is love '' videos a while ago. The thing is `; sound design or re-creating does not only mean tweaking sounds using various synths, but to make a deep re-search about the original sources-equipment -sound libraries used in those songs etc. Thanks for your work, cheers!
When you recreate a song, I believe every version is as good as the others..some are closer to the original, some are not..maybe when it is too similar it loses its character?! I love the idea of finding the exact patch, it’s fun, but you should still notice the difference between the original and the recreated, so you can appreciate the effort put into both works, just my thoughts. I did a couple of recreations on my channel, and then after publishing them I wish I did things differently, but I start to like them now😀 Kariya - Let Me love you for tonight - Yamaha DX11 tribute th-cam.com/video/v-5d1s3BE38/w-d-xo.html Hedge you are a great musician and an inspiration!!!
Rebuilds and remakes are different things. Making your own sounds and versions vs actual reverse-engineering and mix reconstruction. Not every remake is laughable, and not every rebuild is perfect. But the processes have different goals. Conflating the two for the sake of convenience is entering the realm of intellectual dishonesty and irresponsible behaviour I have addressed in my last Community post. :p ~Hedge
PLEASE make the same video on "Thriller". The bass track was done on a Jupiter-8, but everyone keeps using monophonic synthesizers (like the ARP and Moog) and it sounds NOTHING like the original.
FYI all requests should go to the dedicated thread in Community posts. Thanks. :D Was it Jupiter 8? Interesting. I probably do not have the means at the moment. The only analog poly I have is a Prophet 5 in a dire need of repairs. Only Jupiter 8 around here, in Toronto is quite a ways from me and Im’ presuming you were looking for something more authentic than just software. Which I use when I work in the box but still try to stick to hardware when creating more authentic rebuilds. ~Hedge
@@Hedge777 I see. Yeah, the synthesizer programmer on the track claims an ARP 2600 but there's just so so so much overwhelming evidence suggesting he's wrong -- and he's been called out by other musicians for lying about information before (example being Steve Lukather calling him out for uploading fake union contracts). I appreciate your time!!
Just had a listen. It’s a monophonic (with legato) sound using 3-oscillators. Imagining Jupiter 8 with 1 voice would be thinner (2 oscillators per voice) and using unison would just be x8 times that. Not a fit in this case. Hope this helps. And having gone through Anthony Marinelli videos, none of it stood out as being contrived. Maybe give these a go again? :D ~Hedge
@@Hedge777 The Jupiter-8 emulations and Jupiter-X have been giving out some super promising results -- in unison. It sounds practically identical, but I'm banking to see on if Behringer's JT-16 remake could yield the same results.
Yeah, my main concern would be no unison detune on JP8. Oscillator detune could ease things a bit. As long as these emulations can do it. But a 3 oscillator sound coming out of 2600 can sound pretty damn big. The rest is mixing. Anyway, will play with it. Email me BTW. Long threads on here get ridiculous to keep up with. :p ~Hedge
Very nice !! LOved that, see someone mention Dr Mix below, bit up his own a..E if you ask me,he certainly cant take constructive criticism thats for sure !! Thank you ! x
Indeed, organ sound melody is played with two hands. It can be clearly heard in the intro of Club Mix of What is Love, however it's almost impossible to hear it in the mix when other instruments are being played. th-cam.com/video/8pO_X41FeCA/w-d-xo.html
The club mix was widely available to anyone willing to do proper research. The excuse that it’s 'almost impossible to hear in the radio mix' only highlights a lack of diligence. As someone with no vision, I did my research before rebuilding the track accurately. What's the excuse for those who can see but still fail to investigate?
@@Hedge777 Cheers! Now I have some interested questions: Do all these sounds come from earlier sample CDs? I found it very interesting to learn that this iconic Hammond B3 sound from "What Is Love" comes from a sample CD from Zero G. No less interesting was how you showed how to play the chord correctly! And the thing with the bass... I wouldn't have thought so. Five sounds layered on top of each other? Wow! Do you think that all these sounds or at least some of them (lead sound, for example) can also be convincingly recreated with plugins? I'm looking forward to more episodes from you where you uncover sound secrets and have subscribed to your channel. Thank you for your great, interesting work!
Link to the bass breakdown in the video. I will post a full breakdown video in weeks to come. - **AKAI S1000** (in my case 3200): - *Zero G Datafile Vol 1*: Drums, percussion, female vocal samples. - *Zero G Funky Elements*: Hammond B3. - *Best Service Alpha Dance*: 2 bass layers (plus 2 more during the middle eight), 1 sequence element, string layer, and additional drums. - **Roland JD-990**: Hybrid Strings (modified), one more sequence element. - **Waldorf Microwave**: Main lead sound, bass layer, and another sequence element. - **Korg M1**: Bass layer. - **Minimoog** (SE Minimoog at Coconut Record Studios): Bass layer. So, the bass alone was: - 2 AKAI S1000 samplers - Waldorf Microwave - SE-1 Minimoog - Korg M1 I went over all of it with Gary. Hope this helps. ~Hedge P.S. G2 Stabs are done with the aforementioned hammond B3 organ sound layered with the Waldorf Microwave. I've used other synths (like the D-550 instead of the Waldorf) in my other mixes.
@@Hedge777 One more question please: Someone from a home recording forum bought the sampling CD "Funky Elements" by Zero G (it's currently very cheap for $5) and said that your organ has even more "meat" and "plasticity" - he doesn't know how to express it. It just doesn't sound like yours. Is that because of the comment you added later about the G2 stabs, which - if I understand correctly - are a preset from Waldorf Microwave and have to be layered with the Hammond organ?
This seems a lot more grown up and serious than Dr Mix who just seems to grin at the camera acting more like a celebrity DJ appealing to kids who love to brag they have no music knowledge to make a song coz the computer does it all. Hedge , with your sound design experience. , can you tell us what snaredrum has been used in this song? it does not sound like a 909 snare to me. For sure it has some great added room reverbs on it here and there. but which drummachine do you suspect that was used for the snare drum here ? Or anyone here in the comments knows it ?
With regards to drums for “What Is Love” I pretty much used samples from Zero G Data File vol 1 and Best Service Alpha Dance vol 1. I recall either Gary or someone else who worked at Coconut mentioning a drum machine. Possibly an R8? But it must be said that the track was sequenced in Cubase in its entirety. If an R8 was used it was probably doing a couple of sounds that were triggered via MIDI. I’m working on other tracks now (lots of requests) but wouldn’t mind loading one of my mixes to check what specific drum sounds I layered. Email me.~Hedge
@@Hedge777 Thanks for a fast reply ! I was also thinking about if it could be the R8. I checked "Rock my heart" but there they used clearly the 909 for the SD . Interesting how they clearly changed snares on other songs.

And I don't know of any other blind sound designers anywhere on TH-cam, so I'm even more enthusiastic about your work than I already am (I'm also a child of the 80s and 90s). 🙂
The picture quality is very good, everything is sharp and true to color and also bright, I don't think there's anything negative about it.
The fact that you "only" (in quotation marks) have just under 10,000 views in this case is because the masses prefer to watch someone sit in a bathtub filled with jelly and generate millions of views. But I personally wouldn't be interested in something like that. 😀
This is pure gold
Would love to hear a version of TAKE ON ME....
Love your channel! Keep it coming!
Thanks, more stuff coming soon!
This sounds great sir, I don’t know if you used the original synths or remade the sounds but it sounds accurate. The percussion is also perfect, the hi hats and shaker are put together well.
Thank you very much! All done with synths and samplers.
@ awesome
Accurate as usual
that's awesome , ! Tricked my ears !
Glad to hear that!
Studio engineers have always kept secrets thats what Ive learnt over the years
That too but that depends on the engineer. Some simply don’t remember. In case with Gary he said that they tried to re-use "What Is Love" bass for “Life” and could not recreate it for whatever reason.
What is Love? This is Love... Awesome work!
Thank you very much!
Thx, the link to the full breakdown of the bass is in the pinned comment.
@@Hedge777 Ah ok., thank you!
Synthmania’s Paolo played the organ part with two hands too - I have absolutely no idea why Dr Mix decided he only needs one hand 🤷🏻♂️
I love Paolo's channel!
My old Akai S3000xl you could assign any sample on any key.
Sure, email is in "About"
Simply Amazing! 👏🏼
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Amazing
Now do the vocal!
But really, amazing work
Good work 👍
Thanks ✌️
Great cover of this great song from Haddaway. I also made a cover of this song a while ago and it’s on my TH-cam channel. But it doesn’t come close to yours! Subscribed.
Great bass line
Amazing job
Thanks very much!
Long time no see! Good to have you back. :D
@Hedge777 🤙😎🎹🎧🙏
Hegde is the best!! 😁🤘🍻
Yes mate, You smashed this mate, Ive seen your work, Don't worry
Have you heard Vincent's mix? I put it in Community posts. compelling. :D
@@Hedge777 noo mate, link me!!!
@ that's spot on!
Perfecto!!!!!
Nailed it.
I did a couple of recreations on my channel, and then after publishing them I wish I did things differently, but I start to like them now😀

Hedge you are a great musician and an inspiration!!!

Thanks master! ❤
lol in the unedited version I said ""Patience, Grasshopper. First, wax on, wax off... then layer the bass!""
PLEASE make the same video on "Thriller". The bass track was done on a Jupiter-8, but everyone keeps using monophonic synthesizers (like the ARP and Moog) and it sounds NOTHING like the original.
FYI all requests should go to the dedicated thread in Community posts. Thanks. :D
Was it Jupiter 8? Interesting. I probably do not have the means at the moment. The only analog poly I have is a Prophet 5 in a dire need of repairs. Only Jupiter 8 around here, in Toronto is quite a ways from me and Im’ presuming you were looking for something more authentic than just software. Which I use when I work in the box but still try to stick to hardware when creating more authentic rebuilds.

~Hedge

Very nice !! LOved that, see someone mention Dr Mix below, bit up his own a..E if you ask me,he certainly cant take constructive criticism thats for sure !! Thank you ! x
Instant LIKE!
Much appreciated!
Wow that's just right
Thank you :D
Amazing video. That's why I love TH-cam.
And the PWM synth changed in a simple sawtooth lead with flanger. Doctor Mix, can't you hear the PWM ?
Excellent!
Thank you! Cheers!
- **AKAI S1000** (in my case 3200):
- *Zero G Datafile Vol 1*: Drums, percussion, female vocal samples.
- *Zero G Funky Elements*: Hammond B3.
- *Best Service Alpha Dance*: 2 bass layers (plus 2 more during the middle eight), 1 sequence element, string layer, and additional drums.
- **Roland JD-990**: Hybrid Strings (modified), one more sequence element.
- **Waldorf Microwave**: Main lead sound, bass layer, and another sequence element.
- **Korg M1**: Bass layer.
- **Minimoog** (SE Minimoog at Coconut Record Studios): Bass layer.
So, the bass alone was:
- 2 AKAI S1000 samplers
- Waldorf Microwave
- SE-1 Minimoog
- Korg M1
I went over all of it with Gary. Hope this helps.
~Hedge
P.S.
G2 Stabs are done with the aforementioned hammond B3 organ sound layered with the Waldorf Microwave. I've used other synths (like the D-550 instead of the Waldorf) in my other mixes.
@@Hedge777 Brillant - thanks so much! I'm really looking forward to your next video.
Thnx ;)
This seems a lot more grown up and serious than Dr Mix who just seems to grin at the camera acting more like a celebrity DJ appealing to kids who love to brag they have no music knowledge to make a song coz the computer does it all.
And all,his excessive jewellery 🤷🏾♂️ how does he still manage to play without scratching or catching on everything?
👊👊💥
Simply perfect!!! Can you get this piano mix sound??? th-cam.com/video/gprY4VrClSY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vkdl0zqo4IZA1oOA we know is an mks-20 but never i get the same sound.... Coud you get it???
it's best to email me with things like this. Email In "about" :-)
The other guy’s mix is a Temu version compared to yours. I bet he isn’t even a real doctor.
Thank you. But IMHO the only other guy worth talking about is Vincent. I find his version compelling. See Community posts. :D

Pretty good. I've seen countless covers of this song and they all suck.
And the PWM synth changed in a simple sawtooth lead with flanger. Doctor Mix, can't you hear the PWM ?
