I have been finger picking for over 40 years. I get more out of this type of lesson than others out there. I come from the days when you spent an HR trying to tune to a record spinning around. Every record player had a different speed! The young have no idea or excuses for not leaning if they want too. Thanks for your time making these videos. Brad Lee

I constantly run into players all over the world who have learned from his tutorials starting in the 1970s. He's an American national treasure. May he live forever. Mr grossman Is a living master of acoustic guitar in its most intricate and delicate style. He was a 1 on 1 student of reverend Gary Davis, i guess those who critique are the people who give up after 1 minute and then blame others. You simply will not find a more knowledgable font of experience than mr grossman.
There have been 159 people who have watched this who have no soul. Thank you sir for a superb lesson I could listen to this all day long.

For thirty plus years Stefan has been key in passing this music on to next generations. His book Texas Blues got me started, thank you Stefan.
Mr. Grossman's timing is always impeccable. You can see how effortless he approaches a piece here, whether he is playing a simple blues lick or a complicated rag. The definition, the attack, and the timing in general, are always to be admired when you here him on here playing something. Thanks for posting this. I am always more intrested in the WAY he plays rather than the notes he plays. That is what seperates him from most people..
Although I know nearly all techniques of this video I never heard and seen somebody combines them so effectively and creative and play it so fluently and with a great sound like Stefan Grossman. Simply great!
If you don't learn off this guy then give up! The clearest lesson I've seen yet and it makes something which sounds so good look so easy.

I first checked this video out was a couple years ago, when I had first picked my guitar up after 20+ years. I've been coming back every once in a while to see if I've improved enough to follow along with this, and for the first time I've been able to get through it with a lot of backing it up and getting each part right before moving on. Very cool!

The first country blues I learned was from a Stefan Grossman book called Texas Blues found in a guitar shop in Oakland. A lifetime of Lightning' Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb and more ensued. Thank you Stefan Grossman!

I'm left-handed and self-taught but on a conventially strung guitar. I watch someone playing and then turn it upside down so to speak and play. It's like playing a piano from behind and It probably looks grotesque to an accomplished guitar player. Consequently, no self-respecting teacher would go near me. I find your videos to be the best I've seen and they're so easy to learn from. Your explanations are easy to follow and don't waste a moment. I truly can't thank you enough for this exceptionally fine lesson.

The How To Play the Blues series (1-3) is a classic example of talented play meeting with the gift of teaching. It should be in every guitarist's library.
From the first 3 notes he played, i knew i wanted to hear everything he had to say and play. What a cool guy. Now to replay this video over and over till i get it. Thank you, God bless
heard a double album way back in the 70's "How late'll ya play to". This kind of stuff was all over it. Spent many a night studying for finals and listening to it. David Bromberg and his band. Loved it

How cool is this, Stefan Grossman giving us lessons Fantastic eh. Playing rhythm and lead at the same time is always very tricky and takes hours and hours of practice, but it's worth every minute. The easy way to learn I believe, is to break it down to very small pieces and remember Never Give Up, go to a mirror and tell yourself everyday, I'M GOING TO DO THIS, then practice at least 2 hours a day or even 6 hours WHATEVER it takes. Thank you Stefan for sharing your talent, it's deeply appreciated by all of us who LOVE playing guitar.

I am a long time player a former shredder, I ditched rock and metal guitar when I realised the real art to blues playing. Even though it can be harmonically 'simple', the idea that you can play rhythm and lead simultaneously, play over the chord changes and actually produce grooving, complete musical statements is what makes this so appealing and great to both play and listen to. There is a lot more going on than most realise, there is a whole world of musically theory that opens up playing over the changes that musically challenged people such as much self may be able to grasp due to the 'simplicity' of the blues. It's as complicated or simple as you chose to make it. The most important aspect of this style is feel and bass/melody accompaniment. I am willing to bet most guitar players that learn electric lead playing or play metal and rock would not be able to rock this style, as most neglect the importance of rhythm and targeting chord tones over chord changes. This guy right here is an absolute master, having met and studied with the best, documenting their repertoire and carrying on the tradition here. He is probably the best resource for this stuff that you can find, he has literally been there and done it. This lesson right here combines so many different elements and styles, you can here a lot of lightnin' hopkins in this slow blues but also contains some sweeter sounds as he targets the major 3rd over some of the changes. I am still a novice in this style so I can't pinpoint exactly what other influences are in this song, but I can assure you that it contains a very pure and complete, distilled combination of phrases and influences. Probably the only lesson you would ever really need to play a slow blues in E

I don't understand the people who dislike this lesson. As you can see, he is a master who has played with some of the best players ever. The only reason wouldn't like it is because you are frustrated because you can't play. Going back and practice your E, A and B7 chords and come back in a year or two

Marvellous lesson Stefan.....brings me back to my young days spent learning from the Kicking Mule books & albums. Stefan, you taught me a huge amount of fingerpicking, rag and fiddle tunes in the 70's....I loved it.

I'm not sure how I was directed towards Kicking Mule records in 1975 but it changed me immensely as a blues friend into an obsessive yelled at by my parents..."what are you doing down there!!!" as I slowed down your LPS and drove them mad. This has been such a s soul refresher, what a video! I have been feeling so stae and depressed ican barely find time with my sons autism and just Tooo Anxious to pLay...That soulfy slow defeated feelimng inside, that slow drag blues sound is refreshing and inspirational to my causevand passion to play...I'm picking the guitar up! This teaching in al key learning is beilliant! it sounds great and the presentation is fulfilling in all aspects for me, Thanks for sharing!

Stefan Grossman learned from blues masters like Reverend Gary Davis and Lightnin' Hopkins. Saw him live in concert in Iowa City back in the early 1970's. His compilation on Transatlantic Records is worth picking up. His blues instruction series dissects the subtle finger moves and
enables us blues challenged pickers to improve with each
attempt.

not just a great player, but teacher. not all great guitar masters can teach it like a craft, he can.
@bluesyblues87 Of course this is a shortcut to the blues. Blues guitar will never be anything more than a hobby for the vast majority of Guitar players, and the G-man is a great teacher for facilitating that hobby. The tab is just a rough guide; we know we don't have to play every note as he sets it down, that's why he encourages us add our own ideas in the video. Lighten up.

All the ones that they advertise are great players but not all can teach. Grossman plays well AND he teaches well. His Blues volumes 1 - 3 are terrific.
Wow. This is probably one of the better blues guitar lessons that I have ever seen on TH-cam and I've been playing guitar for several years watching countless videos. He gives so many ideas on this video that it can be watched over and over and over again

Very nice and easy! You can play them on any beater of a guitar and they sound decent. My neighbor came over whining while I was cleaning fish cause his o'l lady wouldn't let him go with me. After about 30 minutes of listening to his miserable self I grabed my old wallhanger axe, this thing is a hammered piece of junk, I started plucking a few of these licks and it washed his blues away. He left and a few minutes later I heard his o'l lady hollering and here he came with his axe, it was on!

Stefan Grossman is possibly the best guitarist (blues, ragtime or otherwise) of his generation. Any of his albums or books are recommended. Most come with the other :) Cheers.
